43. Top 10 Goons Of Hockey
In hockey, there are two types of bad boys. One is the cheap shot artist, randy mckay RW, New Jersey Devils. randy has one of the better work ethics

"Fighting isn't always the solution to getting even with somebody. Sometimes it can be a big check. I can throw a hit and knock the wind out of an opponent, which proves that fighting is not always the solution." -Tie Domi In hockey, there are two types of bad boys. One is the cheap shot artist, someone like Ulf Samuelsson, who enjoys using his stick to cause serious injury and turns turtle at the first sign of trouble. Of course, the cheap shot artists are not respected and this is the way things should be. The other is that rare type of man, a man who has the thankless task of keeping his zone free of the offending opponent, heating up a lackluster game, and defending the weak. These men will not ever win a Hart or a Selke trophy, because they lack the flash and polish of a Mario Lemieux or a Doug Gilmour. Yet they carry themselves with their own special grace as they glide off to the box that they call home. Yes gentle reader, these men are:
The Top 10 Goons of Hockey
1. Bob Probert- LW, Detroit Red Wings. "Probert, Probert, what a man; We see him, it's slam-bam. Let's go." -D. Cherry Amassing 292 penalty minutes over the course of 80 games last year, Probert took on all challengers and usually stood tall at the end. Probert can do more than fight, however, as he was the highest scorer among goons, scoring 43 points from his spot at left wing. 2. Marty McSorley- D, Pittsburgh Penguins. Although Probert is the better fighter, Marty has protected the biggest names in hockey (Wayne Gretzky last year, and Mario Lemieux this year) and led the league in penalty minutes last year with 399. Add to these achievements a 41 point season, and it is no wonder that the Penguins were willing to pay him over $1 million a season.

Give the Devils Their Due

How New Jersey can save the NHL.
By Ben McGrath
Posted Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at 12:00 AM PT
The NHL's chief concern at the start of this season, as always, is boosting hockey's perennially low TV ratings, which currently hover just above those of the WNBA and the now-defunct XFL. The problem is compounded by the leaguewide decline in offense over the last decade. Chief among the culprits, according to most journalists, are the New Jersey Devils, peddlers of dullness on ice. This month's Maxim magazine features a panel of "experts" addressing hockey's ills and, sure enough, New Jersey is high on the list. Comedian Dennis Leary put it bluntly: "The Devils—God love 'em, God love their fans, but I hate that fucking team. I hate the way they play. It's boring, frustrating hockey." But the Devils aren't what's wrong with hockey at all. In fact, they may be the team best suited to curing the sport's image woes. The way the Devils play, in Leary's and most others' eyes, is plodding and entirely defensive, stifling and without flair. The team is deplorable, in other words, on grounds both of results (the games are low-scoring) and style (they're a "faceless, starless Devil monolith"). This is a reputation the team earned when it first won the Stanley Cup in 1995 under Jacques Lemaire, by playing the neutral-zone trap, a kind of zone defense designed to jam the opposition up at center ice and keep them from mounting an attack. A year later, the

Writing to players and asking them to sign a card or two has become an effective means for obtaining hockey autographs. What follows is a listing of players that sign through the mail, things to keep in mind when writing to players, potential problems that may be encountered, and my personal insider tips to "assist" your hockey autograph success via the mail. Tampa forward Ben Clymer posed with the Stanley Cup and his two biggest fans. The Stanley Cup was being flown from Montreal to Minneapolis the evening of Tuesday, August 10. Tampa's Ben Clymer was next in line to spend his day with the Cup. Who should be on that same flight but Randy McKay, who was a member of the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils in 1995 and 2000. McKay was excited to be on the same flight as hockey's Holy Grail, and talked excitedly about his new position with Michigan Tech's hockey program in Houghton, Michigan. Ben then took the Cup to The Independent, a bar fiercely proud of the fact it is locally-owned and not the franchised outlet of a corporate entity. With Betty Page-style cheesecake paintings decorating the walls, Clymer and his guests discovered (over and over again!) that sixteen beers will fill the Stanley Cup's bowl to the brim. Ben left with the Cup for his home at 3:30 that morning. Ben Clymer happily signed autographs and posed for photos with the Stanley Cup at the Bloomington Ice Garden. Wednesday morning started early with a trip to the Calhoun Beach Club; the gym where Ben Clymer works out with other hockey players like former NHLer Shjon Podein. Then, Ben surprised the patrons at Caribou Coffee with a spontaneous visit. Whether it was the caffeine or the excitement of the Stanley Cup's presence, I'm not certain, but people sure were buzzing that morning! Clymer then spent three hours at the Bloomington Ice Garden where the Stanley Cup was publicly displayed for fans to view and get a photograph plus an autograph from Ben.

(September 24, 2003) Mike Rupp and Brian Rafalski took the Stanley Cup to the Newark Beth Israel Hospital, where they visited a number of children, including little Ryan, all decked out in the colours of his favourite hockey team. Later that afternoon, Brian Rafalski and Mike Rupp took the Stanley Cup to visit the children at the Newark Beth Israel Hospital, stopping at each room to say hi. The kids were so excited to meet hockey players and to see the Stanley Cup, and as ambassadors, Rupp and Rafalski were superb, chatting and answering questions and leaving each child not only with wonderful memories but also with a plastic Devils' mug or a hockey ball. Tuesday, September 9, the New Jersey Devils held their fifth annual alumni golf tournament at the Ballyowen Golf Course in Hardyston, New Jersey. The course is majestic, laid out on 250 acres of incredible terrain nestled into the Appalachian Mountains and is one of the best golf courses in the state. Each foursome consisted of three guests and a Devil. Several from the Stanley Cup-winning roster came out to play, and were joined by special assignment coach Larry Robinson and alumni including Aaron Broten, Tom Chorske, Bruce Driver, Randy McKay, Kirk Muller and Chico Resch. Proceeds from the tournament went to the Children's Miracle Network in the New York/New Jersey area. The fifth annual New Jersey Devils' Alumni golf tournament took place at the Ballyowen Golf Course. Larry Robinson was one of many prominent players, past and present, who teed up to help raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.
