General Motors Place Events Vancouver joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1970. The club struggled in its first four seasons, placing no better than sixth in its division from 1970-71 to 1973-74. In the 1974-75 season, however, head coach Phil Maloney guided the Canucks to a division title. Outstanding players included goalie Gary Smith, left wing Andre Boudrias, defenseman Harold Snepsts, and right wings Bobby Schmautz and Dennis Ververgaert. The Canucks lost in the first round of the 1975 playoffs, and they again fell in the first round in 1976, 1979, 1980, and 1981. CLICK HERE TO FIND

Under head coach Roger Neilson, Vancouver advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 1982, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals despite posting a losing record during the regular season. Center Thomas Gradin led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year. In the postseason the Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Chicago Blackhawks to reach the finals. There they lost to the heavily favored New York Islanders, 4 games to 0. Related Links

Star players of this period included right wing Stan Smyl, center Patrik Sundstrom, right wing Tony Tanti, and center Trevor Linden. After 13 seasons in Vancouver—including eight years as team captain—Smyl retired in 1991 as the Canucks’ career leader in points, goals, assists, and games.

    Vancouver Canucks
    Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks were founded in 1970 by Thomas Scallen, Lyman Walters and partners as an NHL expansion franchise. But hockey had been part of Vancouver far earlier, with the Vancouver Millionaries of the Pacific Coast Hockey League winning the Stanley Cup in 1915. The team's first general manager was Norman "Bud" Poile and he selected former NHL defenseman Hal Laycoe to be the Canucks first coach. The Vancouver Canucks played their first game in the fall of 1970, losing 3-1 to the Los Angeles Kings. They would finish out of the playoffs in their inaugural season and struggled for the next couple of years. Their first taste of postseason play came in the 1975 playoffs when the Canucks took on the powerhouse Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens had owned the Canucks in the regular season and continued to roll through the playoffs, handing Vancouver a 4-1 defeat in the first round.
Changes continued in Vancouver as John McCaw purchased majority interest in the team, Pavel Bure was reunited with his junior teammate Alexander Mogilny, and the Canucks moved into a brand new facility - General Motors Place. The Canucks found themselves out of the Stanley Cup race early one, losing to the Avalanche in the first round. Pat Quinn continued to make changes as he brought in Tom Renney as coach; an experiement that would eventually fail. As the Canucks struggled on the ice

    Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.
