Shooting for Three: IHL preview
Chicago Wolves begin quest to win third Turner Cup

Ross F. Dettman/Chicago Wolves Wolves' Captain Steve Maltais vs. Grand Rapids during last years finals. Hockey’s “other” holy grail—the International League’s Turner Cup—is up for grabs once more, as the playoffs are now underway. Last season, the Chicago Wolves won the Turner Cup, beating the Grand Rapids Griffins in six games. But can they win it again?
The Wolves were off to a rocky start at the beginning of this season, posting a 15-21-3 record—the second worst overall record at that time. But after the All-Star game, where the Wolves beat the IHL All-Stars 4-0, things turned around for them. Since the break, the Wolves posted a 28-11-4 record, which was the best of all the IHL teams during the second half of the season.
Although the Wolves finished fifth overall, they were first in the Western Conference and will have home-ice advantage against their opponents in the first round. The Eastern Conference looks like it will be dominated by the Grand Rapids Griffins, who were the best team in the IHL this year. The Turner Cup finals could very well end up being a rematch of last year—another Chicago-Grand Rapids series. Should these teams meet in the finals this year, the Wolves will be hard pressed; the Griffins did well against the Wolves this season, winning six times and losing twice. Also, the Wolves will not have home-ice advantage should they make it to the finals.

  • EXHIBITION OPENER: Wings vs. Pittsburgh at Cleveland, 8 p.m. Saturday (no TV or radio).
  • EXHIBITION HOME OPENER: Wings vs. Pittsburgh at Joe Louis Arena, 7 p.m. Sunday (TV: Fox Sports Detroit). If he does, he would play five more seasons. Within 12 months, Yzerman will meet with general manager Ken Holland to discuss how to finish his career in Detroit. Negotiations on a three-year contract extension likely will begin by next summer. Yzerman has two years remaining on his current deal worth about $5 million a season. "Twenty seasons would be a good number, and hopefully I can reach that, and it's going to be five more effective years," said Yzerman, 33. "If they're not effective years, then it won't be 20 years. For now, that's what I'd like to set my sights on. "I've been very fortunate that it's worked out this well in Detroit and our team has been very strong the last couple of years. Hopefully, we'll continue to do that, and I'll be here until I retire."

    What a Weekend
How topsy turvy can a weekend be with a team that's supposed to be one of the best in the league? You'd think that there'd be more consistency than this, and granted, its only one weekend. Its only 3 games. But still After witnessing the win at home, you think the kids would be on a good upswing. A nice OT winner like that usually carries over. And it certainly seemed to carry over into Cleveland, where we socked away 6 goals. Fans all over the internet and radio land were breaking out the bubbly. But then they went to Chicago. I personally had a concert to go to that night, listened to the first period at home ... sure we were down, but it wasn't a lost cause. I caught the second period on the way out. We scored ... it was a one goal game. When I turned the radio off, Chicago had just scored to make it 3-1. I reluctantly left it at that since I knew the outcome didn't depend on me being in the truck listening to the game. But when I got home to see a 6-1 boxscore, I'm sure I taught my neighbors a few new curse words at 2AM. Of course, the truly irritating thing about all this is that it came at the hands of those despised Wolved. And it happened with that waste of a goalie, Norm Maracle in the net. Now to be sure, Norm seems to have shaped up a little this season, so more power to him. Likewise, Chicago knows how to keep the game going in front of Normy, as the Aeros only got off something like 24 shots on goal. It just sucks losing to those lazy bastards, and there's no two ways about it. They didn't even have Rob Brown on the ice to agitate them. What a load of hooey. I want the scalps of every freakin Wolves player ... even the transplanted one that Rob Brown wears. I just know we're going to have to go through them in the playoffs YET again and I'll be darned if we come up losing again.

Carlton Fisk's home run ball that won Game 6 of the 1975 World Series for the Boston Red Sox sold for $113,273 at Leland's auction of sports memorabilia in New York. The 12th-inning homer, one of the most dramatic in Series history, is remembered for Fisk waving his arms frantically at the ball, as if trying to keep it in fair territory as it sailed toward the wall in Fenway Park. Fisk's home run ball hit the foul pole and was retrieved by Cincinnati left fielder George Foster, who has had it since that game. The identity of the purchaser was not released. ... Cal Ripken's $6.3 million option for the 2000 season was exercised by the Baltimore Orioles yesterday.

The Winter of Our Discontent Hello, Canada, and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland. Above and Beyond Hockey is back for a fifth season. And right off the top, the big question would be "why." Oh, not in the sense that our detractors and critics have long asked that question, but in a whole new way that only we can ask, and can ask only ourselves. Something happened last spring, or several things we're not entirely sure. Part of it might simply be the accumulation of almost 20 years of banging our heads against a brick wall, trying to promote the game's history and a more intelligent approach to its analysis, trying to combat the game's mismanagement and misfeasance, all with little result or recognition. Part of it has to do with the retirement of half of the writing team that sparked this site. He says that after 18 years of covering the game for newspapers and magazines and co-authoring five books on hockey, he's written out on the subject. He's said all he has to say. Maybe all there is Above and Beyond ? Well, there's our love of tradition four and a half years on-line is an eternity for a hockey website, and we'd hate to see that just fade away. And in spite of our often cranky tone, there's an uncrushable optimism that hockey will provide some new event or some fresh remark so marvellous or so hideous that we'll once again be galvanized into ecstasy or outrage and hyperverbal action. And then there's this: director Marcel Ophuls said that he made films not for an audience of millions but for fifty friends. We dig. For the staff here at
