The history of hockey is rich with great Canadian names — Jean Beliveau, Wayne Gretzky, Tim Horton, Bobby Hull, Frank Mahovlich, Bobby Orr — but there is only one who has earned the ultimate moniker: Mr. Hockey. The great No. 9, Gordie Howe is synonymous with style, showmanship, and stamina. Other players are blessed with specific skills. Howe had them all — remarkable skating and stick-handling ability, amazing strength and toughness, an ambidextrous slap shot that intimidated even the most stalwart goalies. Even today, he is recognized as one of the greatest all-around players of all time, the Babe Ruth of his sport.
Howe was born on March 31, 1928, the sixth of nine children, to Ab and Catherine Howe, in the tiny Saskatchewan town of Floral. Much of his humble childhood was spent skating on frozen ponds and sloughs in Saskatoon. Ultimately, he joined the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings as a rookie in 1946. With Hockey Hall of Famers Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay, Howe formed the famous Production Line. The Wings dominated the NHL in the 1950s with seven consecutive first-place finishes and four Stanley Cups.

Gordon (Gordie) Howe No list of great hockey players would be complete without the name of Gordon Howe, who spent 25 glorious seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Howe holds the record for the most goals (786), the most points in a career (1,809), and the most career assists (1,023). Howe was born in 1928 at Floral, Sask., and played his last amateur season with the Saskatoon Lions juveniles and then played one year of minor pro with Omaha of the U.S. League before joining Detroit in the 1946-1947 season. Gordie was known as one of the game's best all-around players, combining the arts of shooting, scoring, stickhandling, and all other hockey skills. He displayed an ability to shoot with equal dexterity from either side and had an effortless skating style. He was rough and tough, but never a bully. Howe may well be ranked the game's greatest player of all time. Bobby Orr, Boston's great defenseman, thinks so, and so does Bobby Hull, another Hall of Famer. Howe established many records. He played the most seasons (25), most regular-season games (1,687), won the most Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL's most valuable player (6), most Art Ross Trophies as league scoring champion (6), in addition to the most career goals, points, and assists. He was also named to the most NHL All-Star teams (21-12 times to the 1st team, 9 to the 2nd).

The next year he attended the Detroit Red Wings camp and the rest as they say is history. When the saying "Mr. Hockey" was coined, it didn't take an expert to deduce that there was only one player who qualified for that lofty status. Aldo Guidolin, an opponent of Howe back in the early days, understatedly remarked "Gordie plays a funny kind of game; he doesn't let anyone else touch the puck!" Hall of Famer Bill Gadsby claimed "He was not only the greatest hockey player I've ever seen, but also the greatest athlete." The right winger was a giant in his time at 6'1" and 205 lbs. He had the build of a heavyweight boxing champion. And he knew how to fight.
