Andy Moog Andy Moog—Stepping Out Of The Shadows Edmonton fans barely knew Andy Moog when the Oilers named him their starting goalie for their first-rou nd playoff series against the heavily favoured Montréal Canadiens. After all, Moog had only played seven National Hockey League (NHL) games of major-league hockey, and all that season. By the time that series was over, Moog had become a household name in Edmonton. He outplayed Canadiens net minder Richard Sevigny in every game of the series and was a major reason why the Oilers swept the Canadiens in three short games. Instead, the Oilers gave the starting role to rookie Grant Fuhr , and Moog spent much of the 1981-82 campaign in the minors. After the Oilers’ first-round playoff loss in 1982, Sather decided he would platoon his two star goalies. For the next two seasons, Fuhr and Moog split regular season and playoff playing time. When the Oilers took their first Stanley Cup in 1984 , Fuhr started the series by shutting out the Islanders, but Moog won the deciding game in Edmonton.

Catching up with Andy Moog
May 1, 2004 DALLAS - The last time the Bruins were in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Boston Garden stood tall on Causeway Street and the man between the pipes was Andy Moog. Moog was always a fan favorite; his No. 35 Bruins jersey was a popular sight at games. During the Stanley Cup Finals, a Boston radio station even transformed Def Leppard's popular song "Animal" into an "Andy Moog" version. ADVERTISEMENT "They were real demanding of the team," Moog said. "They wanted us to play hard and play aggressively and play with passion every night. I think they were prepared to accept the outcome if we showed up and played that way. They were demanding fans, but in a good way." In all, Moog enjoyed five seasons with the Bruins. He currently ranks among Bruins goaltending top ten categories in games played (261), minutes played (15,056) and wins (136). After retiring from the NHL, Moog became the owner of the Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League. It was a different perspective for Moog who went from on the ice to the front office. "It was an opportunity to get involved on the other side of the business," said Moog. "It was a great learning experience and did that for about four years. I am no longer involved in that, but it was just a really good opportunity to understand the game from the business side."

Raycroft appears to have the goods for a postseason run
By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 2/22/2004 It would be difficult to argue that Joe Thornton is not the best player on the Bruins roster. When Thornton brings his A game to the rink, he has shown just how dominating a presence he can be. Many believe that as Thornton goes, so go the Bruins. An exception to that is club president Harry Sinden. After a convincing victory over Toronto Thursday, Sinden was asked if Thornton was the key, and he said, "A little bit, but more this guy. More this guy." ADVERTISEMENT "This guy" is goaltender Andrew Raycroft. Sinden said the fundamental reason the Bruins have a chance to win every night is the play of their No. 1 netminder. Truthfully, when was the last time anyone could say that? No one calls Raycroft "Andy" but the last time was when another Andrew Andy Moog was between the pipes. Raycroft remained at 21 wins after last night's 3-3 tie with the Carolina Panthers. For the last decade, the Boston net has been a revolving door of second-tier talent. The goaltending has been subpar in virtually every postseason since Moog was shipped out in 1993. Raycroft is only 23 and is that rare find: a goalie the club actually developed in the organization.

CBA: The Eagleson scandal
Sunday, November 16, 2003 NHL players have never had it better. Since 1990-91 they've seen the average player salary go from $276,000 to $1.79 million. They are treated a lot better than some of their predecessors were during their playing days in the National Hockey League. And they owe a big debt of gratitude to a fellow named Carl Brewer and another one named Russ Conway. Brewer, former player, and Conway, a newspaper writer, were instrumental in exposing the fraud and corruption during Alan Eagleson's reign as head of the NHLPA and his time as the most powerful man in hockey. It helped bring justice to hundreds of retired NHL players, and set the stage for big changes in the league's relations with the players. "If I had my way, Carl would be in the Hall of Fame as a builder. I think he did more for players than any of the owners in the National Hockey League," Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Mahovlich once said. Brewer, who died in 2001, had a hand in helping create and then helping destroy the career of Alan Eagleson, once the most powerful man in hockey. The man who helped a teenaged sensation named Bobby Orr negotiate a record contract with the Boston Bruins. The man who helped establish the National Hockey League Players' Association. The man who organized the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and The Soviet Union, and the 1976 Canada Cup. The man who would be elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The man who ended up going to prison for defrauding NHL players and lining his pockets and those of his family, friends and associates with money that belonged to the players. The man who brought scandal to professional hockey.

CHA NAMES ANDY MOOG AS GOALTENDING CONSULTANT CALGARY, AB - The Canadian Hockey Association named Andy Moog as a goaltending consultant for Canada's Men's Olympic Team and Canada's National Junior Team, the CHA announced on Wednesday. Moog, 41, will assist the Men's Olympic Team in assessing the goaltenders who may play for other countries. With the National Junior Team, Moog will assist the coaching staff led by Stan Butler, of the OHL's Brampton Battalion, in coaching and evaluating the goaltenders during the team's Selection Camp in December, 2001. "Andy's background in international hockey and his current responsibilities with the Vancouver Canucks make him a perfect fit for this role," said Wayne Gretzky, Executive Director of Canada's National Men's Olympic Team. "As we prepare for Salt Lake City, Andy will provide us with valuable information on each country's goaltending which plays such a critical role in the outcome of any game. Let's face it, with shootouts being part of the game, it's vital that we know the tendancies of every goaltender." Moog is a goaltending consultant with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks and served in this same capacity in 2000-2001 with Canada's National Junior Team.

Meet the two young goalies who intend to lead the Houston Aeros' charge back to AHL supremacy. The play of rookie Josh Harding, 20, and 22-year-old Mike Smith is one of the main reasons the Houston Aeros got off to a 7-4-1-1 start in opening the 2004 AHL season. While the two young stars may seem interchangeable, there are plenty of subtle differences (and also some obvious ones) noticed by watching their games. For starters, Harding catches with his right hand, while Smith wears the mitt on the traditional left hand. Harding is 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, by no means small until he stands next to the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Smith. Harding is under contract with the Minnesota Wild, and Smith with the Dallas Stars.
