    http://www.yaleherald.com/archive/xxvii/1999.02.26/sports/p25fts.html
From the Sidelines: Breaking the ice in coed hockey
By Karen Rosenberg The counselor at the Can-Am hockey camp lofted the puck toward me for the 100th time. "You can shoot harder at me," I shouted. I was the only girl on the ice, the only girl in the goalie training program, and the only girl in the entire summer camp at Lake Placid that weekbut I expected to be treated like the other goalies who were fending off slap shots. The counselor stopped shooting, skated over, and said, "It's not because you're a girl. It's because when I look at you, I see a small goalie, and I don't want to shoot too hard. But I'll give you some harder shots if you want." His next one dented my helmet. When my ears stopped ringing, I considered what he had said. His comments made me realize that the situation was more complex than I had supposed, and that perhaps I was too defensive about my unusual status as the only girl at a guys' camp in what is often considered a guys' sport. During the rest of that week, I was challenged and pushed to the limits of my ability as much as any boy in the program. Sure, there were a few exceptions, like former Philadelphia Flyers goalie Bob Froese, who focused more on my ponytail than my positioning, saying, "Corey Hirsch always told me, `I'd rather be dead than red in the head,' but you're the prettiest goalie I've seen." But he was part of the old guard, from the days before players wore helmets, before Cammi Granato and Manon Rheaume. The newer players seemed to be able to adjust to a female presence; on the ice, I was treated just like one of the guys.

Hirsch unhappy : because Martin Gerber (former water fowl, now a 'Cane) took his spot on the Langnau Tigers of the Swiss A League. "....every time an NHL player signs in Europe, another life is affected. One of these lives affected is my own," he continued. "I came to Europe two years ago to get away from the NHL. Once again, though, the NHL has me in its grasp. It's like a chokehold I can't get out of....." Hirsch will be performing on a milk crate in front of Port Authority if his benching continues past January.
posted by garfield to Hockey at 10:13 AM CST (15 comments total) I'm think "the lack of compassion and understanding" of what Hirsch is doing to the paranoid sidewalk preachers of the Big Apple "is extremely unnerving."
posted by garfield at 10:15 AM CST on November 1 I think the guy makes a fair point. He left the NHL deliberately, and now is benched because some big shot has come over and stolen his job for who knows how long.
Surely signing for another league would be in violation of any contracts the NHL players have?

Hirsch was playing for the SCL Tigers of the Swiss "A" League but has been sidelined in favour of Martin Gerber of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hirsch agreed to write a column for Sun Media and used it to air his greivances with the influx of NHL players to Europe.
"I think some of these players should have a talk with my pregnant wife and my kids that moved their lives to Europe, only to watch me sit in the stands game after game because I have been bumped by an NHL player," Hirsch wrote in the Sun.
Faced with the possibility of not playing again this season, Hirsch talked about the long-term legacy NHL players will leave behind when the lockout ends and their short-term stay is over.
"They will have their careers making great salaries but the damage they will have left in their wake will be irreparable," surmised Hirsch, who has represented Canada in international play. "They are scabs over here, replacement players, basically rented to put fans in the seats."
Hirsch also finds it ironic that NHL players are heading to Europe as they fight for job security in North America.
