PRINT PAGE EMAIL ARTICLE ) Font ( ) Font Ghost of the Miracle on Ice: U.S. Squad Upsets the Soviets By Sandra Bailey International Herald Tribune Friday, August 16, 1991 Up the mountain in Courchevel, they are trying out the ski jumps, hurtling headlong down a porcelain-lined slide and flying out into the still, warm air. And here, at the foot of the women's Olympic downhill run, the full force of the hot afternoon sun could do nothing to burn away the ghosts that accompanied the opening of the Olympic hockey arena. The U.S. hockey team overcame a 4-1 deficit to upset the Soviet Union, 5-4, on Thursday in the first game ever played in the arena. It was only something called Le Premier Palet d'Or, or First Golden Puck, a dry-run tournament for the XVI Winter Olympics that will open here Feb. 8. And the Soviet team only has six or seven players likely to make the cut for the Olympics. But don't tell that to Bret Hedican, a 20-year-old from St. Cloud State in Minnesota, who scored the winning goal and could not stop smiling afterward.

Skater Yamaguchi Gets Hitched In Hawaii
A happy Bret Hedican and bride Kristi Yamaguchi toasted their guests at their wedding reception in Hawaii. Photo by Gerrye Wong. By Gerrye Wong Everyone who has ever traveled to Hawaii falls in with this beautiful state. At his wedding reception, Bret Hedican admitted that he fell in love in Hawaii with his bride, Kristi Yamaguchi, during a vacation he spent with her family a few years ago. He vowed then to himself that he wanted to be married in Hawaii, and so began the romantic scene for their beautiful wedding at the Orchid at Mauna Lani in the Big Island of Hawaii this month. Yamaguchi, 28, met Hedican, 29, during the Albertville Olympics. Yamaguchi was attended by her sister Lori Costas, who was matron of honor, and bridesmaids Mimi English, Jennifer Sabovcik, Alison Uyehara, Kelly Eichstad and ice dancer Isabelle Brasseur.

Back To School
I just got back from the first session of "Hurricanes University" tonight, and it was a blast. We started off with a tour of the locker rooms, courtesy of Canes equipment manager Wally Tatomir. It was obvious that he puts a great deal of effort into his job, and there are lots of subtle nuances in the realm of equipment that make a big difference on the ice. An interesting thing was to find out that guys like Ron Francis go through about 20 pairs of skates in a season, while some other guys will "only" go through 3-4. Holly and Hayley got to participate in this part of the program, as they toured the locker facilities with the rest of us. That was nice of the Canes to let the guests tag along.
Hayley and Holly pose in front of the locker of one of Holly's favorite players After that, it was on with the skates and helmet, grab a stick, and hit the ice. Cruising around the ice to warm up, I talked with Tripp Tracy for a minute. He said "I did a doubletake when I saw your sweater," as I was wearing the jersey of the now-defunct Richmond Renegades, a team that Tripp played goalie for in the late 90s. We chatted for a few minutes about the Richmond-Hampton Roads rivalries.
Wade warms up by skating around the RBC rink Canes coaches Kevin McCarthy and Randy Ladoceur gave some instruction on skating, stopping, passing, and shooting for about 45 minutes. The skating was pretty much review from the lessons I'd taken a year or so ago, but the stickhandling was brand new. It was pretty awkward managing both skating and controlling the puck at the same time, and I didn't really get comfortable with it at all during the hour I was on the ice. I'm guessing that sort of thing takes some getting used to.

Kristi Yamaguchi: Graceful Gold
This lovely figure skater pursued her childhood dream and went on to win Olympic gold. She is a poised and compassionate role model. Yamaguchi's talent grew out of a seeming disability. Born with clubbed feet and forced to wear casts during her early childhood, Yamaguchi was encouraged to begin an exercise regimen to strengthen her legs. Her mother enrolled her in dance classes. But after watching Dorothy Hamill skate in the 1976 Winter Olympics, the four-year-old Yamaguchi decided she wanted to be just like Hamill and dedicated herself to skating. "I learned to do homework in the car, get changed in the car, eat breakfast and lunch in the car," she recalls. The highlight of Yamaguchi's career came during the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. Heeding the advice of teammate Scott Hamilton, Yamaguchi adopted a relaxed, happy attitude toward the Games. As a result, her skating throughout the events was airy, joyous and triumphant, and she won the gold. Yamaguchi also won the heart of hockey player Bret Hedican, whom she married in Hawaii on July 8, 2000. The graceful figure skater tours with Stars on Ice and runs the Always Dream Foundation, an organization that helps underprivileged children. She plans to retire from skating in 2003.
