Bobby Orr: A Worthwhile Investment Contrary to popular belief, everything about the National Hockey League and the Boston Bruins did not change the moment Bobby Orr pulled on a uniform in the fall of 1966. It took another year or so for that to happen. As an 18-year-old, Bobby Orr earned top rookie honors in 1966-67. Orr wasn't even a teenager when the Bruins first saw him, a Pee-Wee dominating games against older Bantam players in Parry Sound, Ontario. A small investment to sponsor Orr's team made him the future property of the Bruins, and was probably the best money the franchise ever spent. An 18-year-old defenseman with a crew cut at the start of 1966-67, Orr and rookie coach Harry Sinden weren't able to get Boston into the playoffs for the first time since 1958-59. The Bruins finished last in the NHL's final season as a six-team league, but Orr gave Boston fans hints of all that was to come. His 13-goal, 41-point performance over 61 games (Chicago's Pierre Pilote was the only defenseman with more points that year) was good enough to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, plus land him a spot on the league's second team All-Star team. Not everything, however, was positive. Orr suffered a knee injury near the end of his rookie season, and it set off a chain reaction of operations that would not just cut into part of his 1967-68 season, but ultimately cut short his career.

He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. Born Robert Gordon Orr in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, Orr was signed to an amateur contract by the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL) when he was 14. After an outstanding performance in junior league hockey in Canada, he became a professional for the Bruins in the 1966-67 season, winning the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. He won the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's best defenseman, and was named a first-team all-star for eight consecutive years (1968-75). During this period he expanded the role of the defensive line by leading offensive charges down the ice and captured the league scoring title in 1970 and 1975. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, and Orr received the Smythe Trophy both years as the outstanding player in the playoffs.

Career Statistics Other Resources Boston Bruins' Coach Harry Sinden said of Orr, "Bobby was a star from the moment they played the National Anthem in his first NHL game." He was expected to be. Orr joined the Bruins in 1966, when he was eighteen, after signing a two-year contract for $75,000, an unprecedented salary for a rookie. He won the 1967 Calder Trophy as the league's outstanding first year player. Harry Howell won the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman that year and said, "I'm glad I won it now, because it's going to belong to that Orr from now on." He was right. Orr won the Norris Trophy the next eight years. There was never another defenseman like Orr, and probably never will be. Often playing forty or more minutes, he could control the puck, and the game, almost at will. He's the only defenseman ever to win the Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer, and he did it twice, in 1970 and 1975. He became the second player in history to score more than 100 points in a season in 1970, when he had a record 87 assists. He won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player three years in a row, 1970-72, and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs twice, in 1970 and 1972. When the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1970, Orr scored the winning goal in overtime of the fourth and final game against the St. Louis Blues. It was his 9th goal and 20th point of the playoffs. They won the cup again in 1972, when Orr had 19 playoff assists to break Jean Beliveau's record.

Hometown hero

It has been said that a hero is never honoured in his hometown, but that is certainly not the case with Bobby Orr. He has long been a hometown hero, appreciated and celebrated. The year 2003 saw the beautiful Bobby Orr Hall of Fame opening in the new Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. His meteoric rise to fame from a stand-out Parry Sound Pee-Wee to a burgeoning OHL talent, to a sparkling NHL star is recorded in detail and accompanied by historic artifact and personal mementoes. Visiting the museum offers great insight into just how great Number Four really was, and what it was that made him so great.

When Bobby Orr - the greatest defenceman ever to lace up the blades - drives around the countryside in the winter he sees something terribly wrong. Orr, who developed his quickness and soft hands playing shinny as a boy on the frozen Seguin River in Parry Sound, Ont., doesn't see kids outside playing hockey on their own anymore. He can't remember the last time he's seen 20 kids out on a backyard rink just for the fun of it. "When was the last time you saw a field with a bunch of kids all by themselves and no adults to mess up the kids' activity?" Orr asked. "The kids wait for it to be organized. They want to go play all of these tournaments, for a little practice time. I learned my skills by dropping the puck just with the kids. I think that's missing today. "You hear all the time about European players playing the game. These players that come over at 17, 18 and 19, they just don't all of a sudden become skilled. From the time they were little fellas, they learned the fundamentals of the game. Let them create." Even 21 years after he announced that he was hanging up the blades in a tearful news conference on Nov. 8 1978, Orr's opinions on the game carry a lot of weight.

Edit this message Bobby Orr is considered one of the greatest to ever play the game of hockey, after Wayne Gretzky of course. Okay, I personally agree with that statement. I used to stay up way too late at night, watching the Bruins play hockey (those west coast games went on until midnight, Boston time), when I should have been getting a good night's sleep before my paper route. And I'll never forget watching live as Bobby Orr scored the winning goal in May 1970, clinching the Stanley Cup 40 seconds into sudden-death overtime!! But it's still just opinion. Let's leave it out *sigh* User:Ed Poor
The statement "Bobby Orr is one of the greatest...." is opinion. The above statement is fact there are plenty of published opinions showing that he is considered by many to be one of the greatest, Gretzky being the greatest. Maybe adding "by many" after "considered" would clarify that. My favourite memory of Bobby Orr is those slow-motion rushes in which he'd skate the length of the ice at about five miles an hour and no one would come near him because they were afraid he'd make them look like fools. Settling In Parry Sound
It was back in the early 1900's, when a man by the name of Robert Orr moved his family to Parry Sound, Ontario, a small town located on the eastern shoreline of Georgian Bay. Robert's son, Doug, had proven himself as an exceptional athlete, excelling in track and hockey. Doug Orr had demonstrated he had what it takes to possibly make it to the NHL, but duty called and he joined the Navy. Doug married Arva Steele and the couple settled in Parry Sound after World War II.
Doug and Arva lived in a modest home on Great North Road. Their first born was a girl, Pat. She was followed by Ron, and then on March 20th, 1948, Robert Gordon Orr came into the world. He was named after his paternal grandfather who was also athletically inclined having played professional soccer in Ireland before coming to Canada. The younger Robert would be come known far and wide and Bobby! Bobby's birth was a difficult one with a degree of risk that had his parents worried he would not survive. Bobby was followed by two more children, Penny and Doug Jr.
Lacing up for the First Time
Bobby was fours years of age when he began skating. He acquired his first pair of skates given to him by a friend of his father, Gene Fernier. The Seguin River became Bobby's rink of choice where he'd spend hour after hour practicing his skating and stick handling playing Shinny. If that was not enough, he would spend another hour nightly practicing that lethal shot in his garage.
