Getting Autographs by Mail
For those of us not lucky enough to live in an NHL city, getting autographs can indeed be a challenge. Writing to players and asking them to sign a card or two has become an effective means for obtaining hockey autographs. What follows is a listing of players that sign through the mail, things to keep in mind when writing to players, potential problems that may be encountered, and my personal insider tips to "assist" your hockey autograph success via the mail. Be sure to check out the following pages as well: Stadium Directory - Contains all NHL team addresses. Addresses - Contains all college, minor and junior hockey team addresses. Retired Players - Where to write to some former NHLers.

Player Habits
Click here for more player ratings Are players friendly or mean? Will he sign more than one item? Does he normally take a cab to the game? Most players have certain habits which they follow. Though no player acts the same every day, I thought it would be fun to compile my list of hockey player habits when it comes to signing autographs. These evaluations are based on my personal experience. I have been collecting hockey autographs for 7 years, and have been to 15 different NHL cities from Montreal to Anaheim. I will add more as time (and my memory) allow. My ratings are my own, and I will only change them as my personal experiences change. So please don't try to "lobby" for your favorite player if I have given him an unfavorable grade. Tremendously friendly and cordial signer - goes out of his way to sign.

Hockey with a musical flare will return in April with Juno Cup, featuring Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy facing off against former NHLer Doug Gilmour. In support of MusiCan, a music education program, the game will take place April 1 in Selkirk, Man., as part of Juno Award festivities. Helping Cuddy on the musicians' team will be country singer George Canyon, Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle, Billy Talent's Jon Gallant, singer Sarah Harmer and Default's Dallas Smith. Assisting Gilmour will be former pros such as Winnipeg Jets veterans Dave Babych, Jordy Douglas, Dale Hawerchuck, Kris King and Perry Miller. Last year's inaugural match, which included rocker Sam Roberts and Calgary Flames' Joel Otto, raised more than $200,000 (thanks in large part to a donation from sponsor MasterCard).

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Keith Tkachuk: Captain Coyote Phoenix Coyotes' left winger Keith Tkachuk was jokingly labeled the $6 million man for the substantial contract he signed last summer, but in real life he's no robotic man. He hurts like everyone else, and this 24-year-old Ukrainian native of Melrose, Mass., is still feeling the effects of being stripped of the Winnipeg Jets' captaincy before the start of the 1995-1996 season. Then Jets' coach Terry Simpson made the move after the team matched a five-year, $17.2 million offer sheet Tkachuk had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. "When the coach-GM (John Paddock) tells you (that) you will always be the captain, when he says that and does something else, well, that's brutal," Tkachuk said. "They basically lied to me and I can't respect that." Tkachuk's pride was soothed only somewhat when, for the Jets' last game in Winnipeg (Game 6 of the first round series against the Detroit Red Wings), he was the team's acting captain in place of injured left winger Kris King. "Yeah, it was awful nice they put the 'C' on me for the last game in the playoffs," Tkachuk added, "but I'll never forget what they did to me. It was wrong."

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Tkachuk stays, but "C" doesn't Keith Tkachuk hit the jackpot on Group 11 free agency, but was expecting a rocky ride from fans after the Winnipeg Jets matched the Chicago Blackhawks' offer of $17.2 million (U.S.) for five years. Tkachuk, who was stripped of his captaincy and replaced by utility forward Kris King, returned to Winnipeg on October 4, 1995, the day after the Jets matched the Hawks' pitch to keep him. "You can't come and play without a contract," Tkachuk said, explaining his absence from training camp. "Everybody knows that. I knew there was a possibility of a match. That's fine. I'm here playing, and I'm very happy. I never once said I didn't want to play here." Tkachuk agreed to the offer sheet of $6 million (U.S.) this season, all salary, no bonus - then $2.6 million, $2.8 million, $2.8 million and $3 million over the final four years. This season's payment will make him the third-highest-paid player in the NHL, behind only Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. The Jets will manage to afford the large salary, especially in the first year, through a couple of methods. They will receive approximately $2.1 million (Canadian) from the NHL through the currency relief program funded by NHL Enterprises and television revenues. It is designed to help Canadian-based teams when they match offers tendered by U.S.-based clubs.

PDA View Full Version : New Canadian Tradition mbangler Jan 7th, 2003, 05:57 PM Sounds like there may be a good matchup between the Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets next season. So who's to blame if the Sen's go down for the count? (ie: bankruptcy) Players, League, Owner's, Fans . . . or combinations of those people? Jan 7th, 2003, 06:23 PM Hello,
Don't blame me. I've never lived in the Ottawa area, but even I've been to a game. I purchased four tickets so me, my wife, and a couple of my in-laws were able to see a game.
The biggest problem that Canadian teams are facing now is the low Canadian dollar and the fact that not enough 'superstars' are willing to play in Canada for Canadian loonies. You'd think that our 'good ol' boys' would want to stay in Canada and play here, even if it meant sacrificing some of their income. Come on, how much money do these people really need?
James MACSPECTRUM Jan 7th, 2003, 06:57 PM
just about ALL hockey players both north and south of the 49th parallel are paid in U.S. dollars. Very, very few (if any) are paid in Cdn dollars - only those with really bad agents.
it's just that the tax situtation for millionaires is a little bit better in the U.S. and the endorsement deals (read: Lindros vs. Nordiques) are more plentiful.
