Michigan takes I hockey title with overtime win over Boston College
BY STEPHEN R. HAGWELL
STAFF WRITER BOSTON This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Michigan men's ice hockey team. With only five seniors on the squad's 25-player roster, coach Red Berenson and his Wolverines were looking at the 1997-98 season as a stepping stone to the future. The future arrived quickly. Freshman Josh Langfeld scored at 17:51 in overtime and goaltender Marty Turco turned aside 28 shots as Michigan edged Boston College, 3-2, to win the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship April 4 at the FleetCenter. Langfeld's game-winning goal gave the Wolverines their second title in three years and championship-record ninth overall. Michigan entered the championship as the fifth-ranked team in the nation and the No. 3 seed in the West region. Boston College, appearing in the championship game for the first time since 1978, placed second for the third time. The Eagles have won one title (1949). The contest was the third-longest in NCAA championship-game history. The game also set an attendance record of 18,276.

WOLVERINES CAPTURE 1998 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THRILLING 3-2 OVERTIME VICTORY
BOSTON
The Michigan Wolverines captured their second National Championship in three seasons, both in overtime, and NCAA record ninth in program history, with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston College Eagles in front of a NCAA Final Four record 18,276 fans in the Fleet Center. The Wolverines received a great game from freshman Mark Kosick, who scored two goals, and outstanding goaltending by senior Marty Turco, who made 28 saves for his second national title, but the hero of the game was freshman Josh Langfeld, who scored the title clinching goal with 2:09 left in the first overtime period. Following a Boston College two-on-one opportunity deep in the Michigan zone, the Wolverines cleared the zone and worked the puck in the corner to the left of the Boston College goal. Chris Fox took a pass from Scott Matzka deep in the corner and held the puck until he received support from Langfeld. Langfeld took the drop pass and, from the left wing boards, wristed what looked to be a harmless shot into the short side of the net for his 19th goal of the season and a goal that set off a wild celebration on the ice. Turco turned aside four great Eagles scoring chances in the overtime session alone as he captured all-NCAA Tournament and Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Twenty-five seconds into the overtime session, BC forward Brian Gionta unleashed a slap shot from the slot, resulting in a great Turco pad save. Boston College then hit the crossbar and post on opportunities 8:00 and 10:40 into the extra session, before getting its final opportunity 33 seconds before Langfeld scored the game winner.

However, to their credit, the Canucks took advantage of a lax schedule early and won their first three games. Their 7-4-1 start marked the franchise's best October since 1993. By November 22, the Canucks were still in first place in the Northwest Division, but injuries were once again beginning to expose the team's lack of depth. A 6-3 loss in Nashville on that night would begin a skid of five wins in 32 games that would see the team plummet to 12th place in the conference.

Physical play keeps men's hockey close to upset win over Michigan

Hit the faster, more skilled Wolverines. Clog the middle on their rushes. Turn the game into a grind. Frustrate Princeton's Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe with its Eastern College Athletic Conference style of hockey. Then, hope for a break at the end.
If the No. 6-seeded Tigers could do all this and keep the game close, then they would have a shot at knocking off the third-seeded Wolverines.
"The success of the ECAC against the CCHA rests in not giving up the odd-man rush," junior center Jeff Halpern said before the game. "We're definitely going to try to clog up the middle and force the game into a grind."
"They're a really quick skating team out there," head coach Don Cahoon said of Michigan. "They've got size and speed." The Tigers' goal was to slow the Wolverines down, and for the first two periods, Princeton did. The only goal the Tigers allowed in the first two periods came on a Michigan power play.

Tigers' physical play key to upset chances
John Weicher
Princetonian Staff Writer
Photo by Brian Rokus The men's hockey team will need physical play from sophomore forward Benoit Morin (No. 14) in order to create scoring opportunities. A way games in stadiums teeming with screaming, hostile fans. Most coaches expect to prepare their teams for such an unfriendly environment at least a few times during the regular season. But when playoff time rolls around, neutral sites tend to be filled with a large contingent of unbiased fans interspersed with bastions of each team's partisans.
Try telling that to head coach Don Cahoon and the men's hockey team.
The NCAA selection committee "rewarded" Princeton (18-10-7) for its dramatic run through the Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason tournament with a first round matchup in the NCAA tournament against the No. 4 team in the nation, Michigan (30-11-1), on its home ice, Yost Arena, in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight. Prairie View The Tigers' relatively mediocre record relegated them to a No. 6 seed in the West region. A placement in the East Regional would have set up an immediate rematch against East No. 3 seed Clarkson (23-8-3), whom Princeton defeated Saturday in the final of the ECAC tournament, 5-4, in double overtime.
