UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Playoffs a memorable time for Bossy Mike Bossy loved this time of the hockey season. Especially when his team was playing well. "Going into the playoffs, it was a great feeling when the team was playing its best," said the retired Hall of Famer who helped the New York Islanders win four straight Stanley Cups (1980-1983). "When the team was playing well, you always felt comfortable doing the things you did best." And what Mike Bossy did best was score goals. He had 573 goals in 752 NHL games for a goals-per-game average of .762 - second-best in league history behind only Mario Lemieux's .823. Perhaps even more remarkable is his 85 goals in 129 playoff games, an average of .658 per game, also second only to Lemieux (.787). And, Bossy's three-season playoff total of 51 goals from 1980-81 through 1982-193 is the most ever by an NHLer. Bossy, now 43 and living in his hometown of Montreal, takes pride in how often he scored at the most difficult time of the season. "It's tougher to score in the sense you're playing the same team night after night for between four and seven games," Bossy said. "Defensive systems get a little tighter, individual checking gets a little tighter."

Israeli hospital to help former Soviet hockey star By PAUL LUNGEN

Staff Reporter TORONTO - With the likes of poster boy Pavel Bure skating in the NHL, it's hard to believe there was a time back in the 1970s when Russian hockey players were considered an anonymous, "faceless" bunch.
Clad in their CCCP jerseys, wearing the same red helmets, they whirled through hockey lanes interchangeably with little regard for position. And like Kharlamov, Mikhailov and Petrov, their names all seemed to end in "ov."
Contrary to popular belief, those fabulous players were far from being hockey automatons, as jingoistic Canadian commentators at the time would have us believe.
Forward Viktor Zhluktov was among that first group of Soviet stars who wowed Canadian hockey enthusiasts with their skill and finesse. Playing on a line with Sergei Kapustin and Helmut Balderis, Zhluktov won Olympic gold in 1976, the Canada Cup in 1981 and World Championships in 1978, '79, '81, '82 and '83.
Today, at age 45, hockey injuries have caught up with swift skater. He suffers from a degenerative spinal condition that threatens to cripple him and confine him to a wheelchair.

It's official. Troy Visser claims the Rogue Puck (TM) . Check the Past beeHive Pool Winners Wall of Fame Here's some humble words from the winner: As I sit here contemplating what words of wisdom I should impart on those fellow poolsters who were not as triumphant as myself, I look to the past and gaze upon the speechs of those who used to be winners. Of course, their pitiful attempts to impart their limited knowledge aren't particularly useful any more. However, they inspire an appropriate mood of reflection in my time of jubilation and wild celebration. Indeed as I take a pause from the Vancouver-wide bachanalia that has spontaneously erupted since my recent achievement of THPS (Total Hockey Pool Supremacy), I look back upon my winning season. It was a season that was characterized by an amazing stretch-run in the final month which propelled me from 26th place (a position eventually clinched by a certain Steven Smith) to 1st overall. It was also a season that taught me the value of loyalty - tenaciously hanging on to the likes of Keith Tkachuk until I realized he really was a no-good bum and then dumping him faster than Wayne Gretzky can enter the Hockey Hall of Fame. Finally, as you can probably tell from this acceptance speech, it was a season that taught me something about modesty. Choosing a nickname like "Content with Mediocrity" was simply brilliant. It lulled all of you into a false sense of security while I waited patiently to strike.

It's official. Paul Fera claims the Rogue Puck (TM) . Check the Past beeHive Pool Winners Wall of Fame Here's some humble words from the winner: Ah, the honour, the glory, the elation. It is with a profound sense of awe and humility that I accept this year's Rogue Puck for the regular season hockey pool. Clearly my incredible foresight was exemplified in my stunning initial team selection that immediately catapulted me into the top five. >From that point on, it was simply a matter of time before I claimed the top spot with several strategic trades that demonstrated my profound understanding of the intricacies of managing a hockey pool team. I guess the only thing left to say is, IN YOUR FACE ROB (and the rest of you too)!!! Paul "who wants Yashin?" Fera, April, 2001

Yay...too bad we got the dimwitted hack as our Sutter. The last good coach the hawks had was Darryl, who has since excelled in SJ and Calgary.
Who was it again that claimed Alex Karpovtsev was a "world class" defenseman?

That doesnt make Brian a good coach. He was a solid and gritty player as were all the Sutters but he does not have the temperament to coach a young team. I think he is much more suited to teaching a team of veterans, he doesnt have the patience to let young players play through their mistakes and would be content icing a roster full of Nichols, McLeans, Shantz and Dubinsky types over a youngster with offensive upside.
