http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1999/529953.shtml
UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Captain Coyote all Gung-Ho Keith Tkachuk may one day become the No. 1 goal-scoring American-born player of all-time. That would be just great. But at the start of training camp 1999, the only record the Phoenix captain was focusing on was a birth certificate. Tkachuk and his wife, Chantal, were expecting the arrival of their second child in mid-September. At the time they had no idea whether their son Matthew, then 20 months old, would have a baby brother or sister, which was just the way they liked it. Tkachuk's philosophy on goal-scoring coincides with the decision not to know the gender of the unborn child. Good things happen to those who wait. "The puck's going to get to the net eventually," Tkachuk said. "So why not go to the net and wait for it?" This theory has helped Tkachuk score the majority of his 272 career goals in the NHL and gives him a legitimate chance to surpass U.S.-born Joe Mullen's mark of 502. Tkachuk is sixth among active players behind teammate Jeremy Roenick (344 goals heading into the 1999-2000 season), Ed Olczyk (340), Kevin Stevens (315), Mike Modano (311) and Phil Housley (302). But, at age 27, Tkachuk is still in his goal-scoring prime and figures to surpass those ahead of him in the current and coming seasons. Also in the mix are 30-year-old John LeClair (269) and 29-year-old Tony Amonte (248). Of the eight players mentioned, Tkachuk has played the fewest games (526), is the only one to average more than 30 goals per season (34) and is the only one, at each player's current pace, who will score 502 goals in less than the 1,062 games it took Mullen. Tkachuk is on pace to score 502 goals in 970 games, which leaves him about five healthy seasons away.

MCI Center Section NHL Section At Long Last, a Capital City By William Gildea
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, December 5, 1997; Page B8 Tonight the other "city game," as opposed to the more familiar one of basketball, finally arrives in downtown Washington when the Capitals will play Florida in the new MCI Center. A 24-year hockey warmup in Landover will be ended. Former Washington defenseman Yvon Labre, whose Capitals sweater will be raised to the new rafters tonight along with Rod Langway’s, remembers growing up on ice in Sudbury, Ont., and packing excitedly at the age of 16 to Toronto to stay and play junior hockey. He was on his way to the NHL. "Every kid dreamed of playing in the NHL," he said, "and that meant going to the big cities." Chicago Stadium, Detroit’s Olympia, Boston Garden, Madison Square Garden in New York, Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the Forum in Montreal were all downtown, and while all of those historic six teams with the exception of Toronto now play in newer arenas, the ice has been moved only a matter of blocks. While the NHL has expanded across the map, in places as different as Pittsburgh and Tampa, it’s a downtown game. From Inglewood, Calif., where they now play, the Los Angeles Kings sooner or later will be heading to a downtown arena, just as from Landover come the Capitals. William Faulkner thrilled to the speed of the game when he walked in off Manhattan’s streets and was introduced to hockey in 1955 at the old Madison Square Garden on Eighth Avenue. Montreal and the Rangers were going at it; Maurice "Rocket" Richard mesmerized Faulkner, who wrote up the experience of being "an innocent at rinkside" for Sports Illustrated. He found the swift motion of the players "bizarre and paradoxical like the frantic darting of the weightless bugs which run on the surface of stagnant pools," and sensed the presence of boys in the crowd "panting for the hour when they would be Richard or Geoffrion."

Joe Mullen, hockey's newest Hall of Fame member. Joe Mullen: From Hell to the Hall
Nov. 10, 2000
Overcoming obstacles became a way of life for hockey's newest Hall of Fame member. Joe Mullen grew up in a rough and tough neighborhood in New York known as "Hell's Kitchen," where only the strong survived. His father Tom, who worked at Madison Square Garden as a member of the ice crew, introduced Mullen to hockey at an early age. The elder Mullen would bring home discarded sticks for his four sons Tom, Kenny, Joe and Brian to use after school as they honed their skills on roller skates on the blacktop of a school yard right across the street from the apartment building, which was located on 49th Street between 9th and 10th avenues in Manhattan. The Mullen brothers would play pickup games until the sun went down and they could no longer see the roll of black electrical tape that they were using as their puck. The concrete ground of the school yard, enclosed by a chain-link fence, became their hockey rink which helped paved the way to the NHL for two of the four hockey-loving brothers, Joe and Brian.

Sean Field made 25 saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season for BU.
AMHERST, Mass. - A season-high 6,392 fans saw UMass outshoot Boston University, 25-19, but fail to get anything going offensively, as the Minutemen dropped their fourth straight game, 2-0, on Friday night at the Mullins Center. UMass drops to 14-14-1 overall and 8-12-0 in Hockey East heading into Saturday's tilt with UMass Lowell at the Mullins Center.
The third-largest crowd in school history opened the game on its feet, but Boston University quieted it quickey. BU took full advantage of the game's first power play, scoring at the 5:12 mark of the first period. John Sabo was stopped from point-blank range, but Brian Collins picked up the loose puck in front of UMass goalie Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.), and was stopped once, but slid home a shot weak-side off his own rebound for his seventh goal of the year.
UMass nearly tied the game moments later when Jeff Lang (Westwood, Mass.) fired a shot off the post from the right slot. The game was delayed momentarily as the officials reviewed the play, and waved off the goal to keep the Terrier lead at 1-0, which was the score at the end of the first period.
