VIENNA, Austria Martin Rucinsky set up Vaclav Prospal's first-period goal, and scored one of his own in the third as the Czech Republic denied Canada its third straight title and won the world championship 3-0 today. Tomas Vokoun, named the tournament's best goalie, made 29 saves in earning the shutout. The Czechs (8-1) hadn't won the gold since 2001 when they captured their third straight. It is their fifth world championship since 1996. It didn't come easy as the Czechs beat the United States in a shootout to win their quarterfinals game on Thursday, and then eliminated Sweden the runners-up the past two years yesterday to win that semifinal matchup 3-2 in overtime. Rucinsky gave the Czechs a 2-0 lead 3:14 into the third period, beating Canadian goalie Martin Brodeur with a slap shot to the glove side from the top of the left circle after a fast rush. Linemate Jaromir Jagr, a five-time NHL scoring champion, set up the goal.

THEO TO RETURN?
CANADIENS PLAYER NEWS Alexei Kovalev Kovalev has signed a four-year $18 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens, the team that acquired him at the trade deadline in 2004. Kovalev's stint in Montreal generated mixed reviews, but the NHL's new rules emphasize offensive skill, which Kovalev has in abundance; look for him to rebound with a very strong 2005-06 campaign. Saku Koivu Though he's set to become an unrestricted free agent, it stands to reason that Captain Koivu will return to Montreal for a 10th season. He's a good fit, and shouldn't burst the Habs' budget. Mike Ribeiro The speedy forward should be one of the Habs' brightest stars in the years to come, especially if the NHL actually means business with regard to its crackdown on obstruction. If he continues where he left off in 2003-2004, Ribeiro should emerge as a legitimate top-line scorer.

The Only Game in Town
T Whatever the case, the condition of Russian hockey could be worse. In Sweden a scandal has rocked the hockey world as three players allegedly took a completely drunk woman back to their hotel room and, well, in hockey terminology, scored one after another into an empty net. Meanwhile in Canada, the NHL lockout has Canadians wondering whether they still have a reason to live - and the answer of course is a resounding "no way, ay." Anyway, look for the start of the intriguing 2005 Russian hockey playoff season on March 18, broadcast on Sport and NTV+. All series are best-of-5. In the first round, the first seed plays the eighth seed, second plays the seventh and so on. To whet your appetite, below are team capsules for all the playoff teams. Kovalev, acquired at the 2004 trade deadline from the New York Rangers , decided to stay with the Canadiens after spurning other offers including one to return to Pittsburgh where he enjoyed his best seasons. Kovalev, one of the top forwards available on the unrestricted free agent market, had 10 points in 11 playoff games with Montreal in 2004.
