Army National Guard Staff Sergeant and Boston Police officer, Andrew Fay will return to Iraq about the same time his fellow soldiers will receive a few special gifts from home.
While stationed in Baghdad, Fay and some of his fellow soldiers created a street hockey league using whatever equipment they could find, including broken sticks and goalie pads made from mattresses and cardboard. After receiving word that the league was in desperate need of new equipment, the City of Boston jumped at the chance. Read more...

History
Founded in 1947, the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) began choosing men's All-America hockey teams in 1958. The term "All-America" is actually a bit misleading, because two teams are chosen, one from the east and one from the west. Several times, one of the teams has had a player or two more than the other. The AHCA began choosing women's All-America teams in 2000. The women's teams are not regionally divided. Top of Page

Ottawa Senators THE OTTAWA UNDERACHIEVERS went a strange route to get a spark from the coaching staff when they hired Bryan Murray, whose history as a bench boss never has included real success in the playoffs. Clearly, it was time to part with Jacques Martin, who had taken this talent-laden squad as far as he could. The disappointing first-round ouster by Toronto this year emphasized the need for a change. "I think we made an excellent choice and found the right fit for this team," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said.

Thursday - September 15, 2005 Training Camp - Day #2 So far, coach Tom Renney has kept the training camp practices intense and high tempo. With all of the young players competing for spots, it would make sense that they push it to the limit to try and impress the staff. The guys over at Blueshirt Bulletin continue to have some of the best training camp coverage. So far it seems that many of the younger players look like they have a chance, at least, to play at the NHL level. Larry Brooks writes that Renney promised that the team would not make the "Manny Malholtra" mistake with this crop of youngsters. Larry also reports that Blair Betts is getting the first crack as the starting fourth line center. One disturbing thing Larry reports is that the referees at camp are letting everything go in scrimmages. Renney said that they would crack down today, and in my opinion it couldn't happen fast enough. The very last thing the Rangers need is a parade to the penalty box when the season starts. The new head of officiating , Stephen Walkom, promised that the rules would be strictly enforced.

No monkeying around
Issue now moot: Bruins notch their first victory at home
By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 11/9/2003 After the morning skate, goalie Andrew Raycroft likened the Bruins' winless streak at home to something resembling the 500-pound gorilla in the kitchen that no one talks about. ADVERTISEMENT That subject is now closed. The Bruins finally have a home victory, thanks to a 4-1 decision over the Dallas Stars last night at the FleetCenter that gave them a 1-1-2-1 mark here. Raycroft, who was the principal reason Boston shut out the Stars in Dallas Oct. 15, came up big again in this one with 27 saves, improving his record to 4-2-1. When asked about the gorilla's disappearance, Raycroft smiled. "It's real comforting," he said. "We're not going to get asked that question anymore and that's nice. We weren't too worried about it in here but, obviously, it's a little something that's off your back and off your mind."

With fresh start, McGillis fitting in nicely
By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 11/10/2003 When the Bruins acquired Dan McGillis and Ian Moran at the trade deadline in March, the team was desperate for defensive help. Neither player had much time to fit into the system Boston was using after coach Robbie Ftorek was fired and general manager Mike O'Connell took over behind the bench. ADVERTISEMENT Not long after, the season ended with the Bruins losing in the first round of the playoffs to eventual-champion New Jersey. McGillis and Moran were looking forward to a fresh start at training camp and they got it under new coach Mike Sullivan. Through 14 games, including the club's first home victory Saturday night against Dallas, both have been key contributors. McGillis had a particularly strong game against the Stars, playing a team-high 21 minutes 14 seconds over 23 shifts, and finished with a game-high plus-3 ranking. He was credited with one assist on Michal Grosek's tying goal in the first period, but was instrumental in Boston's backbreaking third goal. McGillis swept the puck away from Dallas defenseman Sergei Zubov at the Boston blue line and triggered a three-on-one break that resulted in a score by Sergei Samsonov.
