1997 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees
Mario Lemieux, Player Category
Mario Lemieux was arguably the most naturally talented player of his generation. His offensive wizardry and leadership changed the fortunes of the Pittsburgh Penguins and brought the franchise consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. Lemieux amassed 613 goals and 1,494 points in 745 regular season games while capturing a multitude of individual awards and accolades. He also distinguished himself on the international stage by leading Canada to the 1987 Canada Cup championship over the Soviet Union. Born in Montreal, Quebec on October 5, 1965, Lemieux starred at every level during his amateur development. He became a legend in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and scored a record 282 points during his last year of eligibility in 1983-84. In one of the most obvious picks in Draft history, the Pittsburgh Penguins chose Mario Lemieux fist overall in 1984. Prophetically, he scored on his first NHL shift and finished the season with 100 points which brought him the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. Following his sophomore year he won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top NHL performer as selected by his peers. In 1987-88 Lemieux won his first of six Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s top scorer and was also the recipient of the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player for the first time. Although he missed a sizable portion of the 1990-91 regular season, Lemieux returned to score 44 points in 23 play-off games while leading Pittsburgh to it’s first Stanley Cup triumph. His value to the Penguins was underscored when he received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the post-season. The next season the Penguins repeated as Cup winners and Lemieux won his second consecutive Conn Smythe Trophy. At the mid point of the 1992-93 schedule he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease but returned to lead his club to the President’s Trophy as the NHL’s regular season points leader. In the latter stages of his career, Lemieux won the Art Ross Trophy four times in the last six seasons he played and continued to score some of the most picturesque goals in recent memory.

Edmonton Oilers 1983-84 to 1989-90
Within five years Edmonton will have the Stanley Cup. " - Oiler owner Peter Pocklington in 1979. The response he got was mainly laughter, but Pocklinton's prediction came true. We haven't won four or five in a row, but I would think we had the start of a dynasty. If we continue to be dedicated, with the players and organization we have, there's no reason why we can't be a dynasty. " - Paul Coffey in 1984. He's the best. There should be a league rule that he has to be passed around from team to team every year. " - Bruins coach Terry O'Reilly, referring to Wayne Gretzky. It's sweeter this time. When you're the biggest team on the block, people want to beat you. " - Paul Coffey.
The 1983-84 squad averaged 5.58 goals per game, an NHL record. The 1983-84 and 1985-86 Oilers included three 50-goal scorers and four 100-point players, both league records. The Oilers, known for their incredible offensive output, were also an effective defensive unit. In the 1988 Final, they surrendered just nine goals as they swept the Bruins in four games to win their fourth Stanley Cup in five years. In three of the four games the Bruins managed fewer than 20 shots on goal. In the 1988 Final, the Oilers got an extra home game, after a power failure at the Boston Garden forced the cancellation of Game 4.

56. UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (11/02/97)
Here then are one hockey expert s predictions for the current hockey campaignwhich faced off a Veteran netminder andy moog will stabilize the defense.
http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1997/449716.shtml
UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach "Ducky" walks off pond for final time The handwriting was on the medical chart ... and on the Philadelphia Flyers' depth chart. Ukrainian Dale "Ducky" Hawerchuk ended a 16-year career when he announced his retirement last August 25. The 34-year-old center, 10th on the NHL all-time scoring list, caught very few by surprise with the news. First, doctors confirmed an arthritic condition in his left hip would only get worse if he continued to play. And second, with the off-season acquisition of Chris Gratton, the Flyers had six players who can play center. Hawerchuk was examined by arthritis experts at the University of St. Louis, who advised him to call it a career. "I was working out this summer and saying to myself, 'I spent 16 years in this league and I'd sure like to walk away from it and not crawl away from it,' " Hawerchuk said. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Toronto native finished with 518 goals, 891 assists and 1,409 points. Hawerchuk, whose most productive seasons were as a Winnipeg Jet, is expected to gain entry into the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in the year 2000. He enjoyed six 100-point seasons during a fruitful career that included stops with Winnipeg, the Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia.

57. UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (05/24/98)
Kids growing up in the land to the north of us still pick ice hockey Montreal Canadiens Veteran andy moog has solidified what was a volatile playoff
http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1998/219819.shtml
UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Hockey still reigns as Canada's top sport Nothing's changed. It's the same as it's been for the last hundred or so years. Kids growing up in the land to the north of us still pick ice hockey overwhelming over any other organized team sport. And why not? What used to be simply a favorite form of physical education or a youngster's automatic choice for activity with friends has certainly blossomed into a potential career move. Witness so many young Ukrainian Canadians entering the ranks of Canadian junior hockey: some 49 known young Ukrainians were found playing pucks in the three major junior leagues in 1997-1998. Good chance there are many others. And why not? With upcoming expansion plans, the National Hockey League will total 30 teams within the next two seasons. The bottom line: this means jobs. Well-paying jobs. This hockey pundit's research attempts revealed some 28 pucksters of Ukrainian origin learning their trade in the aggressive Western Hockey League, another 18 training in the Ontario Hockey League and just three lonely Ukes signed up in the Quebec League. Below is a brief listing and mention of each and every one of them with their most recent scoring stats in parentheses. A tidbit of official information comes first. The Canadian Hockey League is an alliance of the three major junior leagues: Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League. After the regular season, the three leagues compete in a round-robin tournament to decide the Memorial Cup championship.

Soccer and Hockey alike in terms of scoring?
Visualize High Scoring Outdoor Soccer No way! There is a big difference between ice hockey and soccer. A soccer fan may watch a team for 2 years without seeing a seven goal game (ie: 4-3, 5-2, 6-1, 7-0). A hockey fan often experiences as many nine goal games in a season as shutouts. The commentators of soccer matches will call a 5-3 game defensively sloppy. The commentators of ice hockey matches will call a 5-3 game very entertaining, but still might long for hockey the way it was played in the '80's when the offense really ruled the rink, and 7-4 games were very common. A soccer fan experiences a shutout roughly 50% of the time. A hockey fan sits through a shutout around 15% of the time. Yes, outdoor soccer scoring and ice hockey scoring are world's apart. Across the board scoring in hockey is looked at as a good thing, whereas outdoor soccer scoring above the 3-2 level is viewed by purists as something which should be avoided. Look people

Street Hockey Scouting Reports We usually play hockey at Marion Schilling Elementary School in Valleyview. I would like to take this time to give thanks to the street hockey gods for blessing us with this wonderful facility. The concrete is as smooth as glass, and fencing above the boards keeps high shots from escaping the play area. We like to run across the road to Kimiko's house to fill up our water bottles. Some of the best times of my life were at MSES. Here are the scouting reports on some local street hockey players: Dan Dingwall Sticks: Dingwall was the captain of the Valleyview Regulators, and took on the leadership role well. He can control the play well when he gets the puck, due to his great passing and hockey sense. He has a strong one-timer, as well as an accurate wrist shot. He sees the ice well and knows where he should be. When he gets the puck, he can go one on one with almost anybody, and often gets a good scoring chance in this way. He will often get up a head of steam this way though, and will miss the easy pass. Leave him alone and he will get the puck in the net somehow. His biggest weakness is that he thinks he's a has-been and it can affect his performance. Pads: Dan is becoming a known goaltender, and will volunteer gallantly for the position. He plays a stand-up style much like Andy Moog, and will usually stop it if he can see it. He knows when to go down though, and will flop around to stop rebounds and one-timers from point blank. His favourite thing to do is to stack the pads, and isn't afraid to take that risk. He has a rather weak five-hole, because he doesn't always hold his stick between his legs; He has been known to let in some weak goals along the ground.
