Tom Barrasso capped an ordinary series with an ordinary game on Sunday. The absence of Kasparaitis was noticeable as Barrasso had to work much harder than his Montreal counterpart, but he didn't make the stops he needed to. Andy Moog spent most of Sunday sitting back and watching the Hab defense bottle up the Penguin attack. He made 21 saves, the best of which was on Stu Barnes in the first period, and was perfect the entire night. EDGE: Moog.

31 CHL Players invited to National Junior Team Selection Camp
Monday, December 4, 2000
The Canadian Hockey Association identified the 34 players that have been invited to attend Canada's National Junior Team Selection camp and the Canadian Hockey League will provide 31 of the 34 players that were selected. The Selection Camp will be held from December 13-18 at the Beatrice Ice Garden in North York, Ontario. Twenty-two players will be selected to the final roster that will represent Canada at the 2001 World Junior Hockey Championships to be held in Russia from December 26 to January 5. Seven of the CHL players that were named were members of Canada's bronze medal team from the 2000 World Junior Hockey Championships. One player, Brian Finley of the Barrie Colts, was a member of the Canadian team that won the silver medal in Winnipeg at the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championships.

RSS For Tallon, officially on the job since last week, it will be his first major hire and one of the most critical decisions a general manager has to make. Tallon fired coach Brian Sutter last week. Sutter was 91-118-37 in three seasons. Yawney, 39, is the coach of the Norfolk (Va.) Admirals of the American Hockey League. There are certain absolutes that general managers look for when hiring a coach. "The ability to get along with people is a big thing," said former Blackhawks GM Mike Smith. "The coach is under a tremendous amount of pressure and strain and the ability to get along with people is very important." "This happens all the time, a coach goes to a new organization and says, 'Bring in Joe, he's better than Bob,' " Smith said. "It's not his job to say Joe is better than Bob. His job is to get whoever it is to play as part of a team."

... Archives Tippett signs on to role as teacher of young Stars Coach's next team is unlikely to be as experienced as his last
08:22 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 By RICHARD DURRETT / The Dallas Morning News
The Stars announced Tuesday that Tippett has signed a two-year contract extension, which club sources said included a base salary of $600,000 to $700,000 per season. Associate coach Rick Wilson and assistant coaches Andy Moog and Mark Lamb signed one-year deals. When Tippett accepted the Stars job before the 2002-03 season, he was charged with molding a high-priced, veteran team to push for the Stanley Cup before the NHL lockout. Hockey Bio (from Stars' official site) Now, as the league prepares for a new collective bargaining agreement that will probably include a salary cap, Tippett is likely to coach a team younger and less experienced. "We'll have young guys we have to inject in the lineup, and that's going to take more teaching and explaining the way we want our group to play," said Tippett, who is vacationing in Minnesota.

STRENGTHS: One of the most experienced goaltenders in the league. Comes out of net well to challenge shooters. Very sharp reflexes. Quick at regaining his feet.
WEAKNESSES: Very small for an NHL goaltender; he allows an inordinate number of top shelf goals. Five-hole is also a problem. Poor skating ability hampers his lateral movement and his getting back into the net.

"You get pretty wired up. Sometimes it gets you a little emotional on the ice, a little too fired up."
Digitally enhanced photo by Al Bello/Allsport A similar scene is being played out in dressing rooms throughout the NHL. The exact number of players who use Sudafed, a nonprescription drug that contains the stimulant pseudoephedrine, in an effort to boost their performance on the ice, is unclear. Two NHL trainers estimate that before a game 20% of the league's players routinely take over-the-counter medications that contain pseudoephedrine, not to combat the sniffles, as the manufacturers intended, but to feel a little buzz. The NHL, however, disputes that figure, saying the percentage of players using drugs such as Sudafed is much lower and that they use them for medicinal purposes only. Montreal right wing Mark Recchi sees no correlation between pseudoephedrine and dirty play but doesn't deny that Sudafed gets him going. "You get a bit of an upper from it," says Recchi, who no longer takes the medication but admits that at one time he used it every 10 or 15 games. "You get pretty wired up. Sometimes it gets you a little emotional on the ice, a little too fired up."

    http://www.rpweld3.com/reviews/playoffh.html
    Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.
