Since being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the third round (52nd overall) at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Fernandez has developed into an NHL starting goaltender. The Nordiques traded the netminder's rights to the Dallas Stars in 1994, before Fernandez began his professional career. He started one game for Dallas in 1996-97 and notched his first NHL win Nov. 27, 1997, against the Phoenix Coyotes, making 31 saves. The Stars traded Fernandez to the Minnesota Wild for Entry Draft picks in 2000. With the expansion Wild, Fernandez came into his own, posting a 2.24 goals-against average in 2000-01, the lowest ever for an expansion team's goalie. Fernandez went 19-17-4 for the Wild that year.
