From 1995 to 1996 he held the position of Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel for the San Jose Sharks. Grillo supervised the club's scouting department and player development program and was responsible for their draft selections. He was the Sharks primary source of information regarding player trades and acquisitions. Grillo was promoted to executive vice president on March 23, 1995. He previously held a vice president title, along with some duties of the office of general manager, since June 26, 1992. Grillo, a native of Hibbing, Minn., served as director of pro scouting from 1988-90 with the Minnesota North Stars, preceded by eight years as a scout for the New York Rangers. It's very fitting that the quarter pole mark of the 2003-04 National Hockey League season has fallen a couple of days after the Flames thrilling back to back games against the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks. Both games featured things that don't usually come to mind when the topic of the Calgary Flames came up – high-octane offence and devil-may-care defensive coverage. A mere week ago I'd be discussing the fact that the team has allowed the fewest average shots per game in the league, a testament to their commitment to defence, their only real route to the playoff promised land. I'd also point out that the team has all kinds of trouble scoring goals, especially when their best-paid player continues to fire blanks. At times like these it's important to be mindful of the sample size. Two games come to exactly 9.5% of the first quarter of the season and should be treated as such. The Flames will only go as far as their defensive systems will take them, don't let that offensive barrage fool you.

The Canucks started off the game slow, and seemed to not find their legs, except for Dan Cloutier who was again, absolutely brilliant in goal for the first half of the game. Dan made a key 2 on 1 save off of Matt Lombardi, which could arguably be his best save of the year. He kept the game scoreless until the top line struck to open the scoring with Brendan Morrison tallying one of his hat trick goals. Then on the PowerPlay Markus Naslund threaded the needle by finding Mo on the back door play with a beautiful pass, for Morrison's second consecutive goal. A defensive breakdown allowed the Flames to climb back into this game, as Shean Donovan beat Dan Cloutier with a nifty move and backhanded it into a gaping net to close the Flames within a goal. Although 12 seconds later, the rookie, Ryan Kesler netted his first career NHL goal, with a quick snap shot that caught the far post and beat Jamie McLennan. From there on the Canucks seemed to lay back, and the Flames really took it to them, outplaying, outworking, and outchancing the Canucks, as they rattled Dan Cloutier as well by continuously running him, and getting him off his game. Their strategy worked, as Dan didn't look very good on the next 2 goals by the Flames, and before the Canucks could have anything to say about it, the game was once again deadlocked at 3.
