The No. 1 issue
Is Shields ready for everyday load after false starts?
By John Powers, Globe Staff, 10/9/2002
teve Shields has already gone native, just as he has everywhere he's ever been. At Michigan, he was a true blue-and-maize Wolverine. In California, he got a place on the beach and paddled out on a surfboard. In Boston, Shields lives across from the Public Garden, scoots over to Chinatown for a snack, wanders around Harvard Square.
What the Bruins' newest goaltender has already discovered, what with the Big Dig, the crazy-quilt streets, and the quirky T, is that you ''cahn't get theyah from heah'' in this town.
''I can point out a place on a map,'' Shields said. ''I just can't get there.''
Time will take care of the geography, and Shields already is settling in as though he expects to be working on Causeway Street for the next decade or so. Not that longevity is in his two-year contract, which calls for substantially less money than he made last year but provides more incentives.

Buffalo grabbed Shields in the fifth round (101st overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Shields won the 1996 Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans, giving up 16 goals in 18 playoff games. The goaltender earned his first NHL win Dec. 23, 1995, downing the San Jose Sharks. Three seasons later, on June 18, 1998, he joined the Sharks, moving to San Jose with a Draft pick for Kay Whitmore and a pair of selections. The Sharks gave Shields his first starting job during the 1999-00 season and he responded by recording the team's second-best save-percentage in history (.911). HE was dealt to Anaheim during the 2001 season as part of the package for Teemu Selanne. Shields was traded to the Boston Bruins for a Draft choice after the 2001-02 campaign. Before coming to the NHL, Shields played college hockey at the University of Michigan. He left the school as a Hobey Baker finalist. He also ranked second in career NCAA victories with 111.

PREVIOUS HOCKEY MAGAZINE ARTICLES The Sky is the Limit Monster or a Program Hockey's Newest Hotbed Better Cause ... The Making of the Mask
The Making of the Mask by Rick Welch The Goaltender: The armored knight who stands in battle during the toughest competition, the last line of defense and the mysterious man behind "The Mask". With the advent of the slapshot and curved sticks; and players getting bigger, faster and stronger, the need for protection was apparent. Out of necessity the goalie mask was invented. Though very archaic in design and composition, it was the introduction of how the goaltender came across and his personality expressed. The mask was part of his persona, what makes one individual stand out from the rest. Thus, the making of the mask — that is the Gerry Cheevers mask — reincarnated. Cheevers (to Bruins Fans aka "Cheesy"), the undisputable heavyweight champion of goaltenders, was the goalie who had the most distinctive goalie mask on the planet. The stitches on his plain white mask become his trademark. It was the epitome of the position, knowing that when he took a puck to the face another stitch mark would appear. The Hall of Famer, through his style of play and artistic approach, has brought the concept of graphic design on the goaltender mask through the ages.

Why Doesn't My Dad Like Hockey?

Lots of puzzled faces. Many heads getting scratched. People muttering, "My copy of the new CBA must be around here somewhere, where'd I put it?"
RUST BELT, USA
I keep asking myself this question. How come? Dad seems like the perfect raw material for a hockey fan. Blue collar background. Well, not really.
He grew up on a farm during the Depression, in a hardscrabble Midwest landscape where coal mining was the largest employer. His parents' farm was so far removed from the nearest town that they had to refer to themselves as "Horse Crikkers" for anyone to recognize their farming township.
Dad didn't drive a tractor, much less a zamboni, when he worked in the family fields as a boy. He walked barefoot behind horses and mules to plow the corn rows. Dad grew up to be a used car salesman, the a successful sales manager for a Chevy dealership, and at the end of his career he owned his own used car lot.
Just Remember One Word...

Chris Simon and the Funky Bunch How is new New York Ranger Chris Simon like Mark "Marky Mark" Wahlberg?
You can read the answer in this week's New York Sports Express NHL report . You New York City people can also pick it up on the street. And that's nice, too.
Find out the truth about Simon and the link between his scoring touch and his hair.
I'd link to this even if I hadn't written it.
Honest. Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, August 08, 2003, 08:06 AM When More Concussions Are Good Wow. The rate of reported concussions has tripled in the NHL
Everyone seems to agree that it's not because the game is getting more dangerous, but because players are getting better about reporting head injuries.
I bet detection is better now, too.
By the way, there were 62 concussions reported in the NHL last season. That doesn't count players who "sucked it up" or GMs who denied a player received a concussion.
You can read the actual article here
It's not easy reading, though. Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, August 08, 2003, 08:05 AM Johansson Retires Oh man. I hope I'm not stepping on
