Hockey Action Is Back! scroll down to read the Press Release from Caras on the JUNO CUP As many of you may know, David has been a long time hockey fan.
(see skatingrink and hockeynight for David's further involvement with the game) Ever since he landed in Canada from Scotland in the sixties he and his father adopted the game, as well as the country, as their own. When David was 30 he joined the National Novice Hockey Association fronted by none other than Gordie Howe. The NNHA taught the game to those who had not had the opportunity to play hockey as kids and provided them with a league in which to play. When we moved to Quebec David joined a Sunday night league in Lennoxville with the guys he worked with in construction. For half of the eleven years that he played Sunday night hockey David could be found in goal. For the last 4 years David has been a full time musician, so he is happy to don skates and pads and face a few pucks to help raise money for the CARAS music education in schools program.

  • Summer's here, and that means Free Agent time is here. Rumours have been going around about Coffey coming to the Leafs from Carolina, and apparently, the rumours aren't that far fetched. In a CTV sportsnet interview, Coffey said he'd like to play for Toronto if the opportunity arose. Slam! sports is also reporting that along with Coffey could come Gary Roberts. Coffey had 11 goals and 29 assists in 69 games this past season, and says "I feel like I'm skating better now than I did when I was 25 years old." I, for one, would love to see Coffey come to Toronto. He could add that experience our defencive corps needs.
  • Here's a list of available free agents (thus far): Vladimir Malakhov Kevin Hatcher Sean Hill Dallas Drake Rob Brown Mike Eastwood Kevin Stevens (no drug jokes...please!) Valeri Zelepukin Stephane Richer German Titov Stephane Matteau Rick Tocchet

    Crowned and Flatlined
The ongoing NHL lockout has claimed two personnel jobs within the NHL, Kris King and Pat Flatley. King, who is the compliance officer for the league's new crackdown on the size of goaltender protective gear, did not receive a contract renewal due to the inactivity of the entire league. Pat Flatley, NHL Alumni Board of Director/NHL Director of Alumni Relations, will also be without a contract. It is expected that when the league resumes, the pair will return to their regular duties.
During their careers, King and Flatley were two ‘blue-collar’ types that didn’t rake in the big millions that their star peers did (Although King was well overpaid during the last part of his career).
Now that the lockout has cost them their jobs (temporarily), I wonder whose side they would be on this fight. The NHL has provided them with post-playing employment, and then taking it away from them. Both players wouldn’t have been hit too hard under a salary cap (except King’s last contract), so they may not sympathize with their former guild buddies.
