Patrick Roy
Patrick Roy was born on October 5, 1965 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He played his minor hockey with the Granby Bisons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 3rd round, 51st overall in 1984 NHL Entry Draft Roy got his first taste of the big leagues in 1984-85, playing one period with the Canadiens. He would go on to become their regular goaltender in the next season and made the All-Rookie team in 1986. But it was the 1986 playoffs where Roy showed what hockey fans would be treated to for years to come. He won 15 games, posting a stunning 1.92 goals against average in the post-season as the Montreal Canadiens surprised many pundits by winning the Stanley Cup Championship. Roy would win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. Over the next decade Roy would solidy his position as one the elite NHL goalies, winning numerous Jennings and Vezina trophies and being an All-Star game regular. Patrick Roy won his second Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1992 as the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. But as the Canadiens organization went through coaching and front office changes, Roy became disenchanted and was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. The Avalanche franchise had just moved south from Quebec and was on the cusp of fielding a great team. Patrick Roy added the missing ingredient as he and the Avalance won the Stanley Cup championship. His postseason success continued in the 2001 season as he led to Avalanche to their second Stanley Cup and added his third Conn Smythe Trophy. Patrick Roy brought Glenn Hall's butterfly style of goaltending into the modern NHL era. The butterfly style that has since been copied by numerous goalies that followed him and has revolutionized the position. Roy retired after the 2002 season and should be a shoe in for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Patrick Roy poses with a likeness of himself following his retirement news conference. AP DENVER (AP) Patrick Roy 's piercing blue eyes gave no hint of the emotional moment. While those around him choked back tears and had trouble speaking, Roy barely blinked. One of the greatest goalies in NHL history had been preparing for this moment for nearly a year. "I feel great about my decision," Roy said Wednesday after announcing his retirement. "I really feel like I emptied the tank and I'm ready to move on. I step aside with no regrets." Roy is just two years removed from his best regular season and is still considered one of the league's premier goalies at 37, but he figured it would be better to go out on top rather than tarnish his image. "It's always been important for me to play with consistency, but also leave on my own terms," said Roy, who made the decision to retire before this season. "I think I've accomplished everything I wanted and I think I've done basically what I think I should." It's hard to imagine doing much more.

Mark Messier
Mark " The Moose " Messier was born on January 18, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He began his professional hockey career in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and in 1979 was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2nd round, 48th overall. By his third year in the NHL, Messier was a bonafide star scoring over 100 points and combining with other Oiler greats to create a winning dynasty. He was the playoff MVP when the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1985, one of six cup victories for Messier in his distinguished career. Three more Stanley Cups would grace Messier and Oilers as he anchored the second line, behind all-time great, Wayne Gretzky. When Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings, Messier emerged as a leader for the Oilers scoring a career high in points and leading them to a Stanley Cup victory in 1990. As the Oilers continued to dump salaries, Messier was traded to the New York Rangers for Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice, and Louie Debrusk. The Rangers were looking to inject some badly needed leadership and scoring, nursing a 40 year Stanley Cup drought. Ranger fans would only have to wait a couple of years as Messier led the team to the elusive Stanley Cup Championship in 1994. Messier moved on to the Vancouver Canucks in 1997, a move that did not yield the desired results. Injuries limited Messier's playing time in Vancouver and in 2000 he returned to the New York Rangers. Though he was once the consumate combination of power, skill, and speed; Messier continues to play a productive role with the Rangers.

Career Statistics Other Resources The winner of the NHL's Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender in 1989, 1990, and 1992, Roy played in just one game with the Montreal Canadiens in 1984-85 and became one of the team's goalies the following season, sharing duties with Brian Hayward. Roy won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 1986 Stanley Cup playoffs, when he had a 15-5 record with a 1.92 goals-against average. He led the NHL with a 2.47 average in 1988-89 and a 2.36 average in 1991-92. After losing their first 1993 playoff game in overtime, the Canadiens won 10 consecutive overtime games, with Roy recording more than 90 shutout minutes under the pressure of "sudden death." He was the easy winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as Montreal won its twenty-fourth Stanley Cup. Asked about the Montreal mystique, Quebec coach Pierre Page replied, "How do you spell mystique? It's spelled R-O-Y." But on Dec. 2, 1995, the Canadiens had a terrible game, and Roy was part of it. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings, 12-1, in the Montreal Forum, the worst home loss in history. Roy gave up 9 goals before Coach Mario Tremblay finally took him out during the second period. Humiliated, Roy announced that he would no longer play for Montreal. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, and he won his third Stanley Cup with them the following spring.
