18:00 GER 2-0 FRA Imoo comes up big as Japan ties Belarus The Japanese men's hockey team, backed by the spectacular goaltending of Dusty Imoo, skated to a 2-2 tie Tuesday against Belarus in the final game of the qualifying round of the men's hockey tournament of the Nagano Olympic Winter Games. Following a heartbreaking defeat to France on Monday, Japan scored two power-play goals and played their best game of the three-game qualifying tournament against the heavily favored Belarus squad. Japan, 1-9 with the extra man prior to Tuesday's game, will play one more game for 13th and 14th place Thursday to determine their overall ranking in the tournament. Imoo, who played well in the loss to France after sitting out the opening game against Germany, had the hot hand again, turning away the relentless Belarus attack throughout the game. Belarus outshot Japan in the game by a margin of 44-10. Down 2-1 in the second period, Ryan Kuwabara shoveled the puck past Belarus goalie Aleksandr Shumidub to tie the game at 14 minutes and 23 seconds into the period.

18:00 FRA 5-2 JPN Japan suffers heartbreaking loss to France The Japanese men's hockey team, looking for their first Olympic victory since 1976 in Innsbruck, suffered a heartbreaking 5-2 loss to France on Monday in their second game of the qualifying tournament at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games. Playing in front of a vocal crowd that included Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako, the Japanese team battled France even 2-2 over the first 55 minutes. But, France's Christian Pouget scored a power-play goal at 17:05 of the third period when he took a centering pass in front of the net and lifted a high bankhander over Japanese goaltender Dusty Imoo to put France up 3-2. With Karl Dewolf in the penalty box for holding, Japan pulled Imoo at 18:28 of the third, but Philipe Bozon, formerly of the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues, stole the puck at center ice and scored into an empty net with 52 seconds remaining. Playing with a man advantage, some questioned the wisdom of pulling Imoo, but Japan's coach Bjorn Kinding defended his decision.

VASILY MELNICHENKO/ITAR-TASS POWER PLAY: Jagr, at center, left New York to play for the Siberian team Avangard Omsk
Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005
Mlada Fronta Dnes.
That might be a stretch, but it's undeniable that some of the game's European greats are back on home turf again. Jaromir Jagr, the Czech star forward for the New York Rangers and one of the NHL's best-paid players with a salary of $11 million, is No one gets pleasure from the day-to-day grind in Russia. If the NHL salary is the same as here, they'll all go back
breaking attendance records everywhere he goes. Playing for his hometown team, HC Rabat Kladno, he scored 11 goals and made 17 assists in 17 games. (In November, he moved to Siberia's Avangard Omsk, sponsored by billionaire Roman Abramovich.) The transitions have not all been smooth. The European emphasis on elegant skating and fancy puck control, for example, has challenged some NHL players accustomed to North America's narrower rinks and more aggressive play. But many are relishing the experience. "The biggest thing is the ice surface; it gives you that much more time with the puck," says Rick Nash, the 20-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets' left-winger, currently with Switzerland's HC Davos. "And you'll go back hopefully a better skater."

Ex-Cincinnati players push Anaheim deep into Stanley Cup Finals BY BILL PETERSON Wildfire expansion grew the National Hockey League (NHL) by nearly one team per year for three decades until the late 1990s. As the NHL's long arm reached all the way out to Columbus and added the Blue Jackets to the calendar, the league missed Cincinnati, which has forever remained a minor league hockey town. That's not the worst that could happen to a city. In 1997, Cincinnati became something of a minor league hockey capital shortly after haggling commenced between its beloved International Hockey League (IHL) club, the Cyclones, and their landlord, Cincinnati Gardens owner Jerry Robinson. The Cyclones quickly began a building war by purchasing the old Riverfront Coliseum, renovating it into a place worth visiting and moving into their new riverfront home. Robinson retaliated by bringing in an American Hockey League (AHL) franchise, to be called the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and affiliated with the NHL's Anaheim entry by the same nickname. Cincinnati hockey fans impressively supported two top-level minor league teams for a couple years before the arrangement succumbed to numerous factors. No one ever really thought two teams could survive for long in the first place. But then came an economic downturn, the Blue Jackets came along as a cost-effective television alternative and construction on the riverfront made the Cyclones experience a little less palatable.

The Great One agreed to assume coaching duties with the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday. He will also remain a part-owner of the team. "I'm really excited to be back in the locker room and back on the ice," Gretzky, who has never been a pro coach before, told reporters at a televised news conference. "That's what I love the most and I'm thrilled to be back on the hot seat." The introduction of Gretzky as the new coach in Phoenix capped a week in which many big NHL names found themselves starting new chapters in their careers. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly of the first week of free agency: First, let's assume that both the Mighty Ducks and Kings have been winners.
