George Hainsworth's 1917 Toronto Kew Beach City Senior Champions Medal George Hainsworth played for the Kew Beach Toronto, City Senior team in 1917. His son, Bill tells me that this was probably in the Balmy Beach area which is (or was) a suburb of Toronto. This medal was presented to him for being champions of the City Senior league that year.
From 1917-1922 he played for the Kitchener Greenshirts of the OHA Sr. League and then played for the Saskatoon Crescents of the WCHL from 1923 until 1926. He then joined the Montreal Canadiens for the 1926-27 season.
This is most likely one of the earliest pieces of memorabilia avilable from the great Hainsworth's playing days. Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde Edouard 'Newsy" Lalonde is perhaps one of the most famous former members of the Renfrew Millionaires. Although only with the team for a short time, his name alone drew crowds and media attention. Nicknamed "Newsy" from his early youth spent working in a Cornwall newsprint factory, he began his professional hockey career with the Cornwall Rovers before moving to Toronto for two seasons. In 1910 he joined the Montreal Canadiens, which was part of the National Hockey Association, and a team also owned by M.J. and Ambrose O'Brien. After watching Lalonde score two goals in his first game as a centre for the Canadiens, Ambrose O'Brien decided the Renfrew Millionaires could benefit from this young star's talent. He sent Lalonde to join the Renfrew Millionaires for the remainder of the season, where he scored 38 goals bringing his total for the year to 40. In 1911, Lalonde returned to the Canadiens.

The Renfrew Millionaires were a professional hockey team, that for two seasons, 1910 - 1911 and 1911 - 1912, would attract national attention to the small timber town of Renfrew, Ontario. The creation of railroad contractor and town founder, M. J. O'Brien and his son Ambrose, the Renfrew Millionaires were originally called the Renfrew Creamery Kings, and were a small hockey team playing in the Upper Ottawa Valley League. Dreaming of having their hockey team win the Stanley Cup, the O'Brien's fought to have the team recognized by the Eastern Canadian Hockey Association, which would later become the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA).

French-Canadian Tradition
In 1898, the Irish built their own college (Loyola) and parted physical company with their French friends. The ties between the two would remain strong, however, and play a critical role in the French gaining entry to Montreal's game. Not only did the first French players in the senior league play for the Shamrocks (Belcourt and Ernest Pagnuelo in 1897, Theophile Viau and Louis Hertubise in 1902), but perhaps even more indicative of the Irish support - and how crucial it was - is the fact that the Shamrocks always voted in favor of having a French-Canadian team join the senior hockey ranks while the other teams did not accept the French until 1905. At about the same time that French-Canadian students first started to play the game, a new sporting club introduced a hockey team meant to be solely for francophone players, though a number of the players were actually Irish. This is where the difficult history of acceptance for French hockey teams begins. In 1894, a group of French-Canadian businessmen formed the Association Athletique d'Amateurs Nationale, known simply as le National . In the 1894-95 season

The following are condensed excerpts from Bob Duff's "The Odd and the Unusual" in the bestseller Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Andrews McMeel Publishing).
Los Angeles Kings forward Luc Robitaille was drilled into the net during a scramble in a Vancouver Canucks-Kings game. Instinctively, he quickly turned and drilled the first player he saw with a cross- check. Unfortunately, it was teammate Dave Taylor. As Taylor groggily rose to his feet, seeking revenge, Robitaille, in a state of panic, pointed to nearby Vancouver defenceman Doug Lidster. "It was him," Robitaille told Taylor, who immediately lunged at Lidster. Robitaille waited nearly two years before revealing what had really happened.
Giving the red light a workout was never a concern while Hardy Astrom was in goal for Don Cherry's Colorado Rockies in 1979-80. "First practice in Colorado, we were working on breakout drills. I shoot the puck at Hardy from the far blue line, and it goes right through his legs. 'Fluke,' I figure, so I shoot another one. Right through his legs again. 'Next drill,' I said. Actually, Hardy was a nice guy, he just had a weakness with pucks."
Overheard: Female Heckler to Ref: "If you were my husband, you gray-haired bum, I'd give you poison." Ref (Loudly): "Lady, if I was your husband, I'd take it."

The Patricks: Lester and Frank
Hockey's Royal Family 1833-1960, 1885-1960 Following Lester Patrick's death in 1960, sports columnist Jim Coleman wrote, “Lester Patrick didn't invent hockey but no other man has ever exerted such a lengthy and generally beneficial influence on any sport.” When Lester’s younger brother, Frank, died four weeks later, another columnist claimed, “The modern rule book is a monument to Frank's invention: it still contains 22 of the rules he wrote.” While other hockey historians credit Lester with some of the rule changes, most agree that Lester and Frank created modern hockey and founded a hockey dynasty neatly described in a chapter of Trent Frayne’s book, The Mad Men of Hockey. He wrote, “... for 15 years they organized and ran their own league, built and owned their own rinks, raided rival leagues and signed their own players, drew up their own schedules, made up their own rules, and owned, managed, coached and played on their own teams.” It was Frank who proposed the blue lines that divide the rink into three zones, the penalty shot, a penalty for checking into the boards, the assist for helping score a goal, the numbering of players, the forward pass, and the playoff system. Others give Lester credit for allowing defencemen to rush up the ice and goaltenders to stop a puck any way they can instead of being restricted to standing, and both are given credit for establishing the Pacific Coast Hockey Association that won the Stanley Cup for such teams as the Vancouver Millionaires, the Victoria Cougars, and the Seattle Metropolitans.

Charlie Gardiner would win the Vezina Trophy and lead all goaltenders that year with a 1.73 G.A.A. and 10 shutouts in 48 games. Gardiner would also backstop the Hawks to their first ever Stanley Cup win in 1934. Tragically though he would pass away two months later following a brain operation.
