Hockey's Future
Why Not Team Quebec?
by Howard Fienberg
January 18, 2002 In days of yore, when National Hockey League players were all Canadian anyhow, a good portion of them were frogs. Times change. The only frogs headed to Salt Lake at the moment are Mario Lemieux, Simon Gagne, Eric Desjardins and Martin Brodeur. Presuming that those four would be unavailable to Team Quebec, who else would be? Few superstars, once the goaltender position is filled. If this synopsis causes Quebecois to fear that they are losing their grip on the sport... what can I say, it is true. This Quebec squad would have trouble beating any of the big six teams. They might even struggle against the preliminary round elimination teams, like Germany and Slovakia. Ah, well. Some sacrifices must be made at the foot of the nationalist altar, eh? - Howard Fienberg is a columnist for LCS Hockey return to Howard's published works ... or Howard's main page

The Shoot For A Cure Hockey campaign has been extremely successful in raising awareness about spinal cord injuries in hockey through the Play It Cool program. It has also raised a significant amount of funds for spinal cord injury research. This success could not have been possible without the support of the hockey community, and the following players, in particular: Brad May
Chairman "Hockey is such a fast game that I think we sometimes forget how easily a spinal cord injury could occur in our game. That's why it's so easy for all of us to get involved with Shoot For A Cure."
Brian Savage
Vice Chairman "Being part of SFAC is something I would have wanted to be part of regardless of what happened. But I know I can appreciate their message a lot more after what I went through." Jarome Iginla
Spokesperson
"We know that it's a great program; that we would love to see a cure for spinal cord injury and as a hockey player, we know things can change any day not just a hockey player, but for anybody, things can change any day and how fortunate we are to be playing this game. I think it's a great program."

30 Fun Facts About Canada
* Canada was originally populated by peoples loyal to Britain and dumb people who just got lost. * Canada is still technically owned by England and has to dance for them when commanded. * That happens usually three times a year. * The border between U.S. and Canada is the longest unprotected border in the world. There are plans to mine it, set up video cameras all along it, and not tell Canada for a new Fox special called When Americans Are B@stards. * It is rumored Canada has its own military. Their most powerful weapon is the telephone with which they can call America and say, "Help! We're being invaded, eh!" * Canadians are almost as genetically similar to humans as the chimpanzee.

*On what would have been an NHL All-star weekend, we remember Black contributions in the sport of professional hockey. A historical overview of Black players in hockey is very interesting.
The National Hockey League (NHL) did not integrate until 1958, but it claims that it never had any restrictions. The NHL points to the involvement of Black athletes in many levels of organized amateur and professional hockey since the past century. Until the 1970s Hockey players were taken largely from Canada, a country’s whose Black population was very small. The NHL, strongly rooted in Canada, claims that it shared the Canadian tradition of open-mindedness on matters of race and if there ever were Black hockey players good enough to play in the NHL, they would get their chance.
Canada's entire Black population in the 1950s was just over one-tenth of one percent of the national total. There were only 120 NHL jobs and if all players were Canadian, the entire Black population of Canada would have been a single candidate along with four other contenders for one statistical position. In the mid 1960s, the six-team NHL had only one non-Canadian (Boston Bruin Tommy Williams from Duluth, Minnesota.) The background of NHL players has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, not necessarily helping the chances of Black athletes due to the influx of players from American colleges, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and other European countries. The United States has had a historically larger Black community and these have not been hockey breeding grounds.

That's Entertainment!
"That was like the 1980s or something. That was different," says Oilers' forward Ryan Smyth, smiling.
"Great entertainment," declares coach Craig MacTavish.
"Everybody leaves the building happy," adds Georges Laraque. Hockey fans in Edmonton did indeed go home happy last night. They watched the Oilers give Atlanta a 5-1 whacking, and those who stuck around for the final minutes were brought to their feet by a " wild melee ." (Even the language of hockey brawls sounds old-fashioned.) Before it was over, Edmonton's Mike Bishai was throwing punches from the Atlanta bench and the goalies were trading haymakers at center ice. "I just think they got frustrated," suggests Laraque of the Thrashers, who are winless in ten games.

"A Super Bowl-like Atmosphere"
The entire hockey world is talking about Saturday's "Heritage Classic" in Edmonton. The Oilers and Montreal Canadiens will play the first outdoor game in NHL history tomorrow night, with 56,000 fans cheering them on in freezing temperatures. The event has electrified the city of Edmonton and much of Canada. Today, Mark Messier joined his old Oiler teammates to prepare for the "Mega-Stars" gathering that precedes the NHL game. Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and other members of the Edmonton dynasty of the 1980s will take on the Montreal Canadiens' alumni on Saturday afternoon. Messier will be the only active NHL player in either lineup. New York Rangers' coach and GM Glen Sather, who will coach the Edmonton old-timers, gave Messier the go-ahead to play last night. "It's a good way for me to say thanks to a lot of people in Edmonton,"

HOCKEY NOTES Ducks rookie still sidelined by October fight
Monday, December 14, 1998
BY DAVE HELLER
Enquirer contributor

Rarely do a player's season statistics sum up his year more than Tony Mohagen's do. The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks rookie forward has played in just one game, compiling five penalty minutes. Mohagen has been sidelined since suffering a concussion on Oct. 16 at Hamilton. On one of his first shifts as a pro, Mohagen got into a fight with Hamilton's Georges Laraque. During the fracas, Mohagen's helmet came off. The two combatants then fell to the ground, with Mohagen's head bouncing hard off the ice. "Even my neck was a little sore, I hit my head that hard. It was a pretty good blow, I guess," said Mohagen, who can't fully remember the fight. "I have brief memory loss about the incident. Things you knew before you're a little unsure about, (but) there's no past memory loss."
