Here’s a change from the free agency talk
Have you ever looked at pictures (or been in) the Montreal Forum, Boston Garden, or Maple Leaf Gardens? Ever looked at the banners hanging from the ceiling? All those championship banners and retired numbers hanging up there. Numbers of players like Maurice Richard, Bobby Orr, Tim Horton, Phil Espisito, and Ken Dryden. You know how impressive it looks when you walk in there. You look at the banners and even a non-hockey fan would relize these guys are winners. Well, the point of this article is to talk about the Penguins and retired numbers. Joe Mullen in particular. Mullen grew up in New York (like many other US hockey players) playing hockey with his brother Brian (who was also in the NHL) and his other friends. His rookie season was played with the Blues sharing one lead in goals and taking one with 43. He went to Calgary and that was the turning point of his career. He won two Presidents Trophies and one Stanley Cup. In addition to the pair of Lady Byngs he took home. He was traded to Pittsburgh before the 90-91 season after suffering a possible career ending injury. Mullen added leadership and experience to the early season Pens. Mario Lemieux was out for several months at the beginning of the season with a rare bone disease. Which meant players like Kevin Stevens, Mark Recchi, John Cullen, Paul Coffey, and Joe Mullen had to step up. And they did. In the playoffs Joe Mullen had a hot streak with 8 goals 9 assists and 17 points. Including two goals in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Other '97 hockey highlights: Stars Champs Trades Coaching Changes ... Oddities EXPANSION : The June decision to add teams in Tennessee, Georgia, Minnesota and Ohio ups membership to 30 by the autumn of the year 2000. REALIGNMENT : Toronto switches conferences next season, meaning more games with Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo and Boston, and a rekindling of the traditional Maple Leafs-Canadiens rivalry. WHAT WE SEE : Blink and you'll miss something. There's a killer whale on Vancouver jerseys now and most teams have third jerseys. It's called marketing. Even the Canadiens will have an altered appearance on occasion, although that's another two years down the road.

    RHI 1999 PLAYER DRAFT
Questions abound: Which league will players choose? The draft raised as many questions as it answered, as Roller Hockey International, returning for its sixth year of play after a year's hiatus, will compete with rival Major League Roller Hockey for players this season. Joe Bonvie, Inline Hockey Central's 1998 Pro Athlete of the Year, who played for the San Jose Rhinos before RHI's year off, and the Columbus Hawks in MLRH last year, says he is keeping his options open. "As of now, I'm undecided," Bonvie said. "I loved playing in both cities, so it will be a very tough decision. I have strong roots in San Jose, and Columbus has made every effort to make me feel like a crucial part of their roller hockey development in Major League Roller Hockey." Bonvie said that things will get interesting as the two leagues jockey for the players' loyalties. "It seems as if the RHI draft was a shotgun approach, as most of the best players were drafted," Bonvie said. "That doesn't mean they will play, or play in RHI. I would think teams would draft players who showed some kind of verbal interest or commitment to their organization. The bottom line is that there are two leagues and not enough quality roller hockey players around to fill both of them, so it's going to be a fight for teams to get the players they want. It will be interesting come opening night to see where everyone filtered to." "It's a crapshoot right now," agreed Buffalo Wings' coach Lou Franceschetti. "Some of these guys will change their minds after a couple of months; they'll say they'll play right now but two months down the road, they might choose a different way to stay in shape over the summer. I'm looking for about 30 to 40 percent of the players chosen in [the] draft to stick with their teams."

Stephen Greeley scored the game-winning goal for BU.
Junior Steve Greeley scored his first goal of the season early in the third period to help lead the Boston University hockey team to a 2-1 win over Merrimack before a sellout crowd of 3806 at B.U.'s Walter Brown Arena on Saturday night.
For the nation's seventh-ranked Terriers, it was their fourth straight win, as they are now 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-0 in Hockey East action. In the meantime, Merrimack slipped to an overall record of 2-5-1 and a 1-3-0 mark in the league.
With the score knotted at 1-1, and a faceoff to the right of Merrimack goalie Joe Exter (30 saves), the Terriers' Gregg Johnson got the puck over to Frantisek Skladany. He, in turn slipped the puck over to Freddy Meyer who was on the left wing boards. Meyer then put a seeing-eye-pass on Greeley's stick, which was just to the left of Exter. Greeley reached back for the puck and slipped it past the Merrimack goalie, and the Terriers had the game-winning goal at 5:33 of the period.
"Freddy really made the play with his pass," Greeley said after the game. "I had my stick behind me, and Freddy put the puck right on the stick. He put it where he had to."
