In the wide-open Northeast, teams, are happy peppering the net in the regular season, but too are often left asking themselves questions about the postseason TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS Simply put, Toronto is a good team. But Leafs fansnot to mention the tough Toronto mediaare tiring of playoff eliminations. Many cities would be happy with a team that advanced to the conference finals (1999) and the second round (2000) the past two yearsbut not Toronto. So the Leafs have added some muscle, hoping to strong-arm their way through the playoffs.

Once again NHL takes a hard hit
By Kevin Gleason
Times Herald-Record
kgleason@th-record.com

Casual hockey fans suddenly wanted to discuss hockey, which is never good news. It usually means somebody delivered a brutal cheap shot. It never means tepid fans have discovered the game's beauty. No exception this past week. Boston's Kyle McLaren authored the latest hatchet job, a dirty hit on Montreal's Richard Zednik in their playoff series. You have to hand it to the NHL: It certainly has a sense of timing – all bad. Last playoffs it was Tie Domi, one of those goons the league should have done something about years ago, assaulting Scott Niedermayer as the lights shone brightly. Now McLaren drops Zednik during one of the league's most exciting playoffs in recent years, top to bottom. "There are a lot of good stories going on,'' Army coach Rob Riley said.

Hockey player master of overcoming odds
By Deanna Cekanski Published: Friday, May 14, 2004 Eight concussions, flat-lining in her sleep and countless broken bones are just a few of the many situations a valiant Ohio State student has gone through - all in the name of hockey.
Erin Greeley, a sophomore in zoology and OSU club hockey player, is truly dedicated in all aspects of her life - especially hockey. She hails from Watertown, Mass., a city near Boston.
She started skating at age 3 and began playing hockey at summer camps by age 5. Her older brother, who passed away when she was 5 years old, introduced her to the world of sports.
"He got me into sports. That's why I'm athletic and I think I'm a boy," Greeley said.
Greeley's interest in sports started when her 3-year-old brother was body-slamming her in the crib. He had to experience the front row of a wrestling match with Hulk Hogan before he would believe it was staged. Both became obsessed with wrestling after that.

Sinden won't wait forever to turn season around
You know what they say in the dark room when all the images are speckled with dirt? Time to change the chemistry.
At 1-4-3 in their last eight going into tonight's game in Atlanta, the Bruins are turning out too many negatives for their fans' viewing displeasure.
The players seem clueless as to what's wrong, or at least they're not letting on.
Sample some quotes from post-game at Pittsburgh or this week's practice sessions and you'll hear "it's no one thing, it's something different every night," and "we have to get back to simple hockey, everybody has to play the system."
Then there are those who seem guarded against the surreal: "We have to stay within ourselves." And when the well of theories runs dry, there's always the cliché closet: "We have to bury our chances."
Well, here's another theory.
It is "no one thing" because several things are clearly identifiable as culprits in the Bruins' thus-far .500 season.
Byron Dafoe, Boston's MVP last season, held out until the end of October, didn't play until Nov. 6, and hadn't regained his 1998-99 form until this week.
In his absence, John Grahame was spectacular and Robbie Tallas very good, but while they were waiting for Dafoe, the Bruins played offense like Swiss cheese was tending goal.

After days of singin’ the blues, Boston’s teams prove they’re more than one-hit wonders
BY CHRISTOPHER YOUNG
After a three-day wasteland of local sports outcomes marked by unfathomable losses by the Bruins and Red Sox, the New England faithful got a hat trick of victories Thursday night that went a long way toward righting those teams’ respective ships and bodes well for upcoming days. The Red Sox had taken eight straight road games before dropping a 7-5 decision to the putrid Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, and even the most die-hard Sox fan had to admit the obvious: you can’t win ’em all. It was nonetheless a difficult acknowledgement, though, because when one compares the two teams’ contrasting payrolls and depths of talent, it is difficult to comprehend how the Red Sox — whose players one through nine all probably out-rate their Maryland counterparts — should ever lose to teams like the Orioles, Devil Rays, Royals, or Blue Jays. But that’s baseball, ain’t it ... So we put that Tuesday loss aside and blamed it on rotten starting pitching, focusing instead on the truly despicable loss incurred by the Bruins in Montreal. Rarely have I seen such anger expressed by Boston hockey fans as I did after the Bruins’ 4-3 giveaway to the Habs that night. It completely changed the way we looked at that team — at least temporarily — and hearkened back to that gruesome 1989 quarterfinal series when the heavily favored Bruins got swept by the mediocre Buffalo Sabres. But we’ll get back to the ice in a second.
