COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey today announced that 39 players, representing 21 different National Hockey League teams, have been invited to the 2005 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Orientation Camp, to be held Sept. 5-8 in Colorado Springs, Colo. "The orientation camp will be a terrific opportunity for our staff to come together with the candidates for our Olympic Team to assess the potential make-up of our squad," said Don Waddell (Duluth, Ga.), general manager of the 2006 Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team in making the announcement. "It will not be a tryout camp as the evaluation process will continue throughout the first part of the NHL season, however, it will be an important first step in the total process." The camp is designed to assist in the preparation of the 2006 United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the XX Olympic Winter Games to be held Feb. 10-26 in Torino, Italy, and will consist of both on- and off-ice components.

2000 Hobey Baker Award Winner
On April 7, 2000, Boston College captain Mike Mottau was named the winner of the annual Hobey Baker Award ahead of fellow BC finalists Jeff Farkas and Brian Gionta. Skating its third consecutive Hobey winner and sixth in 10 seasons, Hockey East earned the moniker "Home of the Hobey". David Emma of Boston College was the league's first Hobey Baker recipient in 1991. An outstanding rookie named Paul Kariya captured the award while leading his Maine team to a national title in 1993 after fellow Black Bear Scott Pellerin had collected the prestigious trophy in 1992.
After a four-year hiatus, Hockey East commenced its second string of winners when BU's Chris Drury was named college hockey's most dominant player in 1998. New Hampshire's Jason Krog added the trophy to his case in 1999 and Mottau completed Hockey East's second triumvirate of winners when he stepped up to the medal stand in April of 2000. Three-time finalist Gionta fell just short of making it four in a row for Hockey East when he finished runner-up to Michigan State's Ryan Miller last season.
The Hobey Baker Award is presented annually to the outstanding college hockey player in the U.S. It is to hockey what the Heisman Trophy is to football and the Wooden Award is to basketball. Sponsored by the Decathlon Athletic Club in Bloomington, Minnesota, the Hobey Baker Award was initiated in 1981. Each year, a list of nominees from college coaches around the country is narrowed down to the ten finalists, from which the winner is selected.

USA Hockey officials are bringing back 13 players from the team that won the World Cup of Hockey crown back in 1996. U.S. vets return for repeat performance
As numerous Stanley Cup champions have learned over the years, trying to repeat is one tough assignment. So, imagine the Herculean task awaiting Team USA as it sets about to defend the World Cup of Hockey crown won back in 1996. To accomplish that task, USA Hockey officials are bringing back 13 players from the 1996 squad that played exceptionally well. Coach Ron Wilson of the San Jose Sharks also is back to reprise his successful role from the inaugural World Cup. Coming back are forwards Brett Hull, Doug Weight, Keith Tkachuk, Tony Amonte, Mike Modano, Bryan Smolinski, Bill Guerin, Steve Konowalchuk and Brian Rolston. Returning defensemen are Brian Leetch, Derian Hatcher, Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider. The veterans of 1996 will be augmented by a score of fresh faces, especially in goal, where Robert Esche of the Philadelphia Flyers, Ty Conklin of the Edmonton Oilers and Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders will form a new trio of goalies, taking over for the retired Mike Richter, Guy Hebert and Jim Carey. New to Team USA's World Cup defense corps is Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Ken Klee, Aaron Miller of the Los Angeles Kings, Jordan Leopold of the Calgary Flames and Brian Rafalski of the New Jersey Devils.

May 20, 2004 Former Wildcat Ty Conklin named to Team USA for 2004 World Cup of Hockey COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Hockey today named 26 players, including 14 members of the silver-medal winning 2002 U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, and 13 returners from the 1996 squad that raised the World Cup of Hockey trophy, to the United States roster that will compete at the World Cup of Hockey 2004. The U.S. is the defending champion of the World Cup of Hockey, having defeated Canada, 5-2, in the third game of a best-of-three final series in 1996, which was the last time the event took place. The World Cup of Hockey 2004 will be held August 30-September 14 across North America and Europe. "Our goal was to assemble the ideal team for a seven-game playoff series in which every game is a seventh game," said Pleau. "We examined a number of factors including experience, youth, energy, speed and versatility, while considering an overall team chemistry that allows us to gel as we move through the tournament. We are very pleased with those we have selected to represent the United States, and excited about the challenge of defending the championship in the World Cup of Hockey." Fifteen forwards were selected to the roster, nine of whom competed in the World Cup of Hockey 1996: Tony Amonte (Hingham, Mass./Philadelphia Flyers), Bill Guerin (Wilbraham, Mass./Dallas Stars), Brett Hull (Belleville, Ont./Detroit Red Wings), Steve Konowalchuk (Salt Lake City, Utah/Colorado Avalanche), Mike Modano (Livonia, Mich./Dallas Stars), Brian Rolston (Flint, Mich./Boston Bruins), Bryan Smolinski (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Senators), Keith Tkachuk (Melrose, Mass./St. Louis Blues), and Doug Weight (Warren, Mich./St. Louis Blues). The remaining six forwards named are: Jason Blake (Moorhead, Minn./New York Islanders), Craig Conroy (Potsdam, N.Y./Calgary Flames), Chris Drury (Trumbull, Conn./Buffalo Sabres), Jeff Halpern (Potomac, Md./Washington Capitals), Jamie Langenbrunner (Cloquet, Minn./New Jersey Devils), and Jeremy Roenick (Boston, Mass./Philadelphia Flyers).

Sportsrant Community National Hockey League NHL Rants View Full Version : Chris Drury Here is a good summary of his impact.
On the night of Oct. 20, the Buffalo Sabres sat slumped in the visiting locker room at General Motors Place in Vancouver. They'd just been thrashed by the hometown Canucks, 6-1. As they sat there, slowly removing their hockey gear, they wondered if this season would be any different than their last two campaigns, when the club finished last in the Northeast Division and out of the playoffs.
Buffalo goalie Martin Biron is 3-1-1 with a 1.58 GAA in his last five starts.
"That night we felt as low as we could be," said veteran defenseman James Patrick.
The Sabres had good reason to feel down in the dumps. The club was just 2-4 in its first six games, getting outscored 21-8 in that span.
"In those early games, we didn't have any chemistry on our lines," says coach Lindy Ruff, now in his seventh season behind the Buffalo bench. "We got down a couple of goals and we didn't deal with adversity very well."
Then, with three tough road games ahead and another dreary season staring them in the face, the Sabres suddenly picked themselves off the ice. They scored impressive road wins over the Kings, Ducks and Avs, outscoring them 13-4. After a home-ice loss to the Wild, the Sabres bounced back with a 5-3 win over the Leafs and a 1-1 tie with the powerful Senators.
