All or Nothing
Corey Hirsch speaks bitterly about losing a job in Europe to an NHL player in this morning's Calgary Sun. This follows a similar diatribe from Lonnie Bohonos a week or so ago. I don't think the story is particularly important in the context of the labour dispute because what happens to Corey Hirsch or Lonnie Bohonos is simply not a factor to either the NHL or NHLPA. I do think their stories are important in another context. The important question the stories raise in my mind: Why is either Corey Hirsch or Lonnie Bohonos still playing hockey? One of the saddest parts of professional sports are the stories of the players who nearly make it in occupations that are essentially all or nothing. The relative few who succeed become rich and famous. The many who nearly succeed would have been far better off had they not tried to make it. Both Hirsch and Bohonos have spent their entire lives honing their athletic skill and pursuing an NHL dream. So far they have probably made more in career earnings than the typical 32 year old worker. Unfortunately most players in their position also have no education, little real world job experience, and few prospects for the next 35 years. If they turn out to be typical, what they've gained so far will be more than given back throughout the rest of their working lives. They will be starting out in the real world and they will have a lot of difficulty catching up to peers in that real world. The average 32 year old is seeing a career and earnings beginning to take off after a decade of education and experience.

The New York Rangers drafted Hirsch in the eighth round (169th overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. The netminder dominated the AHL in his first professional season, going 35-4-5 with a 2.78 goals-against average in 1992-93. Hirsch earned his first NHL call-up that season and went 1-2-1 in four games. In 1994, Hirsch backstopped Team Canada to a sliver medal at the Olympic Games. He spent two more years in the Rangers' system before being dealt to the Vancouver Canucks for Nathan Lafayette in 1995. Hirsch saw his first significant amount of NHL playing time with Vancouver in 1995-96, when he went 17-14-6 with a 2.93 GAA in 41 games. The netminder later moved through the Nashville Predators' and Anaheim Might Ducks' systems before resurfacing with the Washington Capitals in 2001-02. Eventually the tie was resolved after a spectacular goal by Peter Forsberg (later depicted on a Swedish stamp, to the dismay of goaltender Corey Hirsch ), followed by a just as spectacular save by Tommy Salo . This was the first time Sweden won an Olympic ice hockey tournament. In the bronze medal game, Team Finland defeated Team Russia by a staggering 4-0. Another notable fact about the tournament is that it was the breakthrough of Team Slovakia (winning one of the groups and losing to Russia on overtime in the quarter finals) as a hockey nation.

      Philippians 4:11-12 - For I have learned to be content in whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. I was recently reading a local sports columnist. He tells the sad story of Corey Hirsch. Corey lost out on a goalie job with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. He was demoted to a minor league team, and told to report to Syracuse, New York, in the American Hockey League. He wouldn't go. He was holding out for a job in the major leagues. He wouldn't play for $11,000 a game. That's $100,000 a month. Every one of us wants to earn as much as we can. I don't know anyone who would turn down a raise. Yet, when the subject of what big-league athletes make comes up, I see a lot of head-scratching. "Out of touch" and "Overpaid cry-babies" are what I hear in the cafeteria. For $11,000 a game, you can even shoot rock hard hockey pucks at me. Maybe it's a principle with him that he can play in the National Hockey League, but for that kind of money, I'd play anywhere. You just might be able to sum this up in one little word: greed.

    Hockey - Beauty, Eh?
    A largely unnoticed, but interesting phenomena of the sport of hockey is the significant number of feminine spectators and fans. I'm sure this phenomena is partially due to the nature of the sport. The Hockey rink seems to be the last place left where men can compete in honest, masculine brutality, while the ladies watch in breathless admiration at the raw display of testosterone. I also believe ladies love the sport because hockey has some of the best-looking athletes. There has been some controversy over this page because it appears that professional athletes are being treated like mere objects of beauty, but hopefully the players are not offended but flattered. Note#1: I have to warn you, I have a bias for my favorite team:
