Goalie pads may be downsized
Web-posted Apr 8, 2005
By PAULA PASCHE Of The Daily Oakland Press ROMULUS - Smaller goaltender pads or larger nets? Advertisement In the spirit of not messing too much with the tradition-rich game of hockey, the NHL will likely downsize goalie equipment whenever the lockout ends. Looking to add more entertainment value, which translates into more scoring chances, the NHL's 30 general managers along with seven players, two referees and league and players association officials met on Thursday at the Westin at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. "We made some real good, solid headway with the goaltender's equipment. It's something that's affected hockey in every league in the world. If you look at the goals against - not just in the National Hockey League - but in European hockey, where it's supposed to be open and flowing hockey,'' said Colin Campbell, NHL executive vice president and director of hockey operations. Campbell met with 11 goaltenders on Wednesday to get their input. Two of them - Dallas' Marty Turco and New Jersey's Martin Brodeur - also participated in Thursday's meeting.

Investor Relations King Kaufman's Sports Daily The NBA's playoff formula means winning is a bad thing for some teams, and that's a bad thing. Plus: Drinking at 200 mph with F1. And: "Slap Shot" lives in the UHL. The NBA will be conducting a seminar on the law of unintended consequences over the next six weeks as several Eastern Conference teams battle for the sixth seed in the playoffs including teams currently seeded fourth and fifth. That's the unintended consequence of the offseason realignment into three divisions in each conference, which was undertaken because oh, shoot, there was a minute there last fall when I felt like I understood why the NBA realigned its divisions when nobody pays attention to divisions anyway, including, for the most part, the schedule maker.
