"Fighting isn't always the solution to getting even with somebody. Sometimes it can be a big check. I can throw a hit and knock the wind out of an opponent, which proves that fighting is not always the solution." -Tie Domi In hockey, there are two types of bad boys. One is the cheap shot artist, someone like Ulf Samuelsson, who enjoys using his stick to cause serious injury and turns turtle at the first sign of trouble. Of course, the cheap shot artists are not respected and this is the way things should be. The other is that rare type of man, a man who has the thankless task of keeping his zone free of the offending opponent, heating up a lackluster game, and defending the weak. These men will not ever win a Hart or a Selke trophy, because they lack the flash and polish of a Mario Lemieux or a Doug Gilmour. Yet they carry themselves with their own special grace as they glide off to the box that they call home. Yes gentle reader, these men are:
The Top 10 Goons of Hockey
1. Bob Probert- LW, Detroit Red Wings. "Probert, Probert, what a man; We see him, it's slam-bam. Let's go." -D. Cherry Amassing 292 penalty minutes over the course of 80 games last year, Probert took on all challengers and usually stood tall at the end. Probert can do more than fight, however, as he was the highest scorer among goons, scoring 43 points from his spot at left wing. 2. Marty McSorley- D, Pittsburgh Penguins. Although Probert is the better fighter, Marty has protected the biggest names in hockey (Wayne Gretzky last year, and Mario Lemieux this year) and led the league in penalty minutes last year with 399. Add to these achievements a 41 point season, and it is no wonder that the Penguins were willing to pay him over $1 million a season.

Dec 30 '00
I took a date to a Kings/Panthers game during the last season (sob, sob) at the Fabulous Forum. I dazzled her with my knowledge of the game. Actually, I dazzled myself. I never thought of myself as knowledgeable about the game of hockey, but after years of watching it played at different levels in person and on TV, I seem to have picked something up about how it works.
Blatant Genderism Alert: I am a heterosexual male. I am about to make generalizations about males and females. Of course, there is no such thing as an average man or an average woman just as, to quote Robert Anton Wilson, there is no such thing as "An average Beethoven Symphony." So, I am really talking about the women I have known and have been attracted enough to take them to hockey games. My experiences may ring true and apply to other guys dating other women, I don't know.
First, let me say that hockey is the best sport to take a date to if you are a guy (with the possible exception of the trackwe all know about gals and horses. Also, If you are female, pick your sport. Your man will be overjoyed no matter what). I've attended all the major team sports with women and, for whatever reason, chicks dig hockey. Is it the ice rink, the grace of the skaters? Perhaps the fighting and unbridled machismo? I don't know, but the woman I dated most of my college years was always up to go see the minor league Columbus Chill hockey team even though she couldn't be troubled to see the nationally ranked Ohio State Buckeyes football or basketball teams.

Like it or not, fighting is part of the game of hockey. Though there are those who want to eliminate it, not only does it allow players to protect their own but the fans go crazy when the gloves are dropped. This page will track the Flyers' performances in fights throughout the season. The fight decisions are judged by whoever writes the game review in which a bout takes place. Naturally, this is completely subjective so these statistics must be considered opinion rather than fact. There are certain to be results with which you might disagree, and that's fine. Feel free to discuss on the message board The scoring system is as follows: Win (W): The Flyer clearly has the advantage in the fight, landing more good punches and earning the decision. Loss (L): The opponent unquestionably lands the better blows and gets the victory. Draw (D): Either the fight is dead even or one of the combatants has a slight edge. Neither player has a decided advantage. This category also includes fights which end quickly due to one or both players falling to the ice before any significant punches are landed. The scar starts just under Eric Lindros' chin and takes a twisting course halfway up the underside of his right jaw. When he shaves you hardly notice it, but Lindros shaves only two or three times a week, and with a few days' growth, lik e today, the scar is stark, startling, as much a feature of his famous face as those thick eyebrows over pale brown eyes, the small, serious lips, and the lines that cup his cleft chin and reach almost up to his cheekbones, accentuating those strong, squa re jaws. Most people who stand close to Lindros see the scar first because he's 6-foot-5. "Where'd you get it?" "Junior hockey." "How old were you?" "Eighteen." "How many stitches was it?" "Forty-two. Twenty-six outside, 26 inside. No, wait, sorry. That's 52, isn't it? It was 52." "How did it happen?"

    Hockey Goon - Introduction
Toughness and grit are long sought after traits in professional hockey players. But there is a line in the sand where these sought after characteristics and goonery. Fighting is a controversial though common aspect of ice hockey. The game is well known for its own form of on-ice vigilante justice and the men who enforce the law - the Hockey Goons . Also known as enforcers, toughguys, pugilists and fighters, these players often play the game for their one on one matchups rather than the usual hockey strategies.
The hockey enforcers are typically players of less than star capabilities who generally play on the third or fourth line and see very limited ice team. They often act as protection for star players and typically face off against the opposing team's enforcers.
Over the history of the hockey, thousands of players have made the National Hockey League on the basis of their toughness. They have performed at various levels and some have been more effective as others. This website looks back at some of these great hockey goons and uses basic statistics to create a list of the best tough guys.
    Behind the numbers
The basis of this statistical analysis is to evaluate the fighters at what they do best - fight and take penalties. So we started off by penalizing these players for what is not their core competency - goals and assists. The formula we came up with is as follows:
