Stockey Centre, right on the gorgeous blue of Georgian Bay. The museum, which had its gala opening on July 18, 2003 with Orr front and centre, has since attracted thousands of fans from all over the world to visit the repository of artifacts from Bobby Orr's professional and personal life. On Friday morning at 8:30, the Stanley Cup was secretly taken to the Parry Sound Golf and Country Club and tucked away out of sight. Orr wanted the magnificent trophy to be a surprise for the many golfers that day. At 10:45, a shotgun start initiated the day. Bobby Orr, with the Stanley Cup, was situated at the 12th hole. It was evident that the knee surgery recently undergone by Orr was still leaving the superstar wincing in pain. It's difficult to watch one of the best to ever play the game (and even more importantly, one of the nicest gentlemen in sports), reel from pain. With Bobby wearing shorts in the heat, one golfer observed that Bobby's many knee surgeries left his legs looking like roadmaps. In fact, if you follow his left knee, it'll lead you to Great North Road, where Bobby spent his childhood. Friday, July 18 was the official opening of the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame within the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the waterfront of this beautiful Ontario town. The germ of an idea had been planted in 1979 when Bobby Orr was forced, through injury, to retire from the National Hockey League. Orr had perennially shown immense pride in his hometown, and the community wanted to honour this extraordinary athlete and citizen in an extraordinary manner. But Halls of Fame and museums don't spring from the soil like so many maple seedlings dotting the wooded areas that line the highways on trips to this vacation community. It would be twenty-four long, often challenging years before the dream would finally be realized. The Georgian Bay neighbours the new Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. The areas around the perimeter of the Charles W. Stockey Centre were a hive of activity leading up to the ribbon-cutting at 1PM - face painting, Native ceremonial dancing, a steel drum band, fiddlers, trampoline demonstrations, synchronized skipping exhibits and food and drink areas. He was a "rookie of the year" in 1967-1968 and had 4 consecutive 100-or-more-point seasons from 1969-1970 to 1972-1973, a rare feat. In the 1970-1971 season, he assisted on 102 goals to set a record. Born 160 mi. north of Toronto, in Parry Sound, where youngsters begin skating at a very young age, he learned how to handle a stick efficiently enough to play organized hockey as a Minor Squirt at the age of 6. He went through the age brackets of Peewees and Bantams and began attracting attention of NHL talent scouts when he was 12. He was signed by the Boston Bruins when he was 14 to play Junior A hockey. Playing against boys 4 and 5 years older, he was an immediate success. Perhaps it was the retirement of Wayne Gretzky in 1999, or perhaps it was a desire to sum up 100 years of a sport that had come into its own and grown exponentially around the world that led to these discussions. Hockey fans in Parry Sound, Ontario, in the late 1950s saw a lot of this hockey genius in its infancy. Doug Orr, Bobby's dad, had been a speedy player and gifted scorer in his own right. He wanted his son, still small for his age but also enormously talented, to play forward in order to take advantage of his speed and puckhandling abilities. Bucko McDonald, a former NHLer who played defense in the 1930s and 1940s and coached Bobby when the youngster was 11 and 12, believed his charge had all the makings of an outstanding defenseman. He taught Bobby the ins and outs of the position and encouraged him to use his offensive skills as well. In his first National Hockey League game, against the Detroit Red Wings and Gordie Howe, 18-year-old Orr impressed the home crowd and the many reporters with his defensive abilities. Photo by Ray Lussier of the Boston Herald Brearley Collection Of the 296 goals Bobby Orr scored in his brilliant career, the one that enters the realm of legend took place in the Stanley Cup final on Mother's Day, Sunday May 10, 1970. A banner high above the ice wished Orr's mother a happy one. She wouldn't be disappointed. The Boston rink was a steaming 90 degree's F as the upstart expansion St. Louis Blues skated out to meet the Bruins in overtime. The players, drained by the deadlock and the humidity, wanted to end this one quickly. With the puck deep in the St. Louis zone, Orr blocked a clearing pass, then slid the puck to teammate Derek Sanderson in a "give-and-go". Sanderson placed the puck perfectly on Orr's stick, and Orr, about to go airborne courtesy of St. Louis defenceman Noel Picard, scored the game winner a mere 40 seconds into overtime to give the Bruins their first Stanley Cup victory in 29 years. For a young hockey player growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, this was a very special moment. This was the first game I could remember watching from start to finish on Television as presented by Hockey Night in Canada. The game has been forever etched in my mind as when I first identified my first hero (next to my mother and father). We all wanted to be Bobby Orr. To Canadiens, these were the days of our youth, we played on outdoor rinks and imitated our hero's. In fact, that was the year I was the leading scorer in the "Tiny Mite League". I scored 29 goals in 12 games and "we won it all". I remember my father in his "goloshes" all bundled up watching me from his vantage point on top of a snow pile by the boards. That was the most exciting time in my life because he was watching my performance as if I was a superstar like Bobby Orr or Phil Esposito. I ended up liking Esposito because EVERYONE wanted to be Orr. I also chose number 7 as my favorite number just like Esposito.

He first caught the eye of a Boston Bruin scout in 1960 as a 12 year old defenseman playing in a bantam tournament. At age 14 the Bruins had already signed him to a junior contract that saw him begin play with the Oshawa Generals. Orr would go on to set a new record for points by a defenseman in the Ontario League. He played in Oshawa until he was 18, when he signed with the Bruins to play in the National Hockey League. Orr's first season saw him score 41 points, win the Calder trophy and be named as a Second Team All-Star. Bobby Orr had an enormous impact on the game of hockey, pioneering the "mobile" or "rushing defenseman". His blazing speed, quickness, and a knack for scoring changed the face of hockey by bringing offense from the defenseman. Orr would win the Norris Trophy as best defenseman for eight straight years, and added two Art Ross trophies for scoring titles. His first Art Ross was in 1970 as he became the only defenseman to lead the league in scoring, and he would repeat the feat in 1975.
