A great goaltender of our time
Grant Fuhr was one of the few black hockey players to have played in the NHL . He made his living as the last line of defense on one of hockey's great offensive powerhouses, the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s. Teamed with the likes of Wayne Gretzky Mark Messier , Jarri Kurri, Paul Coffey , Kevin Lowe and coach Glen Sather; he won five Stanley Cups with Edmonton Oilers. Fuhr was elected into the prestigious Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 along with Red Wings Fuhr was born on September 28, 1962 in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada. He played his minor hockey with the Victoria Cougars of the WHL. He was selected in the first round of the 1981 draft, 8th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. He became the regular goalender in Edmonton by 1983 and had eight excellent years full of ups and down. With the five Stanley Cup wins also came the personal problems with drug/substance abuse. Grant Fuhr made a comeback of sorts with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1991 when Cliff Fletcher brought him over to bring some stability in goal to the then stuggling Maple Leafs. Fuhr had success with the Leafs and played with several other teams during the 1990s, including the

He joined Victoria of the World Hockey League in 1979, when he was only seventeen, and was named the league's top goaltender in both his seasons there before going to the NHL's Edmonton Oilers in 1981. Injuries limited his playing time in his first couple of seasons with Edmonton, but he emerged as a star on the Wayne Gretzky-led championship teams of 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Fuhr won the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender for the 1987-88 season, when he set a record by playing 75 games. Fuhr has been one of those clutch goaltenders who are at their best in the playoffs. After a 3.91 goals-against average in 1983-84, he gave up just 2.99 goals a game in the playoffs, compiling an 11-4 record. In the 1988 playoffs, he established records for most games by a goalie, 19, and most victories, 16. His career took a dive because of injuries in 1989 and he was suspended for six months in 1990 for admitting cocaine use. Edmonton traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1991 and Toronto sent him to the Buffalo Sabres during the 1992-93 season.

History
The Hockey Hall of Fame was established by the National Hockey League in 1943, but it didn't have a permanent home until 1961, when it opened in a new building on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. In 1990, the hall moved into 50,000 square feet of space in the Bank of Montreal building in Toronto, near its original location. Players and officials must be retired for three years before they become eligible. The "Builders" category includes coaches, as well as team managers, owners, and others who have contributed to the sport. Top of page

Stanley Cup championships between 1984 and 1990. Without a doubt, his best year was in 1987. Fuhr was a workhorse, accumulating a league-leading 4,304 minutes played and 40 wins. He earned his sole Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender and was runner-up to teammate Wayne Gretzky for the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. During the 1983-1984 season, Fuhr collected 14 points, which still stands as the single-season record for most points by a goaltender. Wayne Gretzky and Grant celebrate one of their many Stanley Cup championships.

Fuhr, LaFontaine, Ilitch to be inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame
TORONTO ap. Grant Fuhr made his living as the last line of defense on one of hockey's great offensive powerhouses. He did it so well that he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The goaltender became the third player from the Edmonton Oilers' dominating teams of the 1980s to make the Hall. He won five Stanley Cups with Edmonton while the Oilers were playing a wide-open style. "It's a fabulous honor," said Fuhr. "It's the topping on which was the most enjoyable of things to do for a living. This is the ice cream on the cake."
