Clarkson hockey skates into new season

In the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Clarkson University Hockey is considered among the elite programs in the league. Since the conference's inception in 1962, the Golden Knights have been a dominant force having won nine ECAC regular season titles and four league tournament championships. With 19 lettermen returning from last year's squad, which placed second in the league, and another strong recruiting class coming to campus, Clarkson should once again be challenging for top honors in the ECAC.
The Green and Gold, however, would like to lift their play to the next level in the 2002-03 campaign and take advantage of the new NCAA 16-team format and qualify for the national tournament after a three-year absence. Guided by head coach Mark Morris, who enters his 15 year, the Knights will look to improve upon their 17-15-6 overall record and 11-6-5 ECAC mark from last season.

December was a rough month for the Knights, as their only win came in overtime against Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) opponent Colgate University.
The game was a non conference game played at the new Corel Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, home of the Ottawa Senator. The game was played before a National Hockey League (NHL) match-up between the Senators and the New Jersey Devils.
The win came with freshmen goalie Dustin Traylen between the pipes, recording 14 saves. After two scoreless periods, and both teams scoring in the third period, the game went into overtime.
In a game that saw 21 penalties, it was a penalty in overtime that determined the outcome of the game. Colgate junior Kyle Doyle picked up a holding penalty 3:22 into the extra session.

The Braves played in the C.H.L. for 4 years before St. Louis joined the National Hockey League as the St. Louis Blues. Oddly enough St.Louis was the farm team for the Chicago Black Hawks, today they are very big rivals. Following St. Louis's move to the N.H.L in 1967, the Chicago Black Hawks moved their farm club to Dallas and renamed it the Dallas Black Hawks. Editor's note: This story originally appeared in the June 22, 1999 editions of The Dallas Morning News. The evolution of Mike Modano is starting to wear on him a little. Everywhere he goes, every game he plays, every pass he makes, Modano hears the same thing: Do you like hockey as much now that you're not a big goal scorer anymore? "The worst thing I could do," he said last Thursday, sighing, "was score 50 goals in 1993." He hasn't come close since. And he's twice the player. That characterization is evident in Modano's plus-minus rating, one of the best indicators of a player's worth to his team. In 1993-94, when he scored a career-high 50 goals, his plus-minus was minus-8.
