Not only is he the Right Wing of the Detroit Wings #25, he's the lead singer of the band Grinder who has just released a new CD, called Gotta Keep Movin . Did I mention Darren is also the Co-Manager of a recently signed band, "Troubleman", and the founder of the McCarty Cancer Foundation, a charitable organziation to help find a cure for Mulitple Myeloma and participates in the Make a Wish Foundation? [Editor note: She did say he was busy!] Here's how it went: GRINDER IS: Darren McCarty : Lead Vocals Billy Reedy : Lead Guitar, Vocals Eli Ruhf : Rhythm Guitar Bill Kozy : Rhythm Guitar James Anders : Bass, Vocals Eric Miller : Drums Percussion Eva: When was Grinder formed and how did you manage to get such a group of talented musicians? Darren: After we won our first Stanley Cup in '97, Vladamir Konstantinov, Slava Fetisov, and our trainer, Sergei Mnatsakanov were injured in a limousine accident. It was John Morton, our trainer's idea for me to form a band and do a song for the local tribute album to raise funds for the injured Red Wings. So I got with Billy Reedy, John's friend, Eric and James and Bill. We recorded a single, "Step Outside" for the tribute album. That summer after we won the cup, we played a few shows. In '98 we played a few gigs. We did it on and off for the next few years. It wasn't until after we won the Cup in '01 that we decided to make this a full-fledged band effort. We can only play in the summertime, but they're a great bunch of musicians. It's a lot of fun.

Darren McCarty, whose hard-working, physical style of play made him a favorite in Hockeytown, on Monday took one step closer to leaving Detroit. The 33-year-old forward was waived by the Red Wings along with Derian Hatcher and Ray Whitney. If the trio go unclaimed as expected, the Red Wings have the option of buying out their contracts and making them unrestricted free agents. In other words, the 11-season relationship between McCarty and the Wings has effectively ended. "It's obviously disappointing because this is the only place I ever played," McCarty said during an interview on WDFN-AM in Detroit. "I'll always be a Red Wing at heart, and it'll always be home. If the three players go unclaimed, the Red Wings have the option of buying out their contracts and making them unrestricted free agents. "They've been a big, big part of our franchise," Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said. "This is just a part of doing business right now with the new CBA." The NHL's new collective bargaining agreement features a $39 million salary cap, and teams were granted a six-day window on Saturday to shed cumbersome contracts. For the upcoming season, Hatcher's contract calls for a salary of $4.94 million, McCarty $1.71 million and Whitney $2.66 million.
