NCAA Tournament: Michigan tames the Gophers
Associated Press
March 24, 1996 East Lansing, Mich. Mike Legg has never played lacrosse, but a goal he scored on a move reminiscent of that sport impressed his teammates who have.
Bill Muckalt scored his second goal of the game with 2:01 left in the third period Sunday to lift Michigan to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA West Regional. But most of the postgame conversation centered around Legg's second-period goal that tied the game at 2-2.
Legg bent over behind the Minnesota net, picked the puck up on the blade of his stick, skated left and flipped it in behind goalie Steve DeBus at 7:06.
"I've never played lacrosse in my life," Legg said. "I just try to use gravity to get the puck on my stick and flick it in. I never thought it would really work in a game. You have to be alone behind the net. It doesn't work if someone's on you."
Legg's move impressed Muckalt.
"I've played lacrosse and I can't do that," Muckalt said. "We were all in awe seeing him do that. He does it in practice all the time, but we never thought he'd have the guts to do it in an NCAA tournament game when we were losing. But it was a huge goal and gave us a big lift."

Muckalt's 4-point weekend leads Blue over WCHA rivals
By Chris Farah
Daily Sports Writer Edges are fundamental to hockey. Without an edge, skates wouldn't go very far or very fast on the ice. Without an edge, sticks wouldn't be able to make a clean swipe at the puck. Without an edge, the Michigan hockey team ... well, the Wolverines probably don't know what they'd do without an edge, because they've been living on it all season long. And this weekend's College Hockey Showcase was no different. Michigan (11-3-1) played Minnesota (4-10-0) on Friday and Wisconsin (7-3-0) yesterday at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines won both games by air-tight margins, beating the Golden Gophers, 4-3, and the sixth-ranked Badgers, 2-1.
EMILY NATHAN/Daily
Michigan forward Bill Muckalt squeezed by the Badgers yesterday to score the "Heart-attack hockey - we're playing it every week," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "We're not playing teams where there's much of a difference between the two teams. That's what you're going to get, you're going to get close games." There may not have been much of a difference between Michigan and the other teams, but there were two differences - Michigan goaltender Marty Turco and forward Bill Muckalt.

'M' hockey must regroup after departure of seniors
By Mark Snyder
Daily Sports Editor When Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson looks in the mirror each morning, he must wonder if someone is out to get him. In four of the last five seasons, his team has reached the ultimate college hockey showcase: the national semifinals. But only once - in 1996 - has his team returned with the national championship. Last season, Michigan again came up a game short of the championship, falling to Boston University in the semifinals, 3-2. If resiliency is Berenson's forte, then this season should be a great opportunity to demonstrate his skills. Michigan graduated nine seniors who rewrote the program's record book, and now comes the time to replace the departures. Headed by the recruiting efforts of assistant coaches Mel Pearson and Billy Powers, the freshman class taking the ice in Ann Arbor this winter will be one of the largest in the nation. The class consists of the seven players who signed in the winter recruiting season, along with the three who were added in the spring. Each of the freshmen adds a separate dimension to the program, but all also have a common bond with respect to college hockey - inexperience.

World Championship Flashback: Jeff Halpern
Jeff Halpern has played five seasons with the Washington Capitals. MORE COVERAGE FOLLOW THE GAMES While there's no U.S. television coverage of the games, you can watch them all on the web through a service offered by MediaZone.com More Information Link With more than two dozen former collegians slated to participate in the 2005 IIHF World Championship, our former college hockey heroes will be trying to make memories on one of the sport's biggest stages. With that in mind, Inside College Hockey takes this opportunity to reflect on some of those players' memorable college moments. It's ironic that a place like Princeton, which prides itself on excellence in every endeavor, owes some of its most memorable sporting events to losses. Bill Bradley's exploits in the Final Four are retold often, yet the best he did was a third-place finish; the famous upset bid against Georgetown also fell just short. The most memorable game of Jeff Halpern's career was also a loss, as the Tigers nearly took out Michigan, which would go on to win the national championship, in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. A number of higher-profile teams have known the disappointment of losing to the Wolverines at Yost Ice Arena in the NCAAs, including No. 2-seeded North Dakota the following night. Princeton, which only qualified for the tournament by winning the ECAC playoffs, came close to this upset, which would have been the ultimate irony.

Calgary The Flames nearly stole the show when they made two late-afternoon trades on Saturday. They dumped locker-room disaster Valerie Bure and defenceman Jason Wiemer to Florida for Rob Niedermeyer and a second-round pick. The Flames give up quality defenceman Wiemer while they had been looking to send Bure out of town for a long time. To get Niedermayer was a huge bonus. Andrei Medvedev who was the second-highest rated European goaltender by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau. Fred Braithwaite, Daniel Tkaczuk, Sergei Varlamov and a ninth-round pick to St. Louis for Roman Turek and a fourth-round pick. Chuck Kobasew with their top pick and hope that he will be able to help solve their scoring woes in the future.

    History
Founded in 1947, the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) began choosing men's All-America hockey teams in 1958. The term "All-America" is actually a bit misleading, because two teams are chosen, one from the east and one from the west. Several times, one of the teams has had a player or two more than the other. The AHCA began choosing women's All-America teams in 2000. The women's teams are not regionally divided. Top of Page

Plus a monthly NHL hockey trivia contest. Causing some stir today, it seemsthat RW bill muckalt will be a healthy scratch tonight.
    http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Court/3344/oldindex.html
Tom's Hockey Trivia Welcome!! This website is for the die-hard hockey trivia fan, as well as for my fellow die-hard Islander fans. Do you think you are an expert on the NHL? Well what about the IHL or the AHL? I might even throw a few questions in there on the WHL, OHL, QMJHL and College hockey. And let's not forget the WHA or the Olympics. Hey, if it has anything to do with hockey i'm gonna ask it. So be prepared. The format will be pretty easy. Every two weeks I will ask 5 questions. Each question will be worth 10 points. At the end of the first two weeks of the month I will post the leaders for that particular month. At the end of the month, the player with the most points after the 10 questions will be the champ.
    January 26th, 2001
Congrats to Travis Favretto who ended the year of 2000 with a perfect score of 100 points, becoming only the second player to do so. His win ends a great run by Stéphane Robert , who had 8 straight championship wins. It turned out to be a good competition with newcomer Jason Kurylo also putting up a great fight. Hopefully there will be more battles like that in 2001. I know i'm a bit behind. I'm planning on giving the first half questions for January at least a week, could be more. There will be plenty time. I decided to bring back a favorite of mine for this month, the Who Am I question. Couple of tough ones I think. Good Luck! And, please sign my Guestbook if you have not already. It's begging for some cyber ink. Thanks! ;)
