#4 - Bobby Orr
It is arguable just who is the greatest player of all time. But it is almost obvious who is the greatest defenseman of all time...Number Four...Bobby Orr. Bobby Orr revolutionized the game of hockey. His slick passing and playmaking and his end to end rushes were unheard of by a defenseman. Only the very very best forwards would try a solo effort. Orr did it seemingly effortlessly. Before Bobby Orr defensemen were counted on primarily for defensive purposes. They would rarely join a rush, nevermind lead one. They stayed in front of the net and helped clear the puck out of the defensive zone. Their main job offensively was to get the puck out of their end and create a quick transition game. But after the kid from Parry Sound Ontario arrived, he would forever change the way the game is played. His end to end rushes and his mastery on the point of the powerplay changed the way offense was generated, and how defenses would cover them. He was simply the most fluid skilled player the NHL has ever seen, even more so than Gretzky or Lemieux, both of whom benefit from the game revolutionized by Orr. Orr won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 1967. He would finished second in scoring among defenseman with 13 goals and 41 points, astounding numbers in those days. Harry Howell won the Norris Trophy that year, but was quoted after being named the winner - "I might as well enjoy it (Norris Trophy) now, because I expect it's going to belong to Bobby Orr from now on."

July 1, 2004 Bobby Orr joins Patrick Foley and UNH Hockey Alumni for the first "TEAM 25" Memorabilia Auction to benefit New Heights PORTSMOUTH, N.H. The New Heights teen program at the Community Campus in Portsmouth will host hockey legend Bobby Orr (plus other stars) in one of the most valuable auctions of sports memorabilia ever held in the Seacoast on Saturday, August 7 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The event is made possible by the work and generosity of former UNH hockey team captain Patrick Foley. Hockey greats attending will include Brendan Shanahan of the Detroit Red Wings and former UNH players such as Darren Haydar of the Calder Cup champion Milwaukee Admirals, Mark Mowers of the Detroit Red Wings, former UNH All-American goalie Mike Ayers and former UNH Hobey Baker finalist Steve Saviano. Wearing #25 as captain of the UNH hockey team, Foley's efforts to help people off the ice inspired what's come to be known as "Team 25" - groups Foley organizes and leads to help others. Graduating this year and heading to the pros, Foley was named team captain three times (only two others achieved that honor in the history of UNH hockey). His dedication to the community earned him additional honor as a Humanitarian Award finalist. Previous Team 25 efforts include obtaining and delivering 400 teddy bears to Boston Children's Hospital. New Heights is the Seacoast's largest, most comprehensive out-of-school program for young people between the ages of 12 and 18. Each year, New Heights provides fun, healthy activities and adventures for more than 1,000 adolescents. Started in 1987, it is a program of the Seacoast Mental Health Center, guided by a volunteer community advisory board.

Hockey legend Bobby Orr stepped up Sunday and called for a definitive resolution to the NHL labour dispute which began last September when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman shut the season down by locking out the players.
The former Bostom Bruins' defenseman lashed out at both sides of the labour dispute in a column he penned for a local newspaper. Orr had earlier made the decision to not speak out publically concerning the dispute as he had faith in the abilities of both Bettman and Goodenov to arrive at a mutually agreeable conclusion. Orr has since changed his mind.
In his column, Orr calls for Bettman and Goodenov to "step aside" if they cannot reach a compromise. The 8-time Norris Trophy winner went on to say that hockey is in imminent danger of becoming "irrelevant" unless both sides come together for the sake of the game and "immediately put an end to this nonsense".
Both sides of the dispute plan to meet again on May 2. Last Wednesday's meeting wrapped up when Bettman announced that the league would not use replacement players but in a statement said, "If we don't have a new CBA so that our players can start the season with us in October, we will not open on time."

On January 9, 1979 the Boston Bruins held, "Bobby Orr Night". When Bobby was finally introduced, the Garden crowd stood and cheered for eleven minutes and would not let Mr. Orr speak. Finally the noise subsided and the #4 was raised to the rafters while Bobby and his family looked on.
Did you know that when Orr first came to Bruins training camp he was assigned #1. For 13 years Robert Gordon (Bobby) Orr set practically every record in hockey that you can imagine for a defenseman.
He altered the game of hockey forever. One of the many astonishing feats of Bobby's career was his +/- ratio. Bobby ended his career with a +/- ratio of 597. His best season was 1970-71 when he concluded with an NHL record of 124.
Just so you know Wayne Gretzky's best +/- season was 98. In his career Bobby never had a negative +/- season.
