Ference Working Overtime

CALGARY, Alberta -
Flames defenseman Andrew Ference played his junior hockey in the rough-and-tumble Western Hockey League, so it should come as no surprise that he fares just fine any time the gloves come off. Nevertheless, teammate and well-known tough guy Chris Simon was a little surprised to see just how well Ference handled things when he became embroiled in a dust-up with the Lightning's Cory Stillman in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals. ``He threw 'em pretty well there,'' Simon said of Ference. ``I was impressed. I didn't know he was that good a fighter.'' The Flames have learned a lot about Ference during these playoffs. In particular, they have learned that in addition to being able to handle himself in a fight, Ference also can handle playing a regular role on their blue line. Ference wasn't being asked to do that when the playoffs started. He was playing only about 16 minutes a game. But when regulars Toni Lydman and Denis Gauthier went down with injuries after three and six games, respectively, Ference's ice time improved.

Andrew Ference Interview
Thanks to Elizabeth(Elizabeth1017@yahoo.com) for the interview
  • NAME: Andrew James Stewart Ference
  • CURRENT OFF-SEASON RESIDENCE: "I split between Whistler, British Columbia and Sherwood Park, and Alberta."
  • FAMILY: "My mom is a doctor, my dad is a dentist, and I have one 22-year-old sister who just finished her schooling to become a science teacher back in Edmonton. They all live in Alberta."
  • MARITAL STATUS: "I'm single, but I have a steady girlfriend back home in Canada. She is actually competing in the X-Games on ESPN. She is a snowboarder for Team Canada."
  • HOW ACQUIRED: Pittsburgh's 8th Round Selection (208th Overall) in the 1998 Entry Draft
  • W-B/S PENGUINS UNIFORM NO.: 5
  • BEST THING ABOUT BEING A W-B/S PENGUIN: "Being with this group of guys. I came down from the NHL, and obviously I want to get back there. But right now in terms of the guys, it's a lot more fun to be around teammates who are more your age. Everyone here is upbeat. We have a lot of fun. That's what it's all about. This is a really great group of guys I have for teammates."
  • FAVORITE NHL TEAM WHILE GROWING UP: "I was a hometown boy growing up in Edmonton when the Oilers were so good, but I always had the Penguins' jersey as a kid, always Pittsburgh, an it was a Mario Lemieux jersey. So when I was drafted by them later on, I was pretty pumped up."

National Junior Team adds 3 CHL Players
    December 15th, 1998
    Canadian Hockey League Notebook
Canada's National Junior Team added three more players from the Canadian Hockey League on Friday to bring the list of CHL players receiving invitations to 31. A total of 34 players were invited to the selection camp. Added to the roster on Friday were Eric Chouinard of the Quebec Remparts, Jason Ward of the Windsor Spitfires and the Regina Pats' Kyle Calder. Earlier, last week Andrew Ference of the Portland Winter Hawks and Robyn Regehr of the Kamloops Blazers were added to the training camp roster. Halifax Mooseheads forward Alex Tanguay was dropped on Friday for medical reasons. Tanguay, a member of the 1998 Team and Colorado's 1st pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, suffered a concussion on October 18 and has not played since.

Todd Bertuzzi was villified in the media across the world in 2004, but many Canucks fans still supported him. The upward progression of the club over the past five seasons had created the highest demand for Canucks regular season tickets ever. After selling out their final 31 home games and all eight home playoff games in 2002-03, season ticket subscriptions reached the 17,000 level this summer and a waiting list was created for the first time in franchise history.
18,630 jammed into GM Place on October 11 to see the Canucks beat Calgary 4-1. Rookie RW Jason King scored his first NHL goal in the third period, drawing assists from the Sedins in what would be the Canucks most productive line over the first couple of months of the season. Two nights later, G Johan Hedberg blanked Edmonton, 3-0, making him the second goaltender after Mike Fountain in 1996-97 to record a shutout in his Canucks debut. The Canucks lost their next two games and then went 7-0-2 in their next nine. This was despite the fact that the top line of Naslund, Morrison, and Bertuzzi was producing well below expectations. King, however, scored 11 goals in his first 19 games and was the talk of the town. But it was mostly team defence that was rescuing the club. Blamed for their failure in previous playoff experiences, improvement in that area was noted.
