NATIONAL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (1909-10 to 1916-17) The Strachans, of Montreal and the O'Briens and Barnetts of Renfrew, well established and successful in business enterprises were not to be easily denied. A meeting of the Montreal Wanderers and Renfrew was called for December 2, 1909, in Montreal. Franchises were granted to Renfrew, Haileybury, Cobalt and the Montreal Wanderers. The league was launched forth under the name of the National Hockey Association. The teams bound themselves to stick together for three years and post a thousand dollar guarantee from each team to make the agreement binding. The bitter rivalry between the CHA and the NHA was on !! Peace overtures of a kind were made but lead to nowhere. Proposals to include the Wanderers and Renfrew in the CHA fell flat, these teams refusing to desert the National Hockey Association without taking Haileybury and Cobalt. Between the meetings of December 4, 1909 and the opening games in the rival leagues, a player war of gigantic proportions with salary figures, skyrocketing to unheard of levels, developed. The hockey world was startled in mid-December by the announcement that Renfrew had signed Lester and Frank Patrick , each at salary of $3,000 to take part in an eight game schedule. The Patricks, at the time, engaged in the lumbering operations with their father at Nelson, B.C. Another significant signing, at a cost to Ottawa of the CHA, was losing their star defenceman Fred "Cyclone" Taylor to Renfrew.

Redemption Cards 2002-2003 In The Game-Used One of the most exciting new brands of the 2002-03 hockey card season, In The Game-Used hits hobby store shelves in mid-March. As the name suggests, In the Game-Used is loaded with an impressive array of memorabilia cards collectors have come to expect from In The Game, but this time, there is one in every pack. Not only does In the Game-Used sport one memorabilia card per pack, but the base set is extremely collectible as well. The 200-card base set has two unique designs which are printed on different foil stocks. The first 100 cards are printed on Dufex foil while the next 100 cards are printed on Shimmerboard foil. The Dufex cards are numbered 1-100. The first 80 feature top NHL veterans and are limited to fewer than 250 copies, while card numbers 81-100 are rookie cards serial-numbered to 100. All Dufex cards depict the players in their home jerseys. The Shimmerboard cards are numbered 101-200. Cards 101-180 feature the same 80 NHL veterans as found in the Dufex version. Card numbers 181-200 are also rookie cards serial-numbered to 100. All Shimmerboard cards depict the players in their away jerseys. These Rookies are unique from the rookies on cards 81-100 making for a total of 40 rookie cards altogether. Key rookies such as Rick Nash, Henrik Zetterberg, Jason Spezza and Ryan Miller are all in the rookie subset, but you'll also find late call-ups like Ottawa's Ray Emery and New Jersey's Ari Ahonen.

Harold Joseph 'Bullet Joe' started his career in the Canadian west. He was born in Selkirk Manitoba on August 13, 1893. He learned the sport of hockey on a frozen slough, just down from his house, during the early 1900's. As Bullet Joe once stated Manitoba Avenue ran east and west in the middle of Selkirk. The boys living in the north end were the northern team and those south of Manitoba Avenue made up the southern team.
After graduating from the Selkirk Fishermen Juniors, Simpson played senior hockey with the Winnipeg Victoria's of the NHA in 1914-15.
Prior to enlisting in the Canadian Army for WW1 he captained the 1916 Allan Cup Champions 61st Battalion Team of Winnipeg.
During the war he served with the 43rd. Cameron-Highlanders and his unit held part of the British front along side a battalion commanded by Major Winston Churchill.
Bullet Joe was wounded twice during the war, once at the Somme, and once at Amiens. He received the military medal of valor.

In the beginning.... skates made of wood were first used by hunters about 200 A.D. Later in Finland, hunters used skates made from the leg bones of deer. Early bone runners were later replaced by iron and then steel..... 1880's There was a local roller polo league with teams from Houghton, Calumet, Marquette, Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Escanaba. Somewhat like hockey; a rubber ball was used, the sticks were small, almost like walking canes, and the action could be wild! The ball was put in play in the center of the rink and both teams rushed for it, "resulting in a high action game". Their roller skates were not the in-lines many use to play hockey today; they had four wheels per foot; two wheels by toes and two wheels by heels. Local "Casino" Roller Polo Team
