EX-ADMIRAL WHEELER MOVES TO CHARLOTTE
Shawn Wheeler will play hockey frequently at Scope this season, though not for the Hampton Roads Admirals. Wheeler, who played for Hampton Roads last season, will be a player-coach for Charlotte this season. And the Checkers, expected to be the Admirals' top competitor in the Eastern Division race, come to Norfolk six times. Columbus had previously announced Wheeler would be a player-coach for the Chill. However, he left there after 11 days because of a contract dispute. Wheeler was one the most unpopular visitors to Scope in his days as a Greensboro Monarch. Last season, after putting on a Admirals' jersey, he was a fan favorite. One of a handful of blacks playing professional hockey, Wheeler scored 74 points in 47 games for Hampton Roads. He worked briefly with the Admirals' front office this past summer. ``Shawn wants to become a coach,'' Admirals president Blake Cullen said. ``He wanted to be a player-coach here.'' But ECHL rules prohibit a team from having both an assistant coach and a player-coach. Al MacIsaac is the Admirals' assistant coach.

Wolverines, Spartans to Battle It Out
By Bill Greer
Staff Writer Michigan Wolverines The Wolverines, who lost only twice in their final 15 regular season games, ran into trouble against Nebraska-Omaha in the playoffs and then failed to get by Maine in the NCAA Tournament last season. During the summer, leading scorer Mike Comrie departed for the Western Hockey League. Michigan, however, remains the coaches' choice to win the CCHA. On offense, the Maize and Blue have great balance starting with seniors Mike Kosick, Josh Langfeld and Scott Matzka, (each tallied 30 or more points last season). Complimenting the trio of seniors are sophomores Andy Hilbert and Mike Cammalleri, who both put up double-digit totals in goals and assists last year. Senior Geoff Koch and sophomores Mark Mink and Jed Ortmeyer will also be counted on to contribute offensively for UM. The Michigan blueliners are led by one of the nation's best defensemen in junior Jeff Jillson. The Hobey Baker candidate has it all a 6'3", 220 lb. frame that creates a punishing presence on the ice, as well as the ability to contribute offensively (26 assists in 1999-2000). Newcomers Mike Komisarek and Andy Burnes are sure to see some time as well.

Hockey Broncos clinch CCHA playoff berth
Feb. 28, 2000 KALAMAZOO For the first time in three years, Western Michigan University's hockey year will extend beyond the regular season as the Broncos have clinched a berth into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament (10 out of 12 teams qualify). "I'm obviously pleased that we have made the CCHA Tournament," said Coach Jim Culhane. "That has been a goal of ours since the first day of practice. It's a big step in the growth of our program." With its playoff opponent still unknown, WMU will focus on Ferris State this week (March 3-4) as the regular season comes to a close. The Broncos travel to Big Rapids, Mich., on Friday before hosting the Ferris Bulldogs Saturday on Seniors' Night. Saturday is also KOHA Appreciation Night. Youth players wearing their team jerseys will receive free admission. WMU is 11-18-3 overall and 9-14-3 in the CCHA (10th place). The Broncos have an opportunity to move up in the conference standings in the final weekend. They trail both Bowling Green and Miami (tied for 8th place) by two points. However, WMU would likely need to sweep the series with Ferris (19-13-2, 12-12-2 CCHA) to overtake Bowling Green or Miami. Ferris and WMU split a two-match series earlier this season. Western Michigan dealt a 7-3 blow to Ferris on Dec. 3 in Kalamazoo before the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 victory in Big Rapids. WMU leads the all-time series, 49-29-6, posting a 20-16-3 mark on the road and a 26-12-3 ledger at Lawson.

The Rams (13-8-1) were swept from the West A tournament with an 8-1 loss to top-ranked Cheverus in a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday evening at the Portland Ice Arena. The teams battled evenly for the first nine minutes of the game before the Stags found the range for three goals in the next four minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Before the period ended, Kennebunk’s Kyle Baker made a nice steal and then blasted a shot into the Cheverus net to cut into the Stags’ lead at 3-1. Cheverus added two goals in the middle period and three more in the third as they advance to Friday’s West A semifinal round.
