UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Hockey still reigns as Canada's top sport Nothing's changed. It's the same as it's been for the last hundred or so years. Kids growing up in the land to the north of us still pick ice hockey overwhelming over any other organized team sport. And why not? What used to be simply a favorite form of physical education or a youngster's automatic choice for activity with friends has certainly blossomed into a potential career move. Witness so many young Ukrainian Canadians entering the ranks of Canadian junior hockey: some 49 known young Ukrainians were found playing pucks in the three major junior leagues in 1997-1998. Good chance there are many others. And why not? With upcoming expansion plans, the National Hockey League will total 30 teams within the next two seasons. The bottom line: this means jobs. Well-paying jobs. This hockey pundit's research attempts revealed some 28 pucksters of Ukrainian origin learning their trade in the aggressive Western Hockey League, another 18 training in the Ontario Hockey League and just three lonely Ukes signed up in the Quebec League. Below is a brief listing and mention of each and every one of them with their most recent scoring stats in parentheses. A tidbit of official information comes first. The Canadian Hockey League is an alliance of the three major junior leagues: Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League. After the regular season, the three leagues compete in a round-robin tournament to decide the Memorial Cup championship.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach The NHL in 1998-99: a season of change The NHL used to be called the Original Six. Now the ever-changing NHL has the Original Six Divisions. Like football and baseball, the NHL now has half-a-dozen divisions with the addition of the Southeast and Northwest. Below we present our annual NHL preview column, giving readers the inside skinny on the plusses and minuses of every team headed into still another season. Part I includes the teams of the Eastern Conference, by division, with teams listed in order of predicted finish. Our 1998-1999 preview theme: "The good, the bad and the Ukes." ATLANTIC DIVISION Philadelphia Flyers Good news: The Flyers can go through this season without worrying about Eric Lindros' contract. Philly was the Eastern Conference's top scoring squad in 1997-1998. Flyers traded for a goaltender. John Vanbiesbrouck always had good rapport with coach Roger Neilson. Bad news: Team chemistry always seems amiss in Philadelphia. Vanbiesbrouck is coming off a poor season. Flyers don't seem to get much scoring from their defense. Uke(s): Speedy minor leaguer Mike Maneluk made the team and starts the season on the top line with Lindros and LeClair.

The Hard-Core Hockey Round
Toss-Ups by Craig D. Barker 1) According to Total Hockey, this feat has only been accomplished once in NHL history, by Mario Lemieux, on December 31, Against the New Jersey Devils, Super Mario scored an even-strength goal, a power-play goal, a short-handed goal, was successful on a penalty shot, and scored an empty netter. FTP, what is the official term for this feat that sounds suspiciously like the Seattle Mariners manager?
Answer: quinella 2) A native of Renfrew, Saskatchewan, he was added to the 1944 Memorial Cup winning Oshawa Generals after they defeated his St. Michael's College side in the Ontario junior finals. One of the most fierce left wingers ever to play the game, in the 1950's, he was often overshadowed by right side Production Line mate. The last Red Wing captain to hoist the Cup before Steve Yzerman, he was traded to Chicago in 1956 after he attempted to form a players' union. FTP, name this Hall of Famer, nicknamed "Terrible," whose #7 hangs in the rafters of Joe Louis Arena.

Upset with some of the calls that Referee Don Koharski had made favoring the Bruins, Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld chased Koharski down the runway to complain. FTP, what six word phrase did Schoenfeld make legendary, causing a one game referee strike, and earning Schoenfeld a suspension.

Atlanta Thrashers The Thrashers are a very new team. They have been skating around NHL rinks since the 1999-2000 season. Goaltender Damian Rhodes became the first player to ever officially be an Atlanta Thrasher on June 18, 1999. The team played its first game on October 2, 1999 at home against the New Jersey Devils. Atlanta lost 4-1. This year, the Thrashers are led by point leaders Ilya Kovalchuk, Marc Savard, and Vyacheslav Kozlov as well as goaltender Pasi Nurminen. The Thrashers are playing good hockey this year and should be in the mix for the crown of the Southeast division. With more consistent play, the Thrashers could make a few perennial powerhouses sad come playoff time.

Slap shots
Compiled by DAMIAN CRISTODERO THE NEXT WALLY PIPP: That could be Thrashers goaltender Damian Rhodes, who was forced out of a Nov. 4 game against the Bruins with a groin strain. Milan Hnilicka, a 27-year-old first-year player from the Czech Republic, led Atlanta to an 8-3 victory and then went 2-1-1 in his next four games, allowing six goals on 109 shots. That's a .945 save percentage. Hnilicka got a standing ovation Wednesday night during the final minute of his 1-0 shutout of the Predators. "I guess I don't have to rush back," Rhodes said. HEAD GAMES: Wild right wing Jeff Nielsen was battling a Flames player along the boards Nov. 8 when Calgary's Steve Smith crashed the party and hit Nielsen with an elbow. Nielsen went down, got up and went down again.

Sabres, rookie goalie rally
BUFFALO, N.Y. Dave Andreychuk capped a four-goal outburst as the Sabres came back to beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-3 Saturday night. Vaclav Varada scored twice, Stu Barnes had a goal and two assists, and J.P. Dumont had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit. Rookie goalie Mika Noronen, playing his second game in place of injured Dominik Hasek, stopped 19 shots as the Sabres opened the season with two straight home wins for the first time since 1988. Ziggy Palffy and Rob Blake scored first-period power-play goals for the Kings. After the Sabres scored three second-period goals to take a 3-2 lead, Andreychuk scored what proved to be the winner with 5:30 left with a wrap-around power-play goal.

Wayne Gretzky - To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of The Hockey News, the staff set forth to compile a survey determining the Top 50 hockey players of all time. Wayne Gretzky was selected as number one, surpassing such other hockey greats as Gordie Howe, Bobbie Orr, and Mario Lemieux. Gretzky, humble in his acknowledgement of the award, was presented, prior the the Rangers' game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 12th, with a pair of silver plated skates; the same skates he wore when he started his National Hockey League career in 1979. Mario Lemieux - Mario Lemieux was inducted into the hall of fame November 17 as well as had his number 66 retired by the Penguins two days later. This is all a fitting end for the greatest player in hockey. Many will remember his skill and leadership, on and off the ice. Steve Yzerman Jaromir Jagr - Jagr was named to the NHL's First All-Star Team for the second straight season...Ranked second in the league in points with 149 and goals with 62...Trailed only Mario Lemieux and Ron Francis in assists with 87...Set the NHL record for points and assists in a season by a right wing, breaking Mike Bossy's records of 147 points and 83 assists set in 1981-82...Set the record for most points by a European-born player, breaking the mark of 139 set by Peter Stastny set in 1981-82.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Rhodes gave the Senators some fine goaltending after joining them from the Maple Leafs via trade in January. His arrival, coupled with [Sens coach Jacques] Martin's emphasis on defense, resulted in the team allowing about one goal fewer per game over the final half of the season." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 52) "Journeyman gets his shot. Should have better stats than Felix Potvin this season." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 87) "Rhodes has to prove again that he can be a No. 1 goaltender...Clearly, if Rhodes doesn't prove he's ready and totally recovered, then a trade for help remains a possibility."
