Growing up in the heart of New York City and not having hockey skates until the age of 10 are just a couple of the obstacles Joseph Mullen overcame to become the preeminent U.S.-born NHL player of his era. Joe was born in Hell's Kitchen, New York on February 26, 1957. He was born to Tom and Marion Mullen, who would be instrumental in steering a young Joe through the proper choices in life. He learned his early hockey skills on the street wearing roller skates and with a role of electrical tape in place of the puck. His father worked at Madison Square Garden and would frequently bring home discarded sticks for Joe and his brother Brian to use. Joe finally received his first pair of skates at age 10 and instantly began to flourish. He would play four seasons in the New York Metro Junior Hockey League and during his final season against weaker competition recorded unheard of totals with 110 goals and 182 points in only 40 games. The next season 1975-76, Mullen was off to play for the Boston College Eagles, however, unlike most aspiring hockey players, Boston College was unable to offer him a scholarship and he was forced to spend $700 to get through the year. They money proved to be well worth it though, gaining a full ride for the next three seasons, his final two of which he was a 1st Team All-American. Following his final year in Boston, 1978-79, Mullen had his first opportunity to represent his country at the World Championships in Moscow, recording 8 points in 8 games.

St. Louis Blues 1980-1986
Calgary Flames 1986-1990 Boston Bruins 1995-1996 Wing Born: February 26, 1957 At the time of his retirement in 1997, Joe Mullen had scored more goals (502) and points (1,063) than any American-born player in NHL history. He earned three Stanley Cups, two Lady Byng Trophies, a Lester Patrick Award and a First Team All-Star berth in his career. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000. Mullen is a native of New York City and grew up playing roller hockey in the "Hell's Kitchen" section of Manhattan. After playing four years of junior hockey, he went on to play collegiately at Boston College, where he became an All-American in both 1978 and 1979. As a junior, in 1978, he even led the Eagles to the NCAA championship game against rival Boston University. Following college, Mullen was recruited to be a member of the fabled 1980 U.S. Olympic "Miracle on Ice" team that won the gold medal at Lake Placid. However, because his father was ill at the time, he opted to instead turn pro and use the new income to help out his family. In August of 1979 he signed with the Blues. He was sent down to the CHL for two seasons though, where he proceeded to win both the Rookie of the Year and league MVP awards, respectively.

Thomas Troy Taylor The Mad Dog Inline Hockey Club would like to pay tribute to long time roller hockey coach Troy Taylor. Troy was involved in a fatal accident on September 8th in Middleburg as a result of colliding with a truck. He leaves behind his wonderful wife Pam and two sons, Colt and Connor. Troy and his family were deeply involved in roller hockey in the region, having been associated with the Loudoun Roller Hockey League, the Shenandoah Inline League, the Mad Dogs Inline Club, and the Thunder inline program. He was a fine coach and a great father. We will miss him greatly and we ask everyone to pray for his family. She would like for them to wear their Mad Dog jerseys.

While his USHL offensive numbers were respectable with Sioux Falls, I'd really appreciate some more talent analysis from those who have seen him play.
Haven't heard much about him, other than his bloodlines.
