By Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff, 8/10/2003
Chris Ferraro knows the ache in his heart isn't going to subside. Less than a year ago, his wife Jennifer lost an excruciating battle with stomach cancer, and the husband she left behind struggles to focus on some of life's simplest daily tasks.
''When she died, I died, too, there's no doubt about that,'' Ferraro said late last week. ''It's just my feelings for anything . . . it seems like I have none. But, hey, am I going to show my wife I'm a quitter from here? No way. I'm not going to do that.''
With that resolve and spirit, Chris and his twin brother Peter on Thursday will hold the first annual Jennifer Ferraro Fund golf tournament at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. A bunch of NHLers current and past, including the likes of Michael Peca and Pat LaFontaine, will be on hand to help the Ferraros build the resources to help others fight the types of cancer that overcame Jennifer at age 32.
''She had such an amazing way about her,'' said Ferraro, who met his future wife when they were students at the University of Maine. ''It was the way she touched everyone she met, how she made everyone feel that they were the most important person in the world.''
