Hall of Fame Celebrates the NHL's Go-Go Days of the 1980s
It is a startling reminder of how much the NHL game has changed. Tonight, goaltender Grant Fuhr enters the Hockey Hall of Fame, the latest inductee from the great Edmonton Oilers' dynasty of the 1980s . Those who saw him play know that Fuhr's selection is beyond dispute. But he goes into the Hall with career statistics that would leave him unemployed in today's NHL. Fuhr personifies the goaltending of his era. The '80s were the highest scoring decade in NHL history, with teams routinely combining for seven or eight goals per game. The goalie's job was to keep his hell-bent teammates at least one step ahead of the other guys. The Oilers' inaugural NHL season was 1979-80, when they were one of nine teams to score over 300 goals. Last season's highest scoring team was Detroit, with 269 goals. Edmonton's first Stanley Cup came in 1984, when they pounded opponents with 94 goals in 19 playoff games. By comparison, the New Jersey Devils scored 63 times in 24 games to win the 2003 Cup.

Oiler great Fuhr headed to hockey hall of fame
Published: Thursday, June 12, 2003 The Associated Press
TORONTO - Goaltender Grant Fuhr entered the Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday, capping a career in which he played for five Stanley Cup winners with Edmonton.
Fuhr, the first black in the hockey hall, was joined Wednesday by forward Pat LaFontaine, Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch and junior team coach Brian Kilrea.
Fuhr helped the Oilers to championships in 1984, '85, '87 and '88 and was a backup on the 1990 Stanley Cup winner.
He helped Canada win the Canada Cup tournament in 1987 and was a first team all-star and Vezina Trophy winner in 1988.
"It's a fabulous honor," said Fuhr. "It's the topping on which was the most enjoyable of things to do for a living. This is the ice cream on the cake." Glen Sather, who coached Fuhr in Edmonton, called him one of the best goalies of the '80s.

Hey Grant. Congratulations on your induction! My question is who do you think are some up and coming goalies in today's game. Marc-Andre Fleury obviously, but who else? Grant Fuhr
Besides Fleury, I'd say Robert Luongo in Florida and probably Marty Turco in Dallas and I think Jamie McLennan is a good goalie in Calgary. I also think Kari Lehtonen, who's not yet in the NHL, is going to be a star with Atlanta.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Mid season marvels It is the National Hockey League's age of experience. The results of some informal 1995-1996 mid-season award polls and all-star balloting confirm the old tricks of old dogs continue to amaze. Pick any position and you'll find that the best players this year have been spinning and weaving their magic at a higher level than their peers for a long, long time. Thirty-five-year-old New York Rangers' center Mark Messier, in his 16th season, finished second in voting for the Hart Trophy (MVP) at mid-season. Florida Panthers' goalie John Vanbiesbrouk, 32, is the mid-season winner of the Vezina as the league's top goalie. On defense, Chris Chelios of the Chicago Blackhawks and Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins occupy their usual positions as blueline powerhouses. The winner of the mid-season Selke Award for best defensive forward is Pittsburgh Penguins' 32-year-old center Ron Francis, who also stood third in over-all league scoring. None of these results are really surprising. But the Penguins' Mario Lemieux and St. Louis Blues' Grant Fuhr are two more thriving thirtysomethings who only one year ago were dismissed as overtaken by the talent-sucking duo of poor health and Father Time. Both have come back with seasons that truly rank among their best.
