Another Milestone in Dany Heatley's Comeback
Today, he skated with his team for the first time since the car crash that beat him up pretty good both physically and emotionally. It does my heart good to see how his teammates, the Atlanta Thrashers' fans, and hockey fans in general (not to mention Dan Snyder's family) are supporting Heatley. His next, and likely most emotionally difficult, challenge will be pulling on the Thrashers sweater and taking the ice as a member of the Thrashers' lineup for the first time (which could be in a little less than a month from now). But, if he's made it this far, I think he'll be all right, given the support he has. ~~ victoria on 1/17/2004 09:17:42 PM

Neely Headlines '05 Hockey Hall Inductees
POSTED: 4:16 pm EDT June 8, 2005 Toronto, ON Former Boston Bruins star right wing Cam Neely headlined the three individuals who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year. Neely is joined by the late Valeri Kharlamov, who starred for the Central Red Army team in the 1970s, in the player category, while Murray Costello, former president of the Canadian Amateur Association, will be inducted as a builder. Neely spent 13 seasons in the NHL three with Vancouver and 10 with Boston before being forced to retire in 1996 due to a hip injury and chronic knee problems. Neely scored 50 goals or more three times during his career, including an even 50 in only 49 games during an injury-shortened 1993-94 campaign.

Neely and Kharlamov, a former Russian superstar who died in 1981, will enter in the players category. Costello, former president of the Canadian Hockey Association, goes in as a builder, or someone who contributed to the advancement of the game.
Among those eligible not selected for induction were Glenn Anderson, Steve Larmer, Dino Ciccarelli, Kevin Lowe and Doug Wilson. Moron 06-08-2005, 11:45 PM Well, ok good for Cam. As long as we're not inducting those Oilers (Glenn Anderson or Kevin Lowe).

June 9: Cam Neely talks about finally getting into the Hall of Fame. NBC Sports
TORONTO - Former Boston Bruins star Cam Neely, the late Valeri Kharlamov and Murray Costello were named to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Neely, a hard-hitting, sharp-shooting power forward, was drafted in 1983 by Vancouver. He played 13 seasons - three in Vancouver and his last 10 in Boston - and scored 50 or more goals three times. His career was cut short by health problems that began with a thigh injury in the 1991 Eastern Conference finals.

HOCKEY HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2005 INDUCTEES
Jim Gregory, Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee, announced today that Valeri Kharlamov and Cam Neely have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player Category. In the Builder Category, former President of the Canadian Amateur Association, Murray Costello, was elected. The vote was made today at the annual meeting of the Selection Committee in Toronto. “The Hockey Hall of Fame is proud to welcome these three outstanding individuals as Honoured Members,” said Jim Gregory. “Their contributions to the game of hockey are well documented and their election to the Hockey Hall of Fame is richly deserved.” Also featured in the exhibition will be the 2005 AGO acquisition, Hush, also by Seth. An important purchase for the Art Gallery of Ontario, the acquisition recognizes comics for the first time as a significant sphere of contemporary creative endeavour, and as a fully articulated art form on its own terms. “This work by Seth was acquired as a work of art, and not an example of popular culture,” said Ben Portis, AGO assistant curator of contemporary art. “What makes Hush the right work for the Gallery is the degree to which it converses with depictions of the Canadian landscape in the AGO collection, from Tom Thomson to today." Born in 1948 in Moscow, Valeri Kharlamov’s accomplishments belied his diminutive 5 ft 8 inch stature. He combined speed, strength, intelligence, spectacular skills and a natural goal scoring ability to fashion an outstanding 14- year career with CSKA Moscow (Central Red Army) in the Soviet league. Kharlamov played in 436 regular season games, recording 293 goals and 214 assists while helping the Red Army team win 11 league championships. He participated in eleven consecutive IIHF World and European championships and helped the Soviet Union win gold on eight occasions. In other international play, he participated in three Olympic Games, winning gold in 1972 and 1976, and was a key member of one of the greatest lines in hockey history, partnering with Army teammates Boris Mikhailov (RW) and Vladimir Petrov (Centre).

It seems that whenever a player with great potential has his career cut short for whatever the reason, we tend to think about what might have been because of what has already happened. In the case of Cam Neely, there may have been great things in store for both him and hockey fans alike, but recurring injuries kept all of us from seeing him at his full potential. Neely began his hockey career with the Ridge Meadows Lightning in the BCAHA, where in the 1981-82 season he managed 73 goals and 141 points in just 64 games. The following season he moved on to the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL, where he netted 56 goals and 120 points in just 72 games. Neely was the Vancouver Canucks first round, and 9th overall draft pick in 1983. Early in the 1983-84 season he was called up to the parent club where in 56 games Neely was good for 16 goals and 31 points. Neely had much the same results over the next two seasons. Neely had two outstanding seasons, 1989-90 and 1990-91. In these two season he had 55 and 51 goals respectively and finished the seasons with 92 and 91 points each. He had joined Phil Esposito as the only two Bruins up to that time with back to back 50 goal seasons. In the 1990-91 playoffs the Bruins faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Finals. Ulf Samuelsson hit Neely in the thigh with his knee and put Neely out. The injury resulted in Neely developing a condition known as myositis ossificans, where a portion of the muscle turns to bone. Coupled with some nagging knee injuries, Neely was forced to sit out much of the next two seasons, playing only 22 games, yet he was still good for 30 points.

What to do in Boston

Just Couldn't Help Myself
... Main June 08, 2005 Congrats Cam! Cam Neely was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame today. Traded to the Bruins in 1986, Cam quickly became a fan favorite in Boston and was a hero to many young men including myself. I have fond memories of my dad letting me stay up late with him to watch bruins games in the late 80's. Powered by Neely and Bourke and supported by guys like Lyndon Byers, Andy Moog and Reggie Lemelin, my preteen self looked up to these guys as role models because, like my father, they were guys you could relate to. If they were not playing hockey, they'd be construction workers or mechanics. Fans identified with these players and owners knew it. Games were affordable, players were not grossly overpaid and the games were way more entertaining. Today, I can't stand hockey. The 2004 hold-out was the nail in the coffin, but for many years, hockey has been moving away from its "rugged" routes. Driven by profits and developing young players too quickly, the league becomes more like the NBA every day. I hope the NHL realizes their errors and corrects them before its fan base moves on for good. Posted by Tom at June 8, 2005 04:44 PM

On Jan. 12, the Bruins will raise Neely's number 8 to the FleetCenter rafters to join such illustrious company as Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque and Phil Esposito. And although he has lived in beantown for nearly 20 years, Neely says he will never forget the community that started him on the road to hockey legend. "I obviously have fond memories of being in Maple Ridge and the minor hockey system in Maple Ridge, it's always nice to come back home," Neely says. In a phone interview with the TIMES on Wednesday, the man whose playing style coined the phrase "power forward" says he is still awed by the honour.
