THE JENNIFER FERRARO FOUNDATION TO BENEFIT STOMACH CANCER
Join the Albany River Rats in the fight against stomach cancer by making a donation to the Jennifer Ferraro Foundation. Former River Rats Center Chris Ferraro, his twin brother Peter along with a coalition of friends and families have begun a foundation in the memory of his late wife, who passed away after a battle with stomach cancer.
“After seeing what my wife had to battle, it is certainly not a pleasant situation and if we can save one life or comfort many others throughout their battle, then her passing will not have been in vain,” said Ferraro. “We are trying to grow this foundation so that her name will live on. The will and desire that she possessed to try to live and beat it was so impressive and while she may no longer be here physically, we are going to keep her name alive.”
Jennifer Ferraro died on Nov. 5, 2002, in Long Island, N.Y., after a year-long battle with gastric cancer. She was diagnosed during the fall of 2001, just weeks after she and Chris married.

FERRARO TWINS: DEDICATED ON AND OFF ICE
By Doug Manners
Springfield, Mass.
- Chris and Peter Ferraro have literally been pretty much inseparable since birth. The twin brothers were born one minute apart on January 24, 1973, and they have remained close both on and off the ice ever since. The two first began playing hockey at the age of six on Long Island, New York, where they were born and raised. As kids, they always played on the same team, a trend that would continue until several years into their professional careers. "We definitely have a great feel for each other out on the ice," Peter said. "There are times when I can throw the puck in an area and I already know he is there. It definitely works to our advantage to play together on the same line." After splitting one season between Dubuque and Waterloo of the United States Hockey League, a Tier I junior league, both players embarked on a collegiate career at the University of Maine. In their freshman year, the Black Bears posted a 41-1-2 record and the Ferraro brothers, teamed up with players such as Paul Kariya and Garth Snow, won the 1993 NCAA Championship. Chris and Peter played only four college games the following season before leaving to play for the United States National Team. Later that year, Peter went on to play for the U.S. Olympic squad. Chris just missed joining his brother on the Olympic team as he and Ian Moran were the final two players to be cut from the squad. After that, the Ferraros opted to make the jump to professional hockey rather than returning to the University of Maine.

Guard sets major junior
shutout mark
February 3, 2004
Kelowna Rockets goaltender Kelly Guard set a WHL and Canadian Hockey League record on Jan. 28 when he recorded his 11th shutout of the season as the Rockets blanked the visiting Spokane Chiefs 1-0. Guard eclipsed the mark set by Chris Worthy of the 1967-68 Flin Flon Bombers. "We are very thrilled for Kelly," said Rockets GM Bruce Hamilton. "Our organization is proud of him as well as the fact both Kelly Guard and the Kelowna Rockets become a part of the record books." Guard, an over-ager, has made 49 appearances this season for Kelowna, posting a record of 34-11-4 with a 1.58 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. He leads the league in wins, shutouts, goals-against average and save percentage.

Trent Whitfield added two goals and Andreas Salomonsson had three assists for Portland, which completed a two-game sweep of the Phantoms this season. The Pirates improved to 2-1-2 on their eight-game road trip and won in Philadelphia for the first time in five tries.
Ben Stafford
and Patrick Sharp each scored and Antero Niittymaki finished with 21 saves for Philadelphia, which was coming off back-to-back wins in Rochester and Cincinnati last weekend.
After losing 1-0 to Ouellet in Portland on New Year’s Eve, the Phantoms finally put a shot past him 2:44 into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. With the Pirates on the power play, Mike Lephart came up with a loose puck at his own blue line and fed Stafford at center ice for a breakaway.
