Paul Kariya will be wearing a Nashville Predators' jersey when the 2005-06 season begins in October. (CP File Photo) The Nashville Predators general manager David Poile made the biggest free-agent signing in franchise history on Friday, signing the forward to a two-year, $9-million US contact. "This is a day we've been waiting for for a long time for this franchise," Poile said. "He had a lot of places to go. The fact (is) he chose Nashville, and I think in some regards that's got to be somewhat of a stunner that he chose here instead of going to some other bigger market where he could get more fanfare."

Sports life a family affair
Noriko Kariya following brother's footsteps
FIVE years ago a hockey pipeline connecting North Vancouver to Orono, Maine, was turned on when Paul Kariya accepted an athletic scholarship at the University of Maine. Two years ago the next shipment arrived in the form of Paul's younger brother Steve, currently a sophomore on the Black Bear hockey team. And in August of this year, Noriko Kariya will become the latest stick-wielding Kariya to attend the elite Division 1 school the only difference being she plays on grass instead of ice. The 18-year-old Grade 12 Argyle secondary student and North Shore field hockey all-star accepted a scholarship to Maine last month. "They offered me a full scholarship so they have a lot to expect from me," Noriko says of her pending career at Maine. "I'm going to give the best I possibly can and show up in the best condition when I go to school. And play the best field hockey I've ever played." Those familiar with her brother Paul a bona fide NHL superstar as a member of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the only rookie to win the Hobey Baker award (presented to the top U.S. College hockey player) will recognize many of his humble, understated characteristics in his younger sister.

Hockey players-Biography-Juvenile literature. Hockey-Juvenile literature Grades 3 and up / Ages 8 and up. Review by Dave Jenkinson. excerpt:
Though he was a dynamic player and a natural-born leader, there were many who thought Bobby Clarke would never be able to play in the NHL. Bobby had been diagnosed with diabetes at 15 years old and needed daily insulin injections. Although the title, Tough Guys of Hockey, suggests that the book's contents might focus on the game's "enforcers," the "physical" players who engage in fights to protect their teams' star players or to motivate their teams to play better, Romanuk, a well-known TV sportscaster, has, in fact, profiled 16 individuals who had to overcome some type of obstacle in order to become and/or remain part of the National Hockey League. And despite the title, one of the "guys" is a "gal," goalie Manon Rheume. Organized alphabetically from Bob Baun to Peter Stasny, with Theoren Fleury as the cover player, the book's 15 pairs of glossy facing pages offer one page of text and a second in the form of a full-colour action photograph of the profiled person. The readable text offers the reason(s) why the person was included and includes direct quotes from the individual, teammates and/or coaches. Basic biographical/playing data is captured in a small box.

Mike Mottau
2000 Hobey Baker Award Winner
On April 7, 2000, Boston College captain Mike Mottau was named the winner of the annual Hobey Baker Award ahead of fellow BC finalists Jeff Farkas and Brian Gionta. Skating its third consecutive Hobey winner and sixth in 10 seasons, Hockey East earned the moniker "Home of the Hobey". David Emma of Boston College was the league's first Hobey Baker recipient in 1991. An outstanding rookie named Paul Kariya captured the award while leading his Maine team to a national title in 1993 after fellow Black Bear Scott Pellerin had collected the prestigious trophy in 1992.
After a four-year hiatus, Hockey East commenced its second string of winners when BU's Chris Drury was named college hockey's most dominant player in 1998. New Hampshire's Jason Krog added the trophy to his case in 1999 and Mottau completed Hockey East's second triumvirate of winners when he stepped up to the medal stand in April of 2000. Three-time finalist Gionta fell just short of making it four in a row for Hockey East when he finished runner-up to Michigan State's Ryan Miller last season.
The Hobey Baker Award is presented annually to the outstanding college hockey player in the U.S. It is to hockey what the Heisman Trophy is to football and the Wooden Award is to basketball. Sponsored by the Decathlon Athletic Club in Bloomington, Minnesota, the Hobey Baker Award was initiated in 1981. Each year, a list of nominees from college coaches around the country is narrowed down to the ten finalists, from which the winner is selected.

Blackhawks grab goalie Khabibulin
From news services
Nikolai Khabibulin has long been considered one of the world's elite goaltenders. If he is not the best, he is at least the highest-paid. Khabibulin, who led the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2004, agreed to a four-year, $27 million contract Friday with the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago has not won the Cup since 1961, the longest current drought in the NHL. "The $6.75 million makes him by far the highest-paid goaltender in the league," Jay Grossman, Khabibulin's agent, said during a telephone interview, referring to Khabibulin's new annual salary. "When we began this process, we targeted Nikolai Khabibulin and Adrian Aucoin as the two main players we wanted to sign," Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon told the Associated Press.

Third Kariya Commits To Maine
Compiled by USCHO Staff Daily News reported Tuesday. The 5-foot-7, 157-pound Kariya, currently with the Victoria Salsa of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, selected Maine over Harvard and Denver. ADVERTISEMENT
"I felt that I could develop the most at Maine," said Kariya, who is among the BCJHL's top scorers with 14 goals and 56 assists in 41 games. "I already knew Maine had a great coaching staff. And when I was down there for my visit, I felt their program was much better than most colleges." "Martin is very creative with the puck. He has great offensive talent," said Salsa head coach Campbell Blair, himself a former Maine defenseman. "He has good speed and sees the ice well, like all of the Kariyas. His limiting factors are his size and strength, but those will improve as the years go on. He's a very committed player." Kariya expressed caution about his ability to contribute early.
