COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Field Hockey’s men’s and women’s Under-21 teams will look to prepare for next year’s Pan American Junior Championships when the two teams compete in international tournaments, Dec. 14-19 in Santiago, Chile. The USA women will compete in a four nation tournament with Argentina, Canada and host Chile, while the USA men will see action in a three nation event featuring Argentina and Chile. The USA will see these same countries as part of 12-team fields at the Pan Am Junior championship in early 2005. The men’s Pan Am event is scheduled for February 16-27 in Havana, Cuba while the women’s tournament is scheduled for March 16-27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top three teams from each of the Pan Am tournaments are expected to qualify for the Junior World Cup tournaments in 2005. The men’s Junior World Cup is scheduled for July in Rotterdam, The Netherlands while the women’s Junior World Cup is slated for September in Santiago. “This will be a great tour for the juniors as we prepare for next year's Jr. Pan Ams,” said USA women’s junior national team coach Tracey Fuchs. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The junior men’s and women’s teams from Argentina handed the young U.S. field hockey squads a double set back as the pre-tournament favorites scored victories over the USA in their respective tournaments in Santiago. The Argentina women defeated the USA junior team, 5-2, while the Argentina men topped the U.S. under-21 men, 8-1. With the loss the U.S. women fall to 0-2-1 in the four nation tournament that also includes Chile and Canada. The USA men drop to 0-2 in a three-nation, double round-robin event with Argentina and Chile. After giving up a quick goal in the second minute of play, the young U.S. team played the favored Argentines even before tying the game in the final minute of the half. Lauren Crandall’s (Doyelstown, Pa./Wake Forest Univ.) goal gave the U.S. a short-lived draw, however Argentina answered immediately and connected on a penalty corner in the final seconds of the half to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

A star of stage and screen makes a happy return to the campus
By Sean Smith
Chronicle Editor
He's traipsed around New York City with Al Pacino, romanced Minnie Driver in the Irish countryside and donned a rubberized body suit to fight crime with George Clooney. But for Chris O'Donnell '92, star of such movies as "Scent of a Woman," "Circle of Friends" and "Batman and Robin," one of his more eagerly anticipated encounters took place last month with a Boston College undergraduate who has little or no aspirations for stage and screen.
During his recent visit to campus, Chris O'Donnell '92 had a chance to finally meet junior Michael DiMattina, the inaugural recipient of a scholarship established by the actor. (Photo by Lee Pellegrini) On April 26, O'Donnell lunched with Michael DiMattina '04, the inaugural recipient of a BC scholarship O'Donnell endowed five years ago. It was the first-ever meeting between the two, who for all their obvious differences share a deep affection for their hometown Chicago - and a strong appreciation for Jesuit and Catholic education. Established by O'Donnell in honor of his mother Julia, the O'Donnell Fund at Boston College provides financial aid for qualified undergraduates from the Chicago area, with preference for needy students from Loyola Academy of Wilmette, Ill., the high school he and DiMattina attended.

RIVER HAWKS EDGE TERRIERS, 3-2
LOWELL, MA (Feb. 9, 2001) - Junior C Dan Fontas (Acton, MA) registered two goals as the UMass Lowell ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 3-2, Friday night in a Hockey East tilt in front of 3,795 at the Tsongas Arena.
The victory enabled the River Hawks to complete a three-game sweep over the Terriers for the first time in the 18-year series history. UML improved to 14-11-3 overall and 7-8-3 in Hockey East while BU slipped to 12-13-2 and 8-8-2.
Following a 1-6-0 start in Hockey East games this season, the River Hawks have put together a 6-2-3 clip in their last 11 games. UML visits Merrimack Sunday at 2 p.m. while the Terriers meet Boston College in the Beanpot Tournament final Monday night at 8 p.m. and return to Hockey East play with a home and home against Providence next weekend.
UML opened the scoring six minutes, 18 seconds into the first period when junior RW Yorick Treille (Grenobles, France) stole the puck from BU senior C Carl Corazzini (Framingham, MA) and tucked a wrist shot by freshman goalie Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALTA).
Fontas registered his first goal 4:40 into the second period when he and junior LW Tom Rouleau (Milwaukee, WI) converted a give-and-go for a 2-0 cushion. The Terriers struck back behind junior LW Jack Baker (South Boston, MA), who grabbed a loose puck at the blue line and beat UML junior goalie Jimi St. John (Windsor, ONT) to the far post.
