81. UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (01/23/00)
he and (goalie) felix potvin used to have quite a thing going. Speaking ofwalks, this current hockey season has been a walk in the park.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Work, passion make Dave Super again Boston Bruins' captain Raymond Bourque and Ukrainian veteran Dave Andreychuk have engaged in many battles for space and possession of the puck as opponents over the years. One would think Bourque, in his 21st year in the NHL, would know just about everything there is to know about Andreychuk, his new teammate who is in his 18th season. But that is not so. "I knew he was tough to play against," Bourque said, "and how good he is at positioning himself in front of the net and scoring from in tight. What I didn't know about him was how much enthusiasm he brings to the rink every day. On and off the ice, you can tell just how much he loves the game. And how committed he is to the game. It rubs off on the other players." Andreychuk, who readily admitted he is not known for fast starts, is making the Bruins look like geniuses for taking a chance on him last summer when he became an unrestricted free agent. The Bruins needed to replace Dmitri Khristich (another Ukrainian) and his offensive contribution after deciding to part company with the high-scoring winger. Although Andreychuk scored only 15 goals last season and 14 in the 1997-1998 season, during which he endured numerous injuries, including two broken ankles, coach Pat Burns convinced cost-conscious GM Harry Sinden to sign the 36-year-old left-winger.

  • Boston is a talented team who look to build on their most recent successes on the ice. Joe Thornton and Glen Murray are players on the rise in the NHL and a threat to score every time they get the puck. Goalies Andrew Raycroft and Felix Potvin can keep the Bruins in any game. Founded before the 1924-25 season, the Bruins became just the second American team to win the Stanley Cup in 1928-29 season on their way to establishing a legacy as one of the premier hockey teams in the history of the NHL. The Bruins have had some of the NHL's best players lace up the skates, including Hall of Famers Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, and Ray Bourque. In their long history, the Bruins have hoisted the Stanley Cup five times. They are now looking to bring the Cup back for the first time in over 30 years.

SLAM! Senior Writer Chris Stevenson answered all your All-Star questions this afternoon from Denver, Colorado, the site of the 51 st NHL all-star game on Feb.4 . Evan Jones What punishment do you think Owen Nolan should get for his brutal hit on Grant Marshall? And what do you think the NHL will do? Chris Stevenson: That hit was one of the worst that you're going to see and Stars' GM Bob Gainey wasn't far off when he said it was a "cowardly, unsportsmanlike assault." I 've got to think a hit like that has got to be worth about 15 games, if not more. It was a blind-side hit and it looks like it resulted in a concussion, according to the early reports and all those things will combine for the league to come down heavy on Nolan.

    SALARY (1996-97):
    STYLE: Butterfly.
STRENGTHS: Very strong on first shots - seems to smother rebounds. Excellent on low shots. Good anticipation and confidence. Great reflxes - you don't get the nickname "The Cat" without them.
WEAKNESSES: Goes down too early and stays too deep in the net, leaving him vulnerable to shots in the top corners. Very little lateral mobility. Poor angle goaltender, sometimes depending too much on his reflexes. Name pronounced PAHT-vihn

    WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Former backup Damian Rhodes outplayed him as a Senator last year. Will Islander Eric Fichaud too?" (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 109) "Felix Potvin's steady deterioration in play has been a major reason why the team has steadily fallen over the past three years. With goaltending stats dropping all over the league, his 3.15 average was a disappointment and the third time in four years it has risen rather than fallen. Still, he's only 26, he played 74 games last year and this season he'll finally get the push that many have been saying he needs." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p.171)

Personal Note on the 2004-2005 hockey season - or lack thereof
Although the NHL hockey season didn't go ahead for 2004-2005 due to contract disputes, I am not mad like some of the fans. I am sad that things have come to this. I still consider myself a fan, especially of the Leafs, but I am just sad that this had to happen! I am also sad that this is the final season that the Baby Leafs will play in St. John's. Travel costs are too much for the team to stay in St. John's and they didn't renew their contract. It all comes down to money...sigh! Growing up in Canada meant a healthy dose of ice hockey, especially on those Saturday nights when the NHL was on Hockey Night in Canada . Growing up with four brothers meant I had to choose between one of a couple of teams. Most Saturday nights, even now, you can see either a Toronto Maple Leafs game or a Montreal Canadiens game. It's real easy to be a fan of a team you can see play at least once a week. And yes, I do have brothers that love the Habs (Montreal's nickname)!
