Dec. 29, 1939- Corporation executive; entrepreneur. "I enjoy building something good and having a successful product and making money," the entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga has said. The hero of a real-life Horatio Alger story, in his early twenties Huizenga worked as a garbage-truck driver. Striking out on his own, he started a one-man trash-collection operation that, within a decade, had grown into a highly profitable enterprise providing employment for several dozen people. In 1968, combining his business with three other companies, he created Waste Management, Inc., which, when he resigned as president and chief operating officer in 1984, having decided to retire, ranked as the largest trash haulage and disposal business in the world. Bored with inactivity, he began buying properties in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, his adopted hometown, and soon became a major player in the city's economy. Mess checks in Open to offers from all 30 teams BY JOHN DELLAPINA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Mark Messier is not ready to wave goodbye just yet. Mark Messier says a year and a half off skates has not resolved his uncertainty about whether he wants to play again. But he admits to thinking differently about one thing: The second-leading scorer in NHL history no longer is ruling out playing for anybody other than the Rangers. Reached last night at his Hilton Head, S.C., home, where he and girlfriend Kim Clark are awaiting the imminent birth of their second child, Messier said he would be open to calls from any of the league's 30 general managers once the free-agent signing period begins Aug. 1. "I'm probably at the stage now where I'm willing to listen to any offers," Messier said. Upon re-signing with the Rangers on July 13, 2000, Messier insisted he'd never again play for another team. He held to that stance even as he was playing the final games of the 2003-04 season, autographing sticks for teammates and taking a victory lap around the Garden in what was a just-in-case farewell. By the end of that season, however, Messier's ties to the Rangers - or, more specifically, GM Glen Sather - were loosening.

    Rangers retain Messier,
work on keeping Dvorak By JOHN DELLAPINA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Mark Messier Not only is Mark Messier coming back, he just might be staying a while. Last night, hours before players were scheduled to report to the club's training camp check-in hotel in Westchester, Messier and the Rangers put the finishing touches on a new contract that will keep The Captain in a Broadway Blueshirt this season and possibly longer. The deal, for one year at about $4 million with incentive clauses that could raise its value considerably, will enable Messier to travel with his teammates to Burlington, Vt., today in preparation for the first workouts of the preseason tomorrow morning. The contract also includes provisions that will enable Messier, through individual and team success, to earn a guaranteed second year. "The feeling as of right now is I would like to play two more years," said Messier, who turns 42 in January. "And if I indeed do play another year after this one, then obviously, I just think it's better if there's something in place where we don't have to negotiate. "And in order to trigger the last-year option on my behalf, I have to meet certain goals, which I think is fair."
