84. Lengths Of Hockey Players' Careers Through The Ages
This does penalise people like newsy lalonde and Lester Patrick, whose careers Once again, the demand for hockey players now far exceeds the supply,
http://www.sentex.net/~ajy/hockey/longcareer.html
Hockey Players' Career Lengths
Watching the 2001-02 Stanley Cup finals, I found myself somewhat surprised at how long some of the participants have played for. Ron Francis has been in the NHL since 1981-82 (in his rookie season, he was a teammate of Dave Keon), Chris Chelios and Steve Yzerman have been playing since 1983-84, and several others have been NHL regulars since the mid-1980's. Also, several other players (such as Igor Larionov) had logged several years in Europe's elite leagues before joining the NHL. This seems rather unusual to someone like me, who first learned about hockey in the 1980's. While it is nice, in a way, to see these players continue playing, it strikes me that, not all that long ago, people's careers weren't that long. In the 1980's, after Keon retired, I don't recall a lot of ancient players in the NHL. People like Gilbert Perrault, Guy Lafleur and Larry Robinson were very much an exception. Nowadays, Detroit has several ancients, and there are others scattered throughout the league. This raises two questions: First, is my perception correct, or am I just imagining that things were different in the 1980's than they are now, and second, why? In an attempt to answer these questions, I'm going to look at one aspect of the big picture. Specifically, I'm going to look at every year during which major-league professional hockey was played (In this exercise, I use a definition of "major league" similar to that used by Klein and Reif in

Frederick George Bourdginon, who's name was interpreted as "Bergdinon" in NHL circles, was born in Parry Sound, Ontario, on June 22nd, 1906. The only child from his father's third marriage, Fred was raised as such, given that his half-siblings were much older than he was and had already left the family home to make their own lives.
Described as a handsome young man and a good athlete, Fred was popular in his small hometown. His father was very proud of him, and encouraged him to play hockey, which was often seen as a waste of time and not a viable career in the 1920s. He also bought Fred one of the first automobiles in town.
Fred began to play organized hockey in high school and later played for Parry Sound's junior OHA team. At some point around 1924, he is believed to have signed a professional contract and joined an unknown team in Minnesota. From there, he was likely discovered by a scout, which landed him with the Boston Bruins of the NHL.

Team Effort Gives Hockey A 5-2 Win Over Ferris State Sophomore Kyle Dolder gets first career goal for third period game-winner. Nov. 9, 2001 Box Score Notre Dame, Ind. - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got contributions from just about everyone in their 5-2 home win over the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday night at the Joyce Center. They even had a pair of sophomores who played sparingly a year ago, score their first career goals in key situations to help the Irish to their first home win of the season. After Connor Dunlop for Notre Dame and Chris Kunitz for Ferris State traded goals to make the score 1-1, Notre Dame's unsung heroes took over. Sophomore defenseman T.J. Mathieson and freshman center Alex Lalonde never quit on what many thought should have been icing on the Irish and instead turned it into a Notre Dame goal. Lalonde beat the Ferris State defense to the puck behind their net and hit Mathieson in stride inside the blue line. Mathieson put his head down and buried the puck behind Bulldog goaltender Mike Brown at 14:19 of the second period to give the Irish a 2-1 lead.

ROAD TRIP: Notre Dame's hockey team takes to the road for the second consecutive weekend for games three and four of six straight road contests. This weekend, the Irish will head east to Boston for single games versus two HOCKEY EAST opponents, Boston College and Northeastern. The Irish will face Boston College, the defending national champions, on Friday, Oct. 26 at Kelley Rink in a 7:05 p.m. (6:05 p.m. South Bend time) start. The following night, Notre Dame travels across town for a meeting with the Northeastern Huskies at Matthews Arena with a 7:05 face-off time (6:05 p.m. in South Bend). Notre Dame started its six-game road sojourn last weekend at Ohio State. The Irish came-from-behind to tie the Buckeyes on Saturday 4-4 but dropped Sunday's game by a 3-2 margin. Boston College lost two league games to UMass-Lowell (7-2) and Northeastern (4-3). The Boston College game was Northeastern's only game of the week. THE BOSTON COLLEGE SERIES: The Irish and Eagles have tangled 21 times with Boston College holding a 13-7-1 mark in the all-time series. At Chestnut Hill, the Irish are 6-6-1. The two teams met twice last year. The first meeting came on Oct. 13 in the opening game of the Maverick Stampede in Omaha, Neb., where the Eagles prevailed, 4-1. On Nov. 10, Boston College visited the Joyce Center and skated away with a 5-3 victory. Notre Dame is 0-5-1 in the last six meetings with the lone tie (5-5) coming in Notre Dame's last visit to the Kelley Rink on Nov. 5, 1998.

http://www.oilersheritage.com/history/early_teams_professional_hockey.html
Professional Hoc. Professional Hockey Today, fans of both Alberta National Hockey League teams, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames, worry about the economics of the game. Their concerns stem from the fact that because 24 of the League's 30 teams are based in America, the powerful U.S. dollar forces the Alberta teams to deal with budgets that are often beyond their means. They worry that the free-spending American teams will continue to inflate player salaries and the smaller market teams to the North will no longer be able to compete. While those worries are indeed valid, they have nothing on the economic challenges faced by the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Tigers—Alberta's first two official professional teams. When they both joined the fledgling Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) in 1921, the economics of hockey were even more skewed than they are today. At that time, hockey players in Canada were paid more, on average, than American baseball pros or European soccer players. Some players were rumoured to have received signing bonuses in the tens of thousands of dollars, which, pro-rated for the economy of the 1920s, was major money.

http://www.oilersheritage.com/history/early_leagues_WCHL.html
WCHL The WCHL—Pros On The Prairies After the First World War, the National Hockey League had begun to outstrip the Pacific Coast Hockey League as the more important pro league in the country. And while the PCHL had initiated many exciting rule changes, such as the introduction of changing on the fly and the penalty shot, it refused to modernize the game in the same way the NHL had. The PCHL still held onto the notion of hockey as a seven-a-side game, with three forwards, a defenceman, a goaltender and a rover. That led to a clogged ice surface that restricted scoring chances. If pro hockey was to flourish in Western Canada, more pro teams were needed on the Prairies. In 1921, four new pro clubs, the Edmonton Eskimos , Calgary Tigers, Regina Capitals and Saskatoon Shieks formed the new Western Canada Hockey League. Surprisingly, the new league chose to stick with the antiquated Western rules and keep the rovers. It was agreed that the winner of the WCHL title would play the PCHL champion for the right to represent the West in the Stanley Cup final against the NHL champion from the East.
